AMRITSAR
Blood donation: A blood donation camp was organised at the local BBK DAV College for Women. It was inaugurated by Mrs Parminder Kaur, wife of the Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar. As many as 35 students donated blood.

Rotary club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Rotary Club: President — Mr Harnam Dass Arora; President-elect — Mr K.G. Sapra; Vice-President — Mr Sanjeev Sud; Secretary — Mr Surinder Singh; Joint Secretary — Col I.S. Parmar; and Finance Secretary — Mr Yash Pal Mahajan.

Boy dead: An 18-year-old boy, identified as Aarpee, was found hanged from a tree near the Construction Department building on the Guru Nanak Dev University campus here on Friday. The boy was the son of a university employee and was studying in B.A. (II) and doing the university computer course. The police is investigating.

JALANDHAR
Awarded: The Border Security Force, Punjab frontier headquarters, Doordarshan Kendra and Bharat Petroleum, members of the local Town Official Language Implementation Committee, have been awarded first, second and third prizes, respectively, for promoting Hindi as an official language. The awards were given at Agra recently by the Department of official Languages, Ministry of Home Affairs.

MOGA
Kerosene shortage:
An acute shortage of kerosene in this town for the past several days has caused inconvenience to the consumers. This has led to the commodity being sold on the black market at Rs 10 a litre. Consumers say that they never get kerosene at the fair price shops.

PATIALA
Essay competition:
The Academy of Sikh Religion and Culture organised an essay writing competition in which Harpreet Kaur of Government Victoria School (senior group) and Amanpreet Kaur of Sri Dasmesh School (junior group) won first prizes. Besides, 24 students were also given prizes, according to a press note of the academy here on Saturday.

Camp: The Dedicated Brothers group organised the 25th free distribution camp at Gurdwara Baba Kahan Singh here. The group also organised free cardigan distribution camp at Government High School, Gandhi Nagar, according to a press release of the group here on Saturday.

Demanded: The Tripuri Main Bazar Welfare Association urged the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, that the road from the RDA office to Water Tank, Tripuri, should be metalled immediately. In a statement here on Saturday, association General Secretary J.L. Verma alleged that many letters were written to the municipal authorities but nothing had been done to repair the road.

Career conference: A two-day career conference-cum-exhibition was organised jointly by the Deputy Director, Employment, and the NSS unit on the Punjabi University campus here. Prof B.S. Bhatia, Dean, Academic, Punjabi University, presided over the function. Experts from the different fields shared their values with students of the various departments of the university, according to a press note issued by the District Employment Officer here on Saturday. top

Contests: Kite flying best dressed male and female contest and a fancy dress competition for children marked the Basant Panchmi celebrations organised by the Chandigarh Club here on Sunday. Mr Ashok Jindal, Convener of the entertainment committee of the club, gave away the prizes.

Temple panel: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Administrative Committee of the Sector 43 Mata Shakumbri Devi Temple: President — Mr M.R. Saini; Vice-Presidents — Mr K.K.Garg; Mr Raj Rani Gandhi; Mrs Raj Arora and Mr J.N. Khullar and General Secretary — Mr P.D.Vashisht.

PANCHKULA
Medical camp: The local unit of the Senior Citizen's Council, in coordination with the local Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs, organised a medical check-up camp here on Sunday. As many as 400 persons were examined.

Workshop: The local unit of the Family Planning Association of India organised a workshop on Human values and the family for college students here on Saturday. Twentyfive students of the NSS unit of the local Government College participated.top

BHIWANI
Deputation: A deputation of the Haryana Government Lecturers Welfare Association under the leadership of Mr M.M. Sehgal met Mr Ram Bilas Sharma, Education Minister, Haryana, here on Saturday and presented to him a memorandum of their demands. The demands include grant of first-class status to lecturers and pay scales as announced by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development and recommended by the University Grants Commission.

KAITHAL
Speed post: The Department of Posts has started the Speed Post service in Kaithal town to provide better facilities to the people, Mr M.P. Gupta, Area Manager, said while addressing a meeting of businessmen, citizens and mediapersons here on Friday. People attending the meeting demanded an increase in the number of postmen to improve distribution of dak in the town.

Killed: Harjinder Singh of Jagdishpura village was killed in a road accident here on Friday evening. The victim was driving a scooter when he was knocked down and killed by a private bus opposite a filling station on the Ambala road here. The bus driver fled. A case has been registered.

KURUKSHETRA
President's picture: Mr Pawan Garg, President, District Congress Committee, in a statement released to the press here on Saturday condemned the Haryana Government for not publishing the picture of the President of India in the new year calendar. He said that last year the state government had published the Haryana calendar with the photographs of the President, the Governor of Haryana and the Chief Minister. But this time the picture of the Prime Minister had been published in place of the photograph of the President.

SHAHABAD
Tricycles distributed: Fourteen tricycles and one wheelchair were distributed among disabled persons of the Shahabad area at a camp organised by the Rotary Club here on Saturday. Mr Jatinder Kumar Rajpal, an industrialist of Karnal, was the chief guest at the function.

SIRSA
Sewerage problem: Residents of the local Agarsain colony complain of defective sewerage in the area. They allege that the authorities are silent over the problem. They threatened to launch an agitation in front of the Public Health Department if the problem was not solved.

Suicide: Sandeep Monga (25), a resident of Mandi Dabwali, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Saturday. According to sources, Sandeep had been facing an acute shortage of money.top



Himachal Briefs
BILASPUR
Bus service: Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda flagged off the Barmana-to-Delhi bus service of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation at Barmana, 18 km from here, on Friday. He said the bus would leave Barmana at 10.30 a.m. and start its return journey from Delhi at 10.45 p.m. Mr Nadda announced that a bus stand would be constructed at Barmana soon.

SOLAN
Convicted: The Judicial Magistrate, Mr Prem Pal Ranta, on Saturday awarded six months imprisonment to Rattan Singh, Manjeet Singh, Gurdarshan Singh and Surinder Singh, sons of Balwant Singh of Garkhal, for trespassing on the premises of house of Madan Gopal of the same village. The Judge also imposed a fine of Rs 500 to each of them.

UNA
Awards announced: Himutkarsh Parishad has announced the awards for national integration and the Himachal Shree awards for 1998. The awards will be presented by the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, on February 7.
