New Principal:
Ms J. Kackria has been appointed new Principal of the BBK DAV College for Women here in place of its founder-Principal of the institution, Ms S. Ahlawat. She has been appointed Director, Project Planning and Inservice Training, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi.

RSS sammelan:
Shrikrishan Matlag, preacher of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) of the East zone addressed a large gathering of RSS volunteers at Balvidya Niketan Sainik School, Somadh Road, here on Monday. The programme was presided over by the Principal, Mr B K Bhatia, of the local S L Bawa DAV College.

Computer education:
A vocational computer training project being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Parkersburg (USA) and the local Rotary Club was inaugurated at Arya Kanya Vidyalya here on Sunday. The project involving a cost of Rs 1.65 lakh would provide computer education to girl students of the school.

Additional charge:
Dr Sukhdev Singh Sidhu, Principal, local Government Medical College, has been given the additional charge of Director-cum-Principal of Medical College, Jalandhar, an official press note said here on Sunday.

Camp: About 398 patients were examined at at special health check-up and free medicine distribution-cum-awarness camp organised by the Dedicated Brothers group and Daffodils Public School here on Sunday.

Festival: Sufi singers, Wadali brothers, Puran Chand and Pyara Ram, enthralled the audience with their rendition of sufi poetry at the Mohindra Festival, 1999, organised by the Youth Club of the local Government Mohindra College and the North Zone Cultural Centre.

Meeting:
A special meeting of the executive committee of the district presidents and secretaries of the Private Colleges Non-Teaching Employees Union will be held at Arya College, Ludhiana, on Friday to prepare the future course of action.

PHILLAUR
Murdered:
Mahinder Singh was allegedly murdered by certain assailants with sharpedged weapons at the local Mathurapuri Mohalla on Saturday. Mr Sarabjit Rai, SHO said the police had rounded up some persons in this connection. Personal enmity was stated to be the cause of murder. A case under Section 302, of the IPC, has been registered.

Cycle workers' union: The following have been elected as office-bearers of the Footpath Cycle Workers Union: President — Mr R S Gaur; Vice-President — Mr Madan Singh; General Secretary — Mr Satyavir Singh and Joint Secretary — Mr Ramesh Chand.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Chandigarh Club Employees Union: President — Mr Parshottam Dutt; Vice-President — Mr Babu Ram; Secretary — Mr Mohan Singh; and Joint Secretary — Mr Chander Parkash.

Celebrations: The Punjab Backward Classes and Minorities Front will take out Bhai Mohkam Memorial march from Dwarkapuri (Gujarat) to Anandpur Sahib in march-April this year to coincide with tercentenary celebrations of Khalsa. The Front, according to its President, Mr Ishar Singh Lang, also decided to set up Bhai Mohkam Singh Tercentenary Memorial Committee and urged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to restore the picture of Bhai Mohkam Singh at the Sikh Museum at the Golden Temple complex.

Blood donation camp: The Chandigarh Blood Donors Council, Agriculture Department, Punjab, and the Lions Club, Kansal, organised a blood donation camp here on Monday, during which 103 persons donated blood here today.

Theft: Mr Rajesh Rattan, a resident of Sector 35, has reported to the police that a colour TV, some ornaments and Rs 12,000 in cash have been stolen from his house when he was out of station.

Case registered: A case has been registered against unidentified persons for allegedly beating up the watchman of SGGS College, Sector 26, on the night of February 18.top

SYL canal:
Mr Kirti Prasad Jain, member of the state executive committee of the BJP and Chairman of the Industry Cell of the party, said here on Sunday that the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, should pay attention to the completion of the SYL canal. He said a delegation of BJP leaders of the state would meet the PM soon and impress upon him the need to resolve the deadlock over the issue as it was causing loss crores of rupees every year.

Protest rally:
A demonstration will be held on Friday at the Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh, on a call of the Indian Yuva Aggarwal sammelan to protest against the alleged stoppage of grant by the Haryana Government to the Agroha Medical College.

Arrest culprits: Agitation for the arrest of the culprits who assaulted Mr K.C. Sardana, Junior Engineer, Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam here, has gained momentum as the Sangharsh Samiti formed to get the assailants arrested will hold a meeting on Sunday to ponder over next course of action.

Noise pollution:
Resentment prevails among examinees, school teachers and parents of the students who are appearing for the middle examination over the increase in noise pollution in the city. They sought a ban on the use of loud speakers.

Property dispute:
Mr Baldev Singh of Mandi Dabwali and his wife, Hament Kaur, were allegedly injured by his brother, Sukhdev Singh, and his daughters, Raju (18) and Dempy (16), here on Saturday. A property dispute was stated to be the cause of the incident. The accused have reportedly absconded.

Injured: Karnail Singh (50) and Rajinder Singh (22) received injuries in a scuffle at the local Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar here on Sunday. According to informed sources, Karnail Singh allegedly snatched a gold chain from Rajinder when the latter refused to return Rs 50 to him, which led to the scuffle. After receiving the information, the son of Karnail Singh along with his maternal uncle, Bhalla Singh, attacked Rajinder with sharp edged weapons. Both accused have absconded.

Seriously injured: Mannu (5), daughter of Sheeshpal, a farmer of Panniwala Mota village in the district, was seriously near the village on Monday. According to informed sources, she was playing on the road side when she was hit by a Tata Sumo. The driver has reportedly absconded.

Misbehaviour: Babu Ram (40) and his son, Nintu(20), allegedly misbehaved with a 22-year-old pregnant woman of Lakkhi Tabaab mohalla on Saturday when the lady was going to a nearby shop for buying something. The two got hold of her and started tearing her clothes, but ran away when she started screaming.

SONEPAT
Bandh call:
The Gohana unit of the Haryana Beopar Mandal called upon the shopkeepers and traders to observe a complete bandh on Thursday to protest against the failure of the police to apprehend the culprits involved in the snatching of some money from Mr Anand, a resident of Khanpur Kurd village. Members of the Beopar Mandal will gherao the Chief Minister, who is visiting Gohana on the same day.

Decision hailed:
Ms Meena Chaudhary, President of the Meham Chaubisi Jan Sangathan and an Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader, has hailed the decision of the INLD chief, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, regarding the withdrawal of support to the Vajpayee government as the Union Government had allegedly failed to protect the interest of the farming community. In a statement issued here on Sunday she charged the Central Government with hiking the prices of the essential commodities.

She urged them to become members of the Red Cross Society. She was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a district-level Red Cross fair here on Saturday.

Redressal forum:
The Kangra District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum at a camp held here on Saturday directed the Irrigation cum Public Health Department, Indora, to restore the drinking water connection of Mr Des Raj of Ghagnan village. A compensation of Rs 1000 should also be given to him for the harassment and inconvenience caused to him and Rs 300 as court proceedings.

PALAMPUR
Workshop concludes:
A two-day training-cum-workshop on fodder, forge and pasture management organised by the Directorate of Extension and Education of HPKV concluded here on Sunday. Over 20 field functionaries from the Animal Husbandry and Agriculture departments were given training at the workshop in the agronomic practices and nutritional aspects of fodder crops and trees.
