Welfare schemes:
The District Development and Planning Board has spent Rs 9 crore on welfare schemes, Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner, said while addressing a gathering at an open darbar held at Manhota village on Thursday.

JALANDHAR
Traffic control measures:
To control and regulate the traffic, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Som Prakash, has imposed a ban on the entry of goods carriers in the city areas from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

KAPURTHALA
Judges' posting:
The Sessions Judge, Mr V.B. Handa, has been posted to Amritsar as the District and Sessions Judge. Mr Baldev Singh, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Jalandhar, will take over as the Sessions Judge at Kapurthala. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has also posted Mr Charanjit Bawa, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Ludhiana to Sangrur. Mr M. Khan, Additional District and Sessions Judge Gurdaspur, will take over as the District and Sessions Judge, Kapurthala.

LUDHIANA
Workshop:
A national workshop on "sustainable aquaculture" concluded here on Friday at Punjab Agricultural University. Scientists recommended that fishery should be considered as part of agriculture and for better feed and efficient water management semi-intensive fish farming should be encouraged.

MALERKOTLA
Case registered:
The local police arrested the owners of two video parlours here on Thursday, for showing a film without any copyright and commercial rights of the film.

PATIALA
Awarded:
The National Theatre Arts Society (NTAS) at Patiala has honoured members of the cast of their latest production, 'Salvaan; A Punjabi musical play written by Mr Ajmer Singh Aulakh and directed by Mr Pran Sabharwal for their successful performances.

PHILLAUR
Course:
A three-day course on "Juvenile Delinquency" was concluded here on Friday. Mr A.A. Siddiqui, Director, Punjab Police Academy, while addressing the police personnel emphasised the role of informal mechanism to check juvenile delinquency.

AMBALA
Remanded:
Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Railway Police, Mr Pishori Lal, was remanded in judicial custody by a local court here on Thursday. He was arrested on a complaint by Mr Sunny, a vendor at Ambala cantonment railway station, who alleged, that in November he was severely beaten up by Pishori Lal which resulted in injuries to his right his right arm.

FARIDABAD
Charas seized:
The police arrested Ravinder, alias Dabbu, near Hodal on Thursday on a charge of possessing charas.

FATEHABAD
Police-public meeting:
The Director-General of Police, Haryana, Mr S.K. Sethi, has exhorted policemen to be courteous towards the public and at the same time sought public cooperation in maintaining better ties between the police and the public. He was speaking at a police-public meeting organised by Fateh-Dhwaj, a local organisation, here on Friday. Earlier, the state police chief inaugurated two police assistance booths in the town.

PANIPAT
Cable operator beaten up:
The police here has registered a case against a cable operator Mahabir Prasad and his five employees for allegedly beating up Lovely Sharma, another cable operator. According to Mr Pratap Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Lovely Sharma has been admitted to a hospital.

SIRSA
Two held:
Mukhi Singh of Badagudha village and Kaka Singh of Mansa were arrested by the police in a criminal case on Friday and some stolen articles were recovered from their possession. According to the police, the articles had been stolen from the Agriculture Department office at Badagudha on the night of January 15.

Burn injuries: Santro (20), a married woman of Mangalia village received serious burn injuries at her house on Friday when she was working in kitchen. She was admitted to the local Civil Hospital. Her condition was reported to be serious.

Power shortage: Residents of this city and its surrounding areas are facing an acute power shortage and low voltage. They alleged that due to the indifferent attitude of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam authorities they had not been given regular supply and warned that if their problem was not solved they would be forced to launch an agitation.

Sentenced: The District and Sessions Judge, Nirmala Yadav, awarded the life imprisonment to Dhanpat, a resident of Rampura, for poisoning his wife to death. The Judge also imposed a fine of Rs 500.

SONEPAT
Trucks intercepted:
Six trucks carrying 110 cows, were intercepted on Friday by the police near Jagdishpur and Jhundpur villages along the Yamuna which were attempting to smuggle these from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh. The police also arrested 13 persons in this connection. A case under various sections of the Prevention of the Cows Slaughter Act has been registered.

YAMUNANAGAR
Agitation withdrawn:
The local Saraswati Sugar Mill Labour has withdrawn its nine-day agitation after a compromise was reached with the factory management. The agitation began on January 14 when some workers began a relay fast.

Arrested: The police arrested Sanjiv Kumar on Thursday for allegedly murdering Parvesh, a resident of Sasoli village near here. He was sent to police remand for five days.top


  Himachal Briefs
HAMIRPUR
Arrested:
The police arrested Bachitra Singh of Baturra village in the district on Saturday from the local bus stand. He had been absconding after allegedly killing his brother's wife on June 6 last year. A case under Section 302 of the IPC is pending against him.

Horticulture sub-station: A horticulture research sub-station will be set up in the district by the HP University of Horticulture and Forestry to promote horticulture crops in the region. This was stated by Horticulture Minister Narendra Bragta while addressing a district-level horticulture training camp for farmers at Kot village on Friday.

KANGRA
New branches:
Jammu and Kashmir Bank will open as many as 28 new branches in the country, including three in Himachal Pradesh, by the end of this year. The Chairman of the bank, Mr M.Y. Khan, said here on Friday that the bank's branches in Himachal would be opened at Shimla, Kangra and Manali.

NURPUR
Revenue records:
Dr Rajan Sushant, Revenue Minister, said here on Friday that the government had decided to computerise the revenue records up to the tehsil level. He said revenue sammelans were being organised at subdivision-level for seeking suggestions to bring modifications in the existing revenue acts and rules.
