Protest: A local girls college has
earned the wrath of social organisations by
scheduling its annual fete on Valentine's Day.
The Students Rights Association protested over
forcing female students of the college to sell
entry and lucky draw tickets.AMRITSAR
Grant given: The BJP MP, Mr Daya
Singh Sodhi, on Monday gave a grant of Rs 5 lakh
for the development of the local DAV College. He
was speaking at the annual sports function of the
college. He assured 50 per cent central aid for
the construction of a sports stadium here.
Blood
donation camp: The local Red Cross
Society and the Punjab Girls Battalion organised
a blood donation camp at Government Girls Senior
Secondary School here on Monday. More than 32
girl cadets donated blood.
GURDASPUR
Salaries not paid: Employees of
more than 50 panchayat samitis in the state,
including panchayat samiti of Dinanagar,
Gurdaspur and Dera Baba Nanak blocks, and
employees of the local zila parishad have not
been paid their salaries since September. A
spokesman of the employees said the contributory
provident fund in the CPF account had not been
deposited though it had been deducted from the
salaries of the employees.
Buried
alive: Rattan Chand of Saraspur was
buried alive under a mound of earth while digging
a well at Passanawal village, under Dhariwal
development block, on Monday.
Suicide:
Raj Kumari of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh who was
living with his brother-in-law at Tibri Cantt,
near here, allegedly committed suicide by
consuming poison. The cause of the suicide is not
known.
Arrested:
The police on Tuesday arrested Sohan Lal and Tara
Chand, both residents of Jandial village under
Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir, and seized
95 kg of paddy from them which was being smuggled
to Punjab in a truck. They were intercepted by
the police at a naka near the Pathankot
subdivision. A case under Section 7, Essential
Commodities Act, has been registered.
HOSHIARPUR
Offender arrested: The police
here has arrested a proclaimed offender, Jasvir
Singh of Shotian, Sarhali, on Sunday, after seven
years. Mr R.P Mittal, SSP, told mediapersons here
on Monday that Jasvir was wanted in a case filed
under Sections 307 and 34, IPC, and Sections
25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

Contact programme: The local DAV
College organised a motivational-cum-personal
contact programme for competitive examinations on
Monday. Mr Subhash Kumar, Principal of the
college, presided. Lt Col. Manmohan Singh, Deputy
Director, Sainik Welfare Board, Jalandhar,
addressed the gathering.
LUDHIANA
Forum held: A national medical forum on
diabetes management was held at Dumra auditorium
of Dayanand Medical College here on Sunday. More
than 150 private practitioners of the district
attended the forum.
Convention:
An annual convention of the Indian
Society for the Study of Animal Reproduction
(ISSAR) and a national symposium on
"Biotechniques in Optimising Fertility in
Farm Animals" will be held at Punjab
Agricultural University from February 10 to 12.
The Deputy Director, General (Animal Science),
ICAR, Dr M.L Madan, will be the chief guest. Dr
G.S Kalkat, Vice-chancellor, will preside.
Quiz
contest: The Rotary Club, Ludhiana
Central, on Monday organised an inter-district
quiz contest to commemorate the tercentenary
celebrations of the Khalsa at Guru Nanak Public
School. teams from Amritsar, Jalandhar,
Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana participated.
Guru Nanak Public School, Ludhiana, won the quiz.
Powerloom
units: Activists of the local Textile
Joint Action Committee staged a dharna on Monday
in protest against a notification by the central
government barring small powerloom units from
manufacturing shawls and blankets from synthetic
yarn. A spokesman of the committee said the
government's notification had exempted synthetic
sarees and dhotis from its purview. A deputation
of the committee would meet the Union Government
on Tuesday.
MALERKOTLA
Mushaira: An Indo-Pak mushaira and an
international seminar on urdu will soon be
organised by the local Government College. This
was stated by Dr Bhagat Singh Vedi at the annual
literary function organised by Bazm-e-Adab on the
college campus on Saturday.
MOGA
Congress rally: A rally will be
organised by the Congress here on February 15 to
protest against the unprecedented rise in prices
of essential commodities, atrocities on women,
corruption in almost all government departments.
This was stated by Mr Maheshinder Singh,
President, District Congress Committee, here on
Tuesday.
Urged:
The General Secretary, PPCC and former President
of the Indian Medical Association, Punjab, Dr
Malti Thapar, here on Tuesday urged the state
government to accept demands of the doctors of
the PGI, Chandigarh, so that hundreds of patients
undergoing treatment there should not suffer.
Run over:
Two persons were killed on the spot and three
others injured seriously in an accident involving
a truck and a bicycle. The cyclist was killed
when he was run over by a truck near Rajeana
village on the Moga-Kotkapura road on Monday.
Another cyclist was killed when he was run over
by a bus, 2 km from here, on the Moga-Ferozepore
road. Cases have been registered.
NAWANSHAHR
Houses for SCs: The SAD-BJP
government will spend Rs 44 crore for providing
houses to SCs, who have no homes, during the
current financial year. It would give grants of
Rs 25,000 each to the eligible persons for
constructing houses. this was stated by Mr Sarwan
Singh Phillaur, Welfare Minister, while
addressing a gathering at Jhingeron village on
Sunday.
PATIALA
Cultural function: The Academy
of Sikh Religion and Culture adjudged Bhai Amrik
Singh Zakhmi as "outstanding devotional
singer" at a function held recently in the
academy. A college-level "shabad gayan"
competition was also organised which the local
Khalsa College won.

Sohrab Group of Companies, Malerkotla, organised
a free eye check-up camp here recently. About 650
patients were examined and 42 cataract operations

PHILLAUR
Murder: Gurdial Singh, alias Sethi,
allegedly murdered his own sister-in-law, Surjit
Kaur, wife of his brother, Mohan Singh, at Raman
village in the subdivision on Sunday. A dispute
over some financial matter was stated to be the
cause of the crime. A case under Section 302,
IPC, has been registered.
