ISLAMABAD, Dec 24 (PTI) — Pakistan’s military leadership has allegedly refused to return the impounded passport of detained former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife, spoiling her plans to go to Mecca for pilgrimage with some other members of her family. Ms Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of the former Premier, was scheduled to leave for Saudi Arabia for performing ‘Umra’ (visit to Mecca outside Haj period) along with her daughter and a male member of the family.

Heavy fighting in Lanka
COLOMBO, Dec 24 (UNI) — At least 101 Tamil Tiger rebels and government soldiers have been killed in renewed fighting in northern Sri Lanka, the Defence Ministry here said today. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels were resisting a military push in the Vettilaikerni area where heavy fighting was raging, officials said, adding that both sides were firing artillery and mortar bombs at each other.

Bhattarai offers to quit
KATHMANDU, Dec 24 (AP) — Nepali Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai today offered to step down after lawmakers from his Nepali Congress party rebelled against him and signed a petition seeking his removal. “An understanding has been reached between Prime Minister and party President Girija Prasad Koirala that there will be a change in the leadership soon,” party spokesman Narhari Acharya told reporters after a meeting of the party’s central working committee.
