ABOHAR
Attack:
A wine contractor, Mr Roop Chand Bansal, was assaulted on Thursday by certain persons who had been following his car when he was going to his Gaushala Road office. Mr Bansal's car was reportedly hit by another car outside a private hospital. On questioning, the assailants attacked him and his driver. A case has been registered under Section 307, IPC.

AMRITSAR
Elected:
Brig Mohinder Singh (retd) has been elected President of the All-India Ex-Servicemen League (AIESL), New Delhi, for a period of three years, according to a press note issued here on Thursday. Earlier, he was the President of the AIESL, Punjab and Chandigarh unit of the league.

Gang busted: The Majitha police has busted an inter-state gang, which had been stealing gold from jewellery shops, by arresting Jatinder Kumar, alias Bobby, and Asha. Mr H.S. Sidhu, district police chief, in a press note issued here said the two gang members had confessed to their crime. A case has been registered under Sections 379 and 411, IPC.

FARIDKOT
Deputation:
A deputation of the Punjab Recognised and Affiliated Schools Association met the Chairman, Punjab School Education Board, Mohali, on Wednesday to apprise him of various problems being faced by the institutions.

Club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the Red Cross Senior Citizens Welfare Club: President — Mr Gurbachan Singh Brar; Senior Vice-President — Mr Balwant Rai Gupt; Vice-Presidents — Mr Ranjit Singh Sandhu and Mr Balour Chand Dhingra; General Secretary — Prof Dilwar Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Amar Singh Sodhi.

GURDASPUR
Drinking water:
Resentment prevails among residents of Chakkar village under Dhar subdivision for the government's failure to provide them with drinking water. The villagers alleged that they had to drink water from the village pond which was unhygienic. The village has been connected with the Bhungal Bhadani water supply scheme but frequent power cuts deny them this facility.

Safety week: A road safety week has been started in the district, according to the District Transport Officer, Mr Rajiv Prashar. A campaign has been launched to equip all tractor-trailers in the district with reflectors, and social organisation have been approached to cooperate with the department. Drivers would also be examined for their eyesight.

Cheating case: The police here has registered a case of cheating against Garib Masoh of Kahnuwan for allegedly alluring people to multiply their deposits under the investment-cum-lucky scheme. Lucky and chit funds have been banned by the Punjab Government.

KHARAR
Residential houses:
The Rotary International has formulated a scheme to provide low cost residential houses to the down-trodden sections of the society by giving financial aid of $ 2000 per unit. This was stated by Dr Gulshan Thakral, district Governor (3080), on Thursday.

LUDHIANA
Solidarity expressed:
Members of the Council of Ludhiana Churches have expressed their solidarity with the Christians of Gujarat who have been affected by the ethnic clashes there. Rev Yunus Massey, Chairman of the council said they would be organising a special prayer on January 10 for their counterparts in Gujarat.

MOGA
Ban sought:
Several local organisations and residents of various localities who are frustrated over the insanitary condition of the town on Thursday urged the district authorities to ban the use of polythene bags.

NAWANSHAHR
Medical camp:
The Doaba Social Welfare Society organised a free medical camp at Rampur Attari village, 20 km from here, on Tuesday. Mr Ravinder Kumar, General Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated it. Medicines free of cost were given to poor patients.

NSS camp: The Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Rahon, 7 km from here, organised a 10-day NSS camp on the school campus. Sweaters for poor students were distributed, and levelling of the ground and beautification of the school campus were done during the camp.

PATIALA
Appointed:
The Punjab University Vice-Chancellor, Dr J.S. Puar, has appointed Dr Bhawdeep Singh, Reader, as head of Guru Kashi campus, Talwandi Sabo, for a period of three years, according to a press note issued here on Thursday.

Promoted: Dr Amrit Lal Paul was promoted to Station Director of the All India Radio, Patiala, according to a press note issued here on Thursday.

PSEB union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Punjab State Electricity Board Karamchari Dal: Chairman — Mr Malook Singh; President — Mr Jagga Singh; General Secretary — Mr Surjit Singh; and Senior Vice-President — Mr Surjit Singh.

Examination: The annual examinations (theory) of undergraduate and postgraduate classes which were earlier scheduled to start from April 7 and 17, respectively, will now be held from April 17. A press note of the university issued here on Thursday said the practical examinations of regular undergraduate classes would be conducted before the theory exams and for correspondence students after the theory exams.

Lathi-charge:
Mr Amarjit Sharma, President, Punjab Halwai and Tea Stall Union, in a statement issued here on Thursday condemned the lathi-charge on sweet-meat sellers and bakers who were agitating peacefully in support of their demands for scrapping of the Sales Tax Bill in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

Dowry death: The police here has booked Gir Raj, husband of Rajesh (24) of Ghata village, and her in-laws for Rajesh's alleged dowry death. She had committed suicide by hanging herself. A case has been registered on a complaint by Ram Kishan, her father of Hasanpur village.

Robbery: Armed robbers looted a jewellery shop at Roshanpura on Thursday. According to the information, four persons came to the shop and looted it at gunpoint.

Road safety week:
The police here is observing a road safety week from Wednesday. During the week special attention will be given to accident preventive measures with the help of various voluntary social organisations, according to Mr B.S. Sandhu, SP.

Arrested: The police here on a tip-off, has arrested Purshotam Lal Kamboj of Kherekhan village and recovered 320 kg of poppy husk from him. Sunil, alias Happy, of Rajput Mohalla was also arrested . Two scooters were recovered from his possession. top

Special drive:
The police here has arrested 16 persons and registered cases against them after raids at various places in a special drive against illicit liquor. The Superintendent of the Police, Mr Anurag Garg, said here on Thursday that country-made liquor, Indian-made foreign liquor and eight drums of lahan were seized at Majari village.
