ABOHAR
Elected:
Mr Harbans Singh Chahil, Mr Ved Prakash Rustagi and Mr Radhey Shyam Sharma have been elected President, Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, of the Teachers Club.

Three killed: Three local residents, including Jagannath Chugh, were killed when a truck hit the Canter parked on the Abohar-Muktsar road on Tuesday. The victims were repairing the Canter. The cremation was done on Wednesday after the post-mortem examination.

DERA BASSI
Blood donation camp:
To celebrate the tercentenary of the birth of the Khalsa, the local unit of Bharat Vikas Parishad, in collaboration with Oriental Bank of Commerce, will organise a blood donation camp at the Civil Hospital here on Friday. The Punjab Finance Minister, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, will be the chief guest.

GURDASPUR
Rally:
Teachers of government- aided private schools from all over the district participated in a rally here on Wednesday. They blocked traffic at the Post Office crossing and held demonstration in front of the residence of the local MLA, Mr Kartar Singh Pahra.

Four arrested: The police arrested Bishan Dass, his two sons, Kishore Kumar and Gurdial Chand, residents of Tajpur, and Karnail Singh of Belian Kullion village on Wednesday for allegedly dealing in the sale and purchase of cement meant for government works. A case under Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act was registered against them. The main suspect Brahm Dutt is still at large.

JALANDHAR
Language Committee
: At a meeting of the Town Official Language Implementation Committee, held here on Wednesday, Mrs S.K. Aulakh, the local Income Tax Commissioner, and President of the Committee, said that it had played an important role in implementing the official language, Hindi, in the Central government offices here.

KAPURTHALA
Bar Association :
Mr N.S. Noor, President of the District Bar Association, has nominated the following office-bearers of the association : Secretary — Mr Sanjay Gupta; Senior Vice- Presidents - Mr Harwinder Singh Walia, Mr Sunil Chabra and Mr Kanwaljit Singh Walia; Junior Vice-Presidents - Mr Sanjeev Mago and Mr Sushil Kapoor; Joint Secretary and Treasurer- Mr Sat Pal Wadhawan.

Gang busted: The police claims to have busted an inter-district gang of thieves with the arrest of four members and found stolen goods from their possession. The gang leader, Sukha of Sheikhupur village, is still at large, Mr Iqbal Singh, SSP, said here on Wednesday.

MALERKOTLA
Resentment:
The shifting of principals of government schools to other schools as the centre controllers during annual examinations of Class X and XII beginning from March 4 and 9, respectively, has been resented by principals. In a press note issued here on Thursday, Mr Joginder Singh Aulakh , President of the gazetted School Officers Association, Punjab, said the decision of the Punjab School Education Board in this regard would prove harmful as the presence of principals in their respective schools had been essential during March to look after other class examinations.

NANGAL
Missing teenager:
Ashutosh, a 15-year-old boy, from Kanchera village adjoining Nangal, left his house on July 8, 1998, to meet his maternal grand-parents at Dulcher village. He also took away Rs 3000 from his house without the knowledge of his parents. He, however, never reached the place of his maternal grand-parents. The police efforts to trace Ashutosh have not succeeded so far. But the parents have not given up hope.

NAWANSHAHR
Two suicides:
Ankush (22), a resident of Banga, and Prabhleen Kaur (19), a local resident,committed suicide on Tuesday by consuming poison here in a room of Shine Star hotel which they reportedly booked on Monday.

PATIALA
Demonstration:
Members of the district unit of Bharatiya Khadya Nigam Karamchari Sangh held demonstration here on Wednesday in protest against the non-implementing their demands by the management. Their demands include stoppage of direct recruitment at officer level and filling of 10,000 vacant post of class III and IV.

ROPAR
Telephone adalat:
A telephone adalat of Ropar, district was held under the chairmanship of Mr J.S. Sahota, District Manager Telecom, Ropar, on Tuesday. As many as 15 cases were settled in the adalat.

Hailed: Mr P.C. Puri, President of Chandigarh District Congress (1) Committee (Urban) on Thursday hailed the appointment of Ms Kiran Bedi as Inspector-General of Police of Chandigarh. In a statement on Thursday, he said after she takes over, the crime rate would come down. The local unit of Rashtriya Janata Dal also hailed the appointment and hoped that the poor and the general public, can now hope to get justice.

Demanded: The local unit of Lok Shakti on Thursday urged the Chandigarh Administration to model its new excise policy on the lines of Delhi so as to discontinue the practice of auctioning liquor vends. Liquor should be sold through Super Bazar and CITCO outlets, it said.

Road blocked: Residents of Sector 32 blocked a road in the sector for more than half an hour on Thursday to protest against the inability of the Chandigarh Police in recovering a minor girl, who was kidnapped from here a couple of months ago. The girl, Reshma, aged about 14 years, had allegedly kidnapped by Roshan, a youth of the same locality.

Dharna: Students of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, continued their dharna for the third consecutive day on Thursday. The students are demanding the arrest of Rajan Jindal and Vikas Gupta, students of Punjab Engineering College (PEC), who had allegedly beaten up a couple of GMCH students on the night of February 19. A spokesperson of the students said they would intensify their agitation to press for the arrest of these PEC students.

STOX Fellowship: The Society of Toxicology (STOX) India, an affiliate of the International Union of Toxicology, has conferred the Fellowship of the society on Dr Satish Kumar Garg, Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandary, C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Mathura, with effect from December 22, 1998. As Fellow of the society, he is entitled to use the designatory letters “FST”.

Appeal:
The Beopar Mandal of Panchkula in a press release has said that the ongoing strike by the District Bar Association had been causing a lot of inconvenience to the traders and the general public. Mr Mukesh Malhotra, Vice-President of the Beopar Mandal, has urged the administration to intervene.

Protest March: Akhil Bhartiya Yuva Aggarwal Sammelan is organising a protest march against the decision of the State Government to stop grant to Agroha Medical College. The march will start from Aggarsain Bhawan in Sector 30 in Chandigarh and culminate at Haryana Raj Bhavan.

FATEHABAD
Announced:
The Haryana Minister of State for Sports, Mr Ram Swaroop Rama, has announced that the State Government would soon construct a stadium here. He was speaking at a function organised by the local Saint Soldiers School on the occasion of their annual sports meet on Wednesday. Earlier, Mrs Jarnail Kaur, widow of former Haryana Animal Husbandary Minister , Harminder Singh, inaugurated the meet.

Case registered: The police booked two persons on Thursday on a charge of fraud. According to the SP, Mr Rajbir Deswal, Mrs Mukhtiar Kaur, a resident of Rattia, had lodged a complaint that Jasbir Singh and Niranjan Singh, residents of Rattia, had allegedly transferred her plot on their names by producing some other woman in the registrar office. The police has registered a case under Sections 421, 465, 468 and 171 of the IPC.

Two arrested: The police arrested Tara Chand and his mother, Guddi Bai, on Thursday in connection with the murder of a person in Hinjrawan Kalan village, in this district. According to the SP, Mr Rajbir Deswal , the two accused along with Mithu Ram allegedly murdered Saman Ram. The police has registered a case under Sections 302, 323 and 34 of the IPC.

SHAHABAD
Appointed:
The President of the Sarva Jati Morcha, Haryana, Mr O.P. Jindal, has appointed Mr Jeet Ram Dua, a former Municipal Commissioner, Shahabad, as General Secretary and Mr Milkhi Ram Khanpur Kolian as President (Rural) of the morcha in Kurukshetra district. Mr Sunil Kumar Gupta and Mr Jai Pal Panchal have been appointed Presidents of the district youth wing and backward cell of the morcha, respectively.

SIRSA
Proposed health camp:
The IMA, Sirsa, will hold a health mela at Kharian village in this district from February 27 to 28. In this camp family planning operations will be performed. Besides this, free vaccination against various diseases such as hepatitis-B (for children below 1 year), measles, an eye and blood donation camp will also be organised. The patients will be provided free lodging, boarding and medicines. In addition ECG, ultrasound and urine and blood test will also be done.

Eve teasing : Amit, a college student here, was handed over to the police on Tuesday on the charge of teasing a girl. The accused, allegedly, misbehaved with the girl when she was going to meet her friend. On her complaint, he was handed over to the police. His other associates were absconding.

Two arrested: The police seized 310 gram of opium from Rajroop Singh of Sahuwla village in this district on Tuesday. In another case, the police arrested Naggar Singh of Lakarnwali village in this district under the NDPS Act and recovered 3 kg of poppy husk from his possession.

One held: Rajinder Kumar, a farmer of Karamgarh village, was arrested by the Badagudha police on Tuesday on the charge of stealing canal water on February 20. The police has registered a case under Sections 379 and 430 of the IPC on a complaint lodged by officials of the Irrigation Department.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the Mini Bank Manager Association: President — Mr Sher Singh; General Secretary — Mr Inderjeet Singh Beniwal; and Treasurer — Mr Ram Kumar Sihag.

SONEPAT
Convicted :
Mr D K Sharma, the Judicial Magistrate of Sonepat, convicted nine persons of Sisana village, namely Rajbir, Rajinder, Jagbir, Raj, Satbir, Dalbir, Ishwar Singh, Har Narain and Kartar Singh under Section 427, IPC, on Wednesday and sentenced them to six-months' rigorous imprisonment each for causing injuries to Bedo, wife of one Risal Singh, her son and daughter with sharp-edged weapons while they were cutting trees from their fields on July 9, 1991.

Suspended : Mr K. Selvraj, the SSP, has placed Mr Samsher Singh Rana, the SHO of Gohana police station, under suspension and sent him to the Police Lines, Sonepat. According to police sources, this follows the death of a police constable, Sanjay, of Mandori village, under mysterious circumstances.

YAMUNANAGAR
Board's negligence:
Due to the negligence of the Board of School Education, Haryana, a few answer-sheets of middle standard examinations were reported to be without serial number. On Wednesday two answer-sheets were brought to The Tribune office here. In one answer-sheet only serial number was mentioned whereas the board name as well as other formalities were not completed and the second answer-sheet was without serial number.

Himachal Briefs
BILASPUR
Announced:
A sum of Rs 7.60 lakh will be spent on repair of the government employees quarters here and Ghumarwin, according to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ramesh Kapil. He said the PWD authorities had been asked to prepare estimates. He was presiding over a district-level meeting with employees leaders here on Tuesday.

KULU
Arrested :
Eighteen persons under Sections 34, 5 and 61, the Police Act, six persons under Section 41(2) and 109, the Indian Penal Code and one person under Sections 107 and 151, the Criminal Procedure Code, were arrested here during the past two weeks. This was told by the Superintendent of Police, on Wednesday. He said a special drive was launched by the district police. He informed that 72000 ml of illicit liquor, 570 ml of country-made liquor, 15000 ml of 'lugri' and 35 kg of 'lahan' were also seize. Cases against 19 persons were registered.

Stolen: The district police has arrested one Dunichand of Pechha village, near Kulu, who broke open the lock of the donation box of the Bijli Mahadev Temple and stole cash worth about Rs 8,000. A sum of Rs 6,112 has already been recovered from him. An FIR under Sections 457 and 380, IPC, was registered on Saturday in this regard.

MANDI
Election:
Mr Harish Sharma was elected President of the district unit of the NGO Federation on Wednesday. As many as 234 delegates from 15 of the 17 units of the district took part in the election. Mr Hem Raj Sharma and Mr Lal Singh Chawla were elected Senior Vice-President and General Secretary, respectively, of the unit.

SHIMLA

SOLAN
Fire:
A fire gutted a motor mechanic-cum-spareparts shop in the Padao locality of Dharampur, 15 km from here, on Tuesday. The fire was brought under control after an hour long fight by firemen and local people. Short-circuit was stated to be the cause of fire.
