Rally: Mr T.R. Sarangal, Deputy Commissioner,
flagged off a rally of school children on
Thursday in connection with the road safety week.
The children carrying banners passed through the
main markets of Sirhind town. Mr Sarangal said
that eye check-up camps, camps to check
pollution, lectures on road safety and painting
competitions would also be organised during the
road safety week.JALANDHAR
Pulse polio campaign: The Civil Surgeon, Dr
C.P. Bansal, said that the Health and Family
Welfare Department had made arrangements to
immunise more than 2.60 lakh children up to the
age of 5 by administering polio drops to them at
312 camps to be set up on January 17. Special
mobile teams have been set up for the children of
poor labourers. The mobile teams will administer
drops at the "railway station" also.

Demand: The Arhtiya Association of Kurali
submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister,
Punjab, on Tuesday and demanded that the State
Government should not construct the proposed new
grain market near Siswan road. They demanded that
the new market should be constructed near the old
grain market. The memorandum, signed by more than
50 commission agents of Kurali, stated that the
construction of the grain market near Siswan road
was not in the interest of commission agents and
farmers, as the farmers would have to cover more
distance to bring their produce to the new
market.

PMT classes: The IAS and Allied Services
Training Centre at Punjabi University here will
start PMT coaching classes from January 20 to
prepare candidates for the PMT test to be held in
June. Dr G.S. Bajwa, Director of the centre, said
here on Wednesday that the candidates who had
secured 50 per cent marks in plus two could apply
before January 12 for the three month course. A
test interview would be held in the Director's
office on January 14 and 15 for PMT and CET
classes, respectively. The SC and ST candidates
would be provided coaching free of cost and would
also be granted scholarship as per rules. Fee for
general category candidates is Rs 10,000 for the
entire course.
Appeal: The
Punjab Brahmin Sabha appealed to the Chief
Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to introduce
Sanskrit as third language in the state,
according to a press note issued by the sabha's
general secretary, Mr T.N. Sharma, here on
Wednesday.
