FATEHGARH SAHIB
Rally:
Mr T.R. Sarangal, Deputy Commissioner, flagged off a rally of school children on Thursday in connection with the road safety week. The children carrying banners passed through the main markets of Sirhind town. Mr Sarangal said that eye check-up camps, camps to check pollution, lectures on road safety and painting competitions would also be organised during the road safety week.

JALANDHAR
Pulse polio campaign:
The Civil Surgeon, Dr C.P. Bansal, said that the Health and Family Welfare Department had made arrangements to immunise more than 2.60 lakh children up to the age of 5 by administering polio drops to them at 312 camps to be set up on January 17. Special mobile teams have been set up for the children of poor labourers. The mobile teams will administer drops at the "railway station" also.

KHARAR
Demand:
The Arhtiya Association of Kurali submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Punjab, on Tuesday and demanded that the State Government should not construct the proposed new grain market near Siswan road. They demanded that the new market should be constructed near the old grain market. The memorandum, signed by more than 50 commission agents of Kurali, stated that the construction of the grain market near Siswan road was not in the interest of commission agents and farmers, as the farmers would have to cover more distance to bring their produce to the new market.

Elected:

PATIALA
PMT classes:
The IAS and Allied Services Training Centre at Punjabi University here will start PMT coaching classes from January 20 to prepare candidates for the PMT test to be held in June. Dr G.S. Bajwa, Director of the centre, said here on Wednesday that the candidates who had secured 50 per cent marks in plus two could apply before January 12 for the three month course. A test interview would be held in the Director's office on January 14 and 15 for PMT and CET classes, respectively. The SC and ST candidates would be provided coaching free of cost and would also be granted scholarship as per rules. Fee for general category candidates is Rs 10,000 for the entire course.

Appeal: The Punjab Brahmin Sabha appealed to the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to introduce Sanskrit as third language in the state, according to a press note issued by the sabha's general secretary, Mr T.N. Sharma, here on Wednesday.top

BHIWANI
Loan camps:
As many as 33 loan camps will be organised in various blocks of this district under combined rural development programme to provide loan and subsidy to families living below poverty line. These camps will be organised at various villages and bank officers will sanction loans after the verification of application forms. Loan and other facilities are being provided on liberal conditions under various schemes by the District Industries Centre to unemployed youths under the self-employment scheme in the district.

HISAR
New project:
The Haryana Government has formulated a Rs 2600 crore new project to tackle the waterlogging problem in the state, this was stated by Mr Kanwal Singh, State Panchayat and Development Minister, while addressing a public meeting in Juglan village, near here, on Tuesday. He said the State Government had sanctioned Rs 150 crore for the repair of main roads and rural link roads. The task would be completed by the end of the current financial year. The Minister also sanctioned Rs 3 lakh for the construction of a road in the village.

ROHTAK
Body found:
The police of Beri town in Jhajjar district has found the body of a youth, who was murdered allegedly on Tuesday night. The body was found in a car parked at Dadha village on Jhajjar-Dadri road on Wednesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Balwan Singh, a resident of Dudhwa village. According to reports the body bore marks of strangulation. A case has been registered and the body sent for post-mortem examination.

Traffic week:
The police has launched a vigorous campaign to regulate the traffic on the main roads of the city in order to reduce the number of accidents. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr P.K. Mahapatra, and the SP, Mr K. Selvraj, have appealed to the social and voluntary organisations to cooperate with the police to make the traffic week a success.

BILASPUR
Felling of trees:
The gram panchayat at Salwaad, about 80 km, from here, has warned the Forest Department that it would be forced to take action in case the department failed to take action against the culprits responsible for illegal felling and smuggling of khair trees in the area and in Malhot forest range. The President of the Panchayat, Mr Kanshiram, alleged that the illegal felling had caused a loss of lakhs of rupees to the government and farmers had also been hit by this illegal activity.

CHAMBA
Water supply:
The regular supply of water from the Jadera drinking water supply scheme to the town was restored on Thursday after four days. According to a spokesman of the Irrigation-cum-Public Health Department, the water supply had been disrupted due to leakage from a dislocated joint in a 13 km long gravity line at Maredi in the suburbs of Chamba town.

SHIMLA
Fire:
Ten heads of cattle were burnt alive as a fire broke out at Sear village, near Ghanahatti, in the district on Wednesday. There was no loss of human life in the blaze.
