India may induct extra seamer

HAMILTON, Jan 1 (PTI) — Desperate to pull off a Test win abroad and square the ongoing series with New Zealand, a beleaguered India are likely to include an extra seamer and bring in stylish VVS Laxman as opener for the third and final test beginning here tomorrow.

The Indian decision to pick a third seamer, giving Robin Singh (jr) his first cap or recall Debasish Mohanty, has been influenced by the hard and green Trust Park pitch.

The Indian attack led by only two pacemen Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad at Wellington lacked depth and the decision to bring in a third seamer has also been clearly influenced by the fact that teenaged off-spinner Harbhajan Singh failed to impress and went wicketless.

India, who lost the second Test at Wellington to go down 0-1 in the series after letting the Kiwis off the hook due to brittle batting and ineffective bowling, not to speak of unimpressive fielding, have a tough job on hand against the spirited Kiwis.

Stylish Laxman is all set to bolster the batting and looks likely to replace vice-captain Ajay Jadeja in the other change the visitors are likely to make.

New Zealand will also sport two changes in their side, left-hander Roger Twose replacing injured batsman Nathan Astle and off-spinner Paul Wiseman making room for left-arm paceman Geoff Allot.

Proof of Laxman getting the nod, if any required, came in the news that the Hyderabad batsman would stay in the team for the one-dayers.

Navjot Sidhu, in all likelihood, will get a chance to return home with head held high. The Patiala opener has made only 52 runs on this tour from five innings, with 34 in the second being his highest.

Sidhu, however, was unconcerned that the Hamilton pitch has been relaid. "I remember I had a knock of 98 in the 1993-94 one-off Test here," said the gritty opener who was then caught by Adam Parore off left-arm spinner Matthew Hart, now no longer in the Kiwi team.

Indeed, only two survivors from that Test are now in the New Zealand team — Stephen Fleming and Parore. As a matter of fact, Fleming made his debut here and reached 92 in the second innings. He wishes to revive his batting fortunes here. "I was pretty distressed by my dismissals in the two innings at Wellington. Particularly, the one in the second knock to Kumble," said the Kiwi captain.

With the loss in Wellington after the first test was washed out, India will have to play positive but the Kiwis are a buoyant lot. Their late order twice came good to frustrate the Indians after their bowlers produced tidy efforts to mop up the Indian top order and tail with ridiculous ease.

The picturesque West Trust Park stadium pitch does not traditionally aid pacemen, but India might have no option but to include Debashish Mohanty or Robin Singh (jr).

A victory will be crucial for India, whose calendar has been loaded with one-dayers. A win would keep them in right shape ahead of their crunch two-Test series at home against arch-rivals Pakistan followed by the Asian Test Championship.

Indian batting, barring the centuries by Azharuddin and Tendulkar in either innings and their useful partnerships, developed the same cracks that have undone them in the past.

The batting failure almost resembled the test defeat against Zimbabwe in the one-off away Test and revealed the team’s lack of character in approaching Tests.

Veteran opener Navjot Sidhu, expected to be retained in preference over vice-captain Ajay Jadeja, will be under pressure to click in what will certainly be his final match on New Zealand soil as he alongwith Harbhajan Singh and Robin Singh (jr) will return home to make way for Robin Singh (sr), Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Nikhil Chopra for the onedayers.

The 19-year-old Harbhajan Singh hardly looked his old confident self and the recent controversy over his bowling action seems to have shaken his confidence. He also compounded his poor bowling with silly fielding errors.

Azharuddin, who blasted the Indian fielding errors which contributed a lot to the Wellington defeat, also castigated the openers. ‘We have chosen specialist openers for the tour and the onus is on them to deliver,’ he said.

One-drop Rahul Dravid, retained for the one-day series, also failed to click and showed surprising impetuosity throwing away his wicket in the second innings.

The Kiwi camp has every reason to be proud about the way they handled pressure to tilt the scales in their favour after the ding-dong battle over the first four days.

Fleming was unwilling to rate his team as favourites for the Test. "I would say we will take the match step by step, as we did in Wellington," said the Kiwi skipper.

Man of the match for the first Test, Simon Doull too was cautious. "Obviously, it is too much to expect the same success here as I had in the first innings in Wellington. Performances like that don’t happen everyday".

Debate over India’s fielding rages

HAMILTON, Jan 1 (PTI) — Their batting and bowling already under scrutiny, India’s fielding deficiencies have emerged the major issue of debate on the eve of the crucial third and final cricket Test against New Zealand which begins here tomorrow.

Why a young team with an average age of 25 still does not give off its best in the field defies description and many see it as a "pacing-out" measure by cricketers to ensure they are injury-free in this relentless cycle of cricket.

Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin strongly criticised the fielding lapses on the final day of the Wellington Test and the defeat there has left India desperate to reverse the verdict at West Trust Park.

The Indian fielders have been termed ‘loiterers’ by Richard Boock of the New Zealand Herald. "To mention India’s ground fielding in the second innings of New Zealand at Basin Reserve would have been in direct breach of the trade description act," he has written.

The desire to hold themselves back for the next match seems to be affecting the team’s current fortunes. "India have not exactly troubled themselves with over-exertion during this tour, and are possibly beginning to reap the dividends of their strict work-to-rule philosophy,’ the paper added.

Only Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and Rahul Dravid did well, but the rest at times looked hilarious as India appeared to be the worst fielding side in the world at the moment.

The lack of fielding initiative was ironical as the Indian board had engaged Australian Andrew Kokinos as physical trainer specifically to improve the fitness levels of the players to goad them to field better. Teams like South Africa and Australia have refined fielding into an art.

Azharuddin, after the Wellington loss, said. "I have been saying about the fielding for four years now. I don’t have any answers... It has to come from within."

Playing the game, one-dayers in particular, round the year hardly gives players time to work on fitness or technique, leave alone fielding and their practice sessions have also been less than impressive.

When asked, Azharuddin would only say, ‘we have played less Test cricket this year compared to one-dayers. A balance is always preferred. But it is for the board to decide."

The board has appointed Bobby Simpson as consultant, but the Australian, who is due to join the team before the one-day series starts on January 9, has been working only off and on with the result not even men for specialist positions have been created.

New Zealand cannot believe their luck in finding an opposition which is as fielding-shy as India. "They may have run as close in batting and bowling — but we were superior all through the Test in fielding," captain Stephen Fleming said.

Paceman Simon Doull was encouraged to say: "We have been inconsistent in the past. Now is our best chance to show it is a thing of the past — by winning the Hamilton Test."

It looks difficult for anyone to stop them — least of all the leaden-footed Indians.

Australia, England pin hopes on spin

SYDNEY, Jan 1 (Reuters) — The fifth and final Ashes Test between Australia and England is shaping as a battle of spin after the two sides predictably pinned their faith in their slow bowlers.

Australia, needing to either win or draw the match to claim a historic sixth straight series win, have rushed star leg-spinner Shane Warne back to the side after their shock 12-run loss in the fourth Test in Melbourne cut their series lead to 2-1.

Warne has not played for Australia in nine months since undergoing shoulder surgery in May but was recalled because of the Sydney Cricket Ground’s reputation as a spinner’s pitch.

Australia also named leg-spinner Stuart MacGill and off-spinner Colin Miller in their 12-man squad but captain Mark Taylor said it was unlikely all three would play.

"That would be a big punt," Taylor said, suggesting Warne and MacGill would play as the two spinners with Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming the two pacemen.

Warne, who stands unchallenged as the world’s premier slow bowler, has struggled to reproduce his best form since returning to first-class cricket last month.

But the 29-year-old was recalled without hesitation after Australia’s fourth Test defeat because of his outstanding record against the English and the SCG’s reputation as a turning pitch.

"I think it’s added a bit of spice to the series," Warne said. "There’s generally a result in Sydney, so it’ll either be 3-1 or 2-2.

"England probably don’t play leggies that well but I’m sure they’ll come out with a point to prove. They’re on a bit of a roll after winning so maybe they’ll come out and attack and try to win the game."

Taylor said he was unconcerned about taking two wrist spinners into one of Australia’s most important matches in years.

Although Australia have already retained the Ashes, a defeat in Sydney would cost Taylor’s men a record-breaking sixth successive series win, a milestone they are desperate to reach to ensure their place among the greatest teams in history.

"We would only pick two legspinners if they were the two best spinners in the country and both were bowling well," he said. "They are doing that now so there’s no reason we can’t do it."

England have named two slow bowlers in their 13-man squad, with left-arm spinner Ashley Giles joining Peter Such at the expense of the other off-spinner Robert Croft.

The pair came into the squad after batsman Mark Butcher, who scored a century in the first Test but has flopped since, and paceman Angus Fraser were dropped.

Giles arrived in Australia only last week with the limited-overs team but has been rushed into the squad.

'Enough evidence to punish Akram, Malik'

LAHORE, Jan 1 (AFP) — A judicial commission yesterday warned two former Pakistani captains Wasim Akram and Salim Malik that there was enough evidence to punish them over match fixing allegations, officials said.

The judge called Wasim and Malik to his chamber and told them there was evidence "against them of involvement in match fixing and betting so they come fully prepared in the next meeting," the Pakistan cricket board’s legal advisor Ali Sibtain Fazli said.

The commission had summoned 12 players over the allegations but Fazli said only eight responded.

The commission issued bailable warrants against a wicketkeeper, Rashid Latif for his failure to turn up for cross examination, Fazli said.

Rashid, who is attending to his sick father, criticised the working of the commission in a press interview yesterday.

"What he has said can come under contempt for court so warrants have been issued and Judge Malik Mohammad Qayyum was furious over his remarks," Fazli told AFP.

Basit Ali and Moin Khan also failed to appear. The reason for their absence was not immediately known. However, fellow paceman Ata ur-Rehman, who also did not show up, has said his wife is sick in England, sources said.

Wasim, Malik, Ejaz Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed and Waqar Younis - all allegedly involved in match fixing and betting -appeared to cross examine their accusers.

Wasim, Malik and Ejaz were implicated in an interim report by an earlier investigation committee in September.

The judge adjourned the hearing till January 16 after Wasim’s laywer Hasan Tariq Rahim requested details of allegations against his client.

Current captain Aamir Sohail, paceman Aaqib Javed and former manager Intikhab Alam, who accused team players of involvement in illegal practices, were present in the court.

"We have also told Malik he can have a last chance to cross question Australian players if he intends to join the commission in Melbourne," Fazli said.

Mark Waugh, Shane Warne and another Australian player Tim May had alleged Malik offered them bribes to perform poorly during Australia’s 1994 tour of Pakistan.

Malik was absolved of charges after the Australian trio refused to come to Pakistan to substantiate the allegations.

Fazli, his assistant Ali Sajjad and Registrar of the Lahore High Court Abdus Salam Khawar, are to leave for Australia on January 5 to cross examine Waugh and Warne over the allegations.

The hearing is scheduled in Melbourne on January 8, he said.

A former international player, Salim Pervez, has also claimed he gave Malik and Mushtaq $ 100,000 to throw a match in 1994 in Sri Lanka.

A warrant was also issued against Pervez for not attending today’s proceedings.

Paceman Ata ur-Rehman has also alleged Wasim offered him money to bowl poorly against New Zealand in the Christchurch one-day international in 1994.

PCB surprised over Test venues

ISLAMABAD, Jan 1 (PTI) — The Pakistan Cricket Board today expressed surprise over selection of New Delhi and Chennai as Test venues for the forthcoming Indian Tour of Pakistan cricket team but said it has full confidence on the Indian authorities for providing proper security for the matches.

PCB chairman Kahlid Mahmood told PTI over phone from Lahore he was yet to get official intimation from the Indian board (BCCI) about the venues for the series starting in the last week of January.

When told BCCI had already announced the itinerary and that the first Test would be in New Delhi and the second at Chennai or Kanpur, he expressed surprise saying: "These were not the cities which were discussed as probable venues when we visited India recently".

Mahmood, however, confirmed that Calcutta was discussed as one of the probable venues.

The BCCI has selected Calcutta for the India-Pakistan Asian Test championship match from February 16 to 20.

But the PCB chairman was quick to add they had full confidence in the Indian authorities for providing proper security arrangements at the venues where Pakistani team would be playing and that till now there was no hitch in the tour going ahead.

"As of today the tour is on", he said but added PCB would satisfy itself about the venues by getting information from other sources including the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.

Mahmood, along with PCB chief executive Majid Khan, had visited India about a fortnight ago to discuss with the Indian board officials the security arrangements for the tour.

The Pakistan cricket authorities had earlier expressed their concern about the security aspect of the tour in view of the threats by Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena that it will not allow the Pakistan team to play on Indian soil.

Pakistan cricket team is visiting India for a full-fledged tour after a gap of eleven years. Last year the team had played in the Independence Cup tournament.

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had also welcomed Pakistani team’s tour of India and assured full security during the series, which also includes a one-day tri-series series, starting March 19, involving Sri Lanka.

Foreman fight still on, says Holmes

EASTON (Pennsylvania), Jan 1 (AFP) — Larry Holmes has said that his fight against fellow former world champion George Foreman would go ahead next month despite reports the bout could be shelved due to lack of interest.

Holmes said the fight between the two former heavyweights was still on for January 23 at Houston in Texas.

On Tuesday New York’s Daily News reported the fight would be called off after promoter Roger Levitt failed to raise the 14-million-dollar combined purse promised to the fighters. It said he had only raised a tenth of that sum.

Holmes said: "Levitt has assured me there is nothing to stop the fight going ahead. I am still getting ready for Texas."

Foreman, who will be 50 on January 10, has a current record of 76 wins five losses with 68 knockouts, last fought in November 1997.

Foreman became the oldest major champion in boxing history at the age of 45 by knocking out Michael Moorer to win the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation crowns in 1994.

The 49-year-old Holmes is 66-6 with 42 knockouts. His most recent bout came in July last year when he won a 10-round decision from Maurice Harris.

German club signs 15 Cuban players

HAVANA, Jan 1 (Reuters) — A German fourth division soccer club, seeking to boost its promotion chances with an injection of Caribbean talent, has signed up virtually the entire Cuban senior national squad in an unprecedented deal.

Cuba’s ruling Communist Party, which supervises sports on the island, announced the agreement yesterday, telling the nation that football was "open to initiatives which, of course do not harm its sovereignty or that of Cuban sport in general."

The 15 Cuban players, all over 25 and unknown internationally, will leave for Bonner SC, a small club from the city of Bonn, on January 31, under a cooperation agreement between the German team and Cuba’s state-run soccer federation.

"The German (team) directors have deposited their entire trust in this ‘cubanization’ of Bonner in an attempt to rise immediately to the third division in a nation which is a world power in this sport," Communist Party daily Granma said. "The explosiveness of the Caribbean footballer, and his speed, were virtues that surely caught the eye of the Bonn officials."

Those officials, however, clearly overlooked Cuba’s poor football record. While the island, with only 11 million inhabitants, has a remarkable athletics and baseball tradition — thanks in part to vigorous state promotion — its football team has not made inroads internationally.

Boutter, Depuis in final

MUMBAI, Jan 1 (PTI) — Unseeded Julian Boutter of France and his third seeded countryman and Ahmedabad leg winner Anthony Dupuis will clash in the men’s singles final of the $ 50,000 ATP Challenger tennis at the Dr R.A. Ranade courts here tomorrow.

In the semifinals today, 279th ranked Boutter and 206th ranked Dupuis, recorded contrasting wins.

Boutter rallied splendidly after dropping the first set on tie-break to oust qualifier Sebastian De Chaunac of France 6-7 (4-7) 6-1, 6-4 in one hour 59 minutes while Dupuis sidelined unseeded Gregory Carraz also from France 6-2 6-2 in just 58 minutes.

Boutter, who served seven aces and six double faults, dropped his serve in the very first game of the first set but fought well to break his opponent in the fourth and forced a tie-break.

De Chaunac, who served three aces and four doubles faults in the match, failed to win points at the crucial time and lost the tie-break 4-7.

However, he lifted his game a couple of notches in the second set and with break in the third, fifth and seventh games won the set at 6-1.

In the decider Boutter broke his rival in the sixth but dropped his serve in the next game. He again got the crucial break in the tenth to wrap-up the match at 6-4.

Dupuis, who served as many as seven aces in the match, broke Carraz in the second and sixth games to win 6-2.

Nothing went right for Carraz, who served six double faults. He dropped his serve in the first and third games to lose the set 2-6.

The losing semi-finalists collected 25 ATP points and $ 1255 (Rs 50,200) for their efforts.

In the men’s doubles semifinals, top seeded Israeli pair of Eyal Ran and Noam Behr sidelined Indian Davis cupper Syed Fazaluddin and his French partner Sebastian De Chaunac 6-3 7-5 in one hour 15 minutes. The losers shared $ 540 (Rs 21,600).

Dalal sisters honoured
Tribune News Service

ROHTAK, Jan 1 — The Dalal sisters-Kamla and Sunita — members of the silver medal winning women’s hockey team at the Bangkok Asian games were today honoured with ‘gold medals’ by inhabitants of their native village Chiri, 25 km from here.

Men, women and children of all ages came on to the streets to accord a welcome to the two sisters, who they said, had brought glory to Haryana, India and the village.

Villagers were slightly dismayed when they learnt that Sunita could not reach the village from Delhi due to dense fog. But the enthusiastic villagers asked their youngest sister Kavita to represent Sunita.

Kamla and Kavita were taken in procession in a tastefully decorated tractor trailer from Lakhan Majra to Chiri. The youngsters danced all along the route.

When the procession entered the village, women also joined the celebrations. Welcome banners were put up at Lakhan Majra and the secondary school in the village where the function was held.

The oldest woman panch of the village, Mrs Sarupi Devi, presented them shawls while the oldest man of the village, the 95-year-old Prabhu Singh put gold medals around their necks.

Earlier Kamla told TNS that she felt proud over the love and affection showered on them by the villagers. She felt bad that the state government had not even congratulated the team, which had five players from Haryana.

Kamla and Sunita, daughters of a farmer, Mr Ranbir Singh, had their early education in the village and after that they shifted to Rohtak. Kamla and later Sunita learnt the tricks of the game at the Mahadevi Kanya Inter-College, Dehra Dun under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India.

Kamla had represented the country in the 1995- six nation tournament and the Harare World Cup in 1997. She was accorded the ‘best forward’ award by the NSA and "Railway Rattan" by Northern Railway, where she is employed. Sunita joined Northern Railway as UDC on November 20, a couple of weeks before flying to Bangkok.

Hyderabad in driver's seat
From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Jan 1 — A superbly organised century by 13-year-old batting sensation A.T. Rayudu enabled Hyderabad to score a comfortable 223 for 4 against Bihar on day one of the All India Vijay Merchant Cricket Tournament at the Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium here today.

With a thick blanket of fog having enveloped the ground, the day's proceedings started more than two hours behind schedule. After skipper N. Vishal won the toss, Hyderabad opener Ibrahim Khaleel was devoured by medium pacer Sanjeev Ranjan as he went for a front foot drive.

The diminutive Rayudu, whom Mohammed Azharuddin rates highly, hit 15 boundary in his splendid effort to slowly take the match away from Bihar. Before stepping on the crease today, Rayudu was already high on confidence, having scored 213 not out against Goa, 116 against Kerala and 57 against Tamil Nadu in the South Zone league fixture.

Without taking anything out of Rayudu's efforts it may be said that the Bihar bowlers lacked teeth and erred in giving too much width, which enabled Rayudu to cut and pull with aplomb.

Hardly had the cheers died down when Rayudu completed his well deserved century. He launched into a front foot drive to see the cover fieldsman clasp the ball much to the delight of the Bihar bowlers.

Score board: Hayderabad: 223 for 4 (Ibrahim Khaleel b Sanjay Rajan 19. Kalyan Kumar c S. Rajan b Ambuj Kumar 16, Sanjay Singh c Prabhat Kumar b Satinder Mishra 53 A.T. Rayudu c S. Rajan b Satinder Mishra 100. N. Vishal batting 31, Satyodi batting 1.

Bowling: M. Chakravorty 12-3-31-0. S. Rajan 12-2-32-1. Satinder Mishra 25-3-89-2. Ambuj Kumar 20. 2-6-43-1. Prabhat Kumar 5-2-8-1.

Fall of wickets 1-23. 2-70. 3-111. 4-218. Total 223 for 4.

Meanwhile in another match left arm medium pacer Steve Lazarus (3 for 18) and right arm off spinner Dharmani Chand (3 for 32) enabled Karnataka to bundle out Baroda for a meagre 115 runs on the first day of the All-India Vijay Merchant Cricket Tournament at the DCW cricket ground here today. At draw of stumps, aided by a sedate 18 from Vijay, Karnataka had scored 30 for loss (Vijay 18 not out. Sudhir Rao 8 not out).
