Cultural Scene

NSD studentspresent 'Yerma'
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH July 1 — 'Yerma' was presented by students from the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, in collaboration with Yavanika Theatre Group, Chandigarh, at Tagore Theatre here today. The play was set up in a contemporary and modern framework.

The play, originally written by Spanish playwright Fedrico Garcia Lorca, was translated and adapted in Hindi by Sewak Nayyar of the Yavanika theatre group. It was directed by Suveeran, a final-year student of the NSD, who has been a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Natak Akademi Award for directing 'Dr Faustus'.

'Yerma', whose heroine has so great a longing for a child that she strangles the husband who deprives her of one, does not remain only a woman obsessed with a frustrated passion for maternity but seems to rise above that. Played by Indu Verma, a first-year student of the NSD, Yerma becomes a symbol of zest and passion and all that a woman is capable of — loving her own self and her fervent belief in her desires and wishes.

The universalises the woman's tragedy. It displays a young outlook, which is both bold and spirited. But the scenes between the husband and wife sometimes seem too brash. Keeping in view the subject of the play and a violent ending, children should not have been allowed in the auditorium.

It was interesting to watch Dibyendu Bhattacharya, from the NSD repertory in the role of Joan, Yerma's husband, whose exaggerated body movements brought out the elemental lust present in a man. The entire play had a lot of stress on body movements, making the play more physical than symbolic. The one symbol that was present throughout the production was that of death, in the form of coffin or sounds of sobbing. Lights by Kuldeep and Jaspal helped heighten the intense scenes, though the music seemed jarring in certain scenes.

This production will also be staged on June 2 and 3 at the same venue. In tomorrow's production, Richa Nayyar, a first-year student of the NSD from Chandigarh, will enact the role of Yerma.

Corporation Beat

Mayor's plea turned down
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH July 1— The Chandigarh Administration has turned down the plea of the Mayor, Mr Kewal Krishan Addiwal, that the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) should not take major decisions and make payments since he was under transfer.

According to sources, the Administration has written back to the Mayor stating that it would not be possible to restrain the Commissioner, Mr Satish Gathwal, as he was well within his right to take decisions and make payments under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1996.

Mr Addiwal, in a letter, had urged the Administration to restrain the Commissioner from taking major decisions and make payments to various agencies since he had already been transferred to Delhi.

The Administration also clarified that according to rules an official could exercise his powers till he renounced his charge. " He has every right to make payments to various agencies as per norms and these payments cannot be stalled", the Administration is understood to have told the Mayor.

It may be recalled that the BJP-SAD alliance has sent an agenda under the short notice inquiries for the meeting held on June 30 on the issue. The meeting was adjourned to July 2 and the agenda could not be taken up.

The alliance has said that the act of the Mayor virtually "directing" the Commissioner not to function and the subsequent letter of the Administration has brought disgrace to the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh.
