LUDHIANA
Meeting:
A meeting of the Punjab Halwai Committee and the Punjab Bakery Association was held here under the chairmanship of Mr Avinash Chander and Mr S.S. Bindra. During the meeting, members criticised the government for the imposition of 1 per cent sales tax on various ingredients used by the bakers and sweet shop owners.

PATIALA
Condemned:
Dr Satwant Singh Mohi, member, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, in a statement here on Thursday condemned the manner in which the Navy chief Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat, was sacked. He said such decisions had to be handled carefully.
Pharmacists:
Pharmacists of Patiala, Nawanshahr and Muktsar districts will stage a dharna in front of the Civil Surgeon's office and the Deputy Commissioner's office in respective districts on January 8 in protest against the non-implementation of their demands. Their demands include the enhancement of pay scales and grant of time-bound scales.
Camp:
The Youth Service, Punjab, organised a 10-day NSS camp at Rajpura colony here. Government Girls Senior Secondary School and Shakuntala Girls Senior Secondary School participated in the camp. The students visited various slums and educated people about literacy and cleanliness.

HOSHIARPUR
Boy recovered:
Sanjiv Kumar Handa who was allegedly kidnapped on Thursday from his shop was recovered. Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, said here on Friday that the kidnappers had been identified and a case had been registered under Sections 364 and 34, IPC.

MOGA
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Raj Khetibari Sekhari Sabha, Moga district: President — Mr Hardev Singh; Vice-Presidents — Mr Balwinder Singh and Mr Sukhdev Singh; and Secretary — Mr Gurmel Singh.
Accident:
Three persons were injured when their car collided with another vehicle on the Moga-Ludhiana road on Thursday. The accident occurred due to thick fog.

KAPURTHALA
Farewell:
A function was organised at the local MD SD Senior Secondary School on Thursday to bid farewell to Mr S.P. Khanna, Principal of the school, who retired after serving the school for 22 years.

ROHTAK
Security sought:
Mr Arun Kumar Jain, a local newsagent, has sought police security and action against a youth who allegedly manhandled him on Thursday. In a complaint to the DC and the SSP, the victim alleged that Preet Singh Rathi manhandled him at gunpoint.

SONEPAT
Honoured:
The local branch of the Bank of India honoured its five customers at a function organised in connection with the silver jubilee celebrations on Wednesday. A medical check-up camp was also organised in which 100 persons were examined.
Cheating case:
The police has registered a case of cheating against two persons, including an employee of the local telephone exchange, on a complaint of Mr Rajnish Gandhi, a local resident. He alleged that he had been deprived of a telephone connection despite depositing the fee with the Telecom Department.
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among industrialists against the inefficient and unsatisfactory working of the District Industries Centre, Sonepat. The representatives of various industries have brought their problems to the notice of the Industries Minister, Mr S.P. Mehta, during his recent visit to the city.
Tree felling:
The Haryana Government has been suffering a huge financial loss due to the illegal felling of trees in the district. People alleged that certain officials of the Forest Department were in league with unscrupulous persons in this racket. The Forest Department Mazdoor Union has demanded an inquiry into the scandal.

YAMUNANAGAR
Office-bearers:

FATEHABAD
14 arrested:
The district police has registered as many as 41 cases of power thefts during the last month and arrested 14 persons in this connection, according to Mr Ranbir Deswal, SP.
Murder mystery:
The mystery over a three-year-old murder case at Ratia in this district was solved on Thursday. Mr Rajbir Deswal, SP, revealed that Dayal Singh, a watchman, was not murdered over a theft attempt as was thought earlier in 1996 but got killed by persons having illicit relations with his wife.
