ABOHAR
Servant arrested:
The city police has arrested Harbhajan of Nai Abadi here for allegedly murdering Om Parkash Setia and his wife Parkash Devi, on the intervening night of August 28 and 29. The couple had employed as servant the alleged killer a fortnight ago. The DSP, Mr Gurmit Singh Randhawa, said at a press conference here on Friday that two accomplices of the servant had been identified as Amarjit and Krishan Kumar.

LUDHIANA
Dedicated:
The laboratory building of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities has been dedicated to Dr Avtar Singh Kahlon. The ceremony was held at the PAU campus here on Thursday. Dr G.S. Kalkat, Vice-Chancellor, said the university should continue to honour its stalwarts. Dr Avtar Singh Kahlon, founder Dean of the college, PAU, is an outstanding economist of the country and is well known for his contributions in the development of PAU and the growth of agriculture in the country, Dr Kalkat added.

PAU board members: The Punjab Government has appointed Mr Gurmit Singh and Ms Kiranjot Kaur as members of the board of management of Punjab Agricultural University for three years.

Elected: Dr B.S. Shah, Reader, Department of Pathology, DMC, was elected the vice-president of the Society of Andrology at the general body meeting of the National Congress of Andrology and Reproductive Medicines.

Patwari held: A team of Vigilance Bureau officials has arrested a patwari, Mr Karamjit Singh, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from Bakhshish Singh for making inteqal (farad jamabandi) of his property.

Scholarship: Dr Shingara Singh Sandhu, Director of Centre for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, Claflin College, Orangeburg, South Carolina (USA), has donated Rs 7 lakh to the Alumni Association of the College of Agriculture, PAU, for instituting the scholarship for outstanding students of the college.

Employees’ union:
The President of the local Municipal Subordinate Employees Union, Mr Jagdish Bali in a memorandum issued here on Friday has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to regularise the services of employees working on contract or part-time basis and of those who have completed 240 days in service to maintain a separate provident fund accounts of the employees.

PATIALA
Recruitment of teachers:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, at a sangat darshan programme held at Palian Kalan on Friday in Nabha sub-division said a four-member committee would be constituted at the village level to recruit teachers for the government primary schools. The DC said while the sarpanch of the village would be the chairman of the committee, a teacher of the school would function as the secretary and it would have a representative each from women and ex-serviceman.

PHAGWARA
National seminar:
A two-day national seminar on "Nari Asmita ka Sangharsh: Sahitya, Samaj Aur Rajniti ke Sandharbh Mein" began here on Friday at the local Kamla Nehru College for Women.

ROPAR
Teachers appointed:
About 110 teachers will be appointed in the government primary schools of this district by the end of January, 2000. This was stated by Mr Gurinder Singh Grewal, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a "sangat darshan" programme of Mianpur Changar village, 25 km from here, on Friday.

Bisham Pittamah: The Kanthala Oustees Rehabilitation Welfare Committee has decided to confer a special title of “Bhisham Pittamah” upon Mr Angrez Singh ‘Badheri’ in recognition of his continued efforts to fight for the rights of the original domiciles of Chandigarh. He was presented a siropa at the last convention of the committee held at Gurdwara Kanthala Sahib last week.

Demand: The Sector 25 Kumhar Colony Shopkeepers Sewa Samiti has urged the Chandigarh Administration that the rehabilitation of residents of Kumhar Colony at new sites in the same sector should not be without provision for the rehabilitation of shopkeepers who have been working in the colony for the past several years.

Function: The City Museum of Chandigarh organised a function on Friday to the completion of two years of existence. Mr M.N. Sharma, the first Indian chief architect of the city, who was the chief guest, conducted a guided tour for some school students.

Celebrations: The annual function of Dev Samaj and the 149th birth anniversary celebrations of its founder will be held at Dev Samaj Head Office, Sector 36, from Tuesday.top

AMBALA
Sugar mill:
About 200 employees of the Naraingarh Sugar Mill burnt an effigy of the management at Jagadhri Gate here on Friday. Later, they took out a rally and raised slogans against the management. A spokesman of the employees union said their agitation would continue till the workers were given back their jobs.

SIRSA
Marriage party:
Three persons involved in the murder of Kala Singh of Mohan village have been arrested. According to the police press note issued here on Friday, Karnail Singh, Kala Singh and Puran Singh had beaten Kala Singh as he had refused to serve liquor at a marriage party on December 10 at Panihari village. Three accused have been arrested under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC.

Six arrested: The police has arrested six persons involved in different cases. According to the police press note issued here on Friday, a bus driver, Major Singh, was arrested for rash driving. The bus he was plying had collided with a jeep near Jeewan Nagar on December 13. Ashok and Sanjeev were arrested under the Arms Act. A pistol and four cartridges were recovered from them. Prem Kumar was arrested under the Gambling Act.

SONEPAT
Water supply:
Residents of Kalan and Mashad Mohallas, Ram Bazar and other areas of the city remained without water on Friday and Saturday. However, no reason has been given by the officials of the Public Health Department in this regard.
