Cong splits
ITANAGAR, Jan
20 (PTI) The main opposition party, Arunachal
Congress led by former Chief Minister Gegong Apang
suffered a split today two days after it was voted out of
power as the Mukut Mithi ministry faces a trust vote
tomorrow in the assembly. Mr Apang resigned on Monday as
he lost the confidence vote a week after his Arunachal
Congress split for the first time leading to the
formation of breakaway group Arunachal Congress (M).9 killed in bus mishap
AHMEDABAD,
Jan 20 (PTI) Nine passengers were killed, seven of
them on the spot, and 30 injured when a private bus
collided with a tempo Trax on the Sevalia-Dakor road in
Kheda district of Gujarat today. The bus carrying 40
passengers was proceeding towards Dakor when it dashed
against the tempo Trax parked on the roadside at Malvan
Patia. The police has identified four of the deceased as
D.S. Tomar and Babulal Jain of Indore, P.P. Desai of
Rajkot and Jagdish Ahir of Ahmedabad. The injured were
admitted to the Dahod and Anand hospitals.
Japans plea
to Pak
TOKYO, Jan 20
(PTI) Japan today asked Pakistan to "exercise
restraint" over its reported plan to test missiles
and said it could heighten tension with India. "We
urge the Pakistani authorities to exercise restraint
because a missile test could heighten tension between
India and Pakistan and could escalate nuclear race in the
region," Director-General for the Ministry of Arms
Control and Scientific Affairs, Nobuyasu Abe said in a
statement.

in Sind
ISLAMABAD,
Jan 20 (UNI) The Muttahida Quami Movement chief,
Mr Altaf Hussain, would have declared a
government-in-exile in Sind had Governor's rule not been
imposed in the violence-plagued province, the Sind
Governor Lt-Gen (retd) Moinuddin Haider has said in an
interview in which he declared the government's intention
to wipe out all the dirt. In an interview to a local
paper, Gen Moinuddin Haider said the Muttahida chief
always cherished a desire to establish his own
independent country. He said the majority of the
Muttahida elements were anti-national and a big operation
was in the offing after Id.
Pol Pot
PHNOM PENH,
Jan 20 (AFP) Notorious Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot
committed suicide in April last when he found out former
comrades planned to hand him over to the USA, according
to a leading Asian magazine. The Far Eastern Economic
Review said Pol Pot took his own life after he discovered
that Khmer Rouge military commander Ta Mok offered,
through Thai military channels, to hand over the deposed
leader to the US authorities.
16 killed in
Algeria
ALGIERS, Jan
20 (Reuters) Muslim rebels killed 16 soldiers and
wounded 11 in two ambushes in Algeria, local newspapers
reported today. Muslim guerrillas set off a roadside bomb
as vehicles carrying soldiers passed near Draa-El-Mizan
area in Tizi-Ouzou province, 90 km east of Algiers on
Sunday, said La Tribune daily. As the bomb exploded,
rebels hiding on both sides of the road machine-gunned
the soldiers, killing nine of them. In a similar ambush,
rebels killed seven soldiers and wounded 11 others on the
night of Saturday.

NEW DELHI,
Jan 20 (UNI) The Supreme Court today gave four
weeks' time to Nagaland Chief Secretary to file a better
and comprehensive affidavit detailing steps taken by the
state government to set up industrial estates for the
wood-based industries. The time was given by a
three-Judge Bench comprising Chief Justice A.S. Anand, Mr
Justice B.N. Kirpal and Mr Justice V.N. Khare during
resumed hearing of public interest petition, highlighting
degradation of forests in the country and seeking
directions to preserve forests and stop illegal felling
of trees.
