Al Jamri jailed
DUBAI, July
7 (DPA) A Bahraini security court today sentenced
to 10-year jail term to the leading Shiite Muslim
dissident Sheikh Abdul Ameer Al Jamri, sources in Bahrain
said. The sources said on condition of anonymity that the
three judges presiding over the case also ordered Al
Jamri to pay a fine of more than $ 1.5 million.

(Togo), July 7 Sierra Leones warring sides
reached a peace deal today to end eight years of civil
war, after the feared rebel movement backed down on key
demands, rebel and UN officials said. The accord was to
be signed about mid day by Sierra Leones President
Ahmed Tejan Kabbah and Revolutionary United Front leader
Foday Sankoh, a UN mediator said, speaking on condition
of anonymity. The signing was to be at a summit of
regional leaders in Togos capital, Lome.

July 7 (PTI) A member of the CPI-MLs Bihar
state executive and an accused in January 1998 killing of
nine persons at Chauram village in extremist-hit
Jehanabad district Kamlesh Sharma today surrendered
before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (Jehanabad) Mr
K.M.M. Quereshi, his lawyer said.

KUWAIT,
July 7 (DPA) Kuwaits ruler Sheikh Jaber
Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah today reappointed Crown Prince Sheikh
Saad Abdullah Al-Sabah as Prime Minister and directed him
by decree to form a new government. The Kuwait news
agency and state-run media announced the reappointment.

July 7 (DPA) A massive meteor or fireball swept
across northern New Zealand this afternoon, crashing
North of Napier city on the east coast of North island,
according to local reports.
5 hacked to
death

July 7 (PTI) Five persons were hacked to death by
a group of eight here early today, to avenge an
eve-teasing incident. The police said a provision store
owner had made comments against some girls passing by his
store last evening and two local residents took objection
to the shop owners misbehaviour which led to a
brawl.
Gold touches 20-year low
LONDON,
July 7 (PTI) International gold prices today
plummeted to a 20-year low following sale of 25 tonnes of
the yellow metal by Britain on Monday, a move condemned
by major gold producers worldwide. It is, however,
expected to boost sales in Asian countries, specially
India, where buyers are likely to cash in on the slump
and buy gold at lower prices, the World Gold Council
(WGC) said.

MANDI, July 7 The raising day of the Beas
Sutlej Link project was celebrated today at the dam site
at Pandoh. A large number of engineers and workers
converged to the dam site to pay glowing tributes to the
engineers and workers who died on duty. Wreathes were
placed on the Martyrs Memorial built on the dam. As many
as 212 engineers and workers died during the construction
of one of the worlds largest hydel power projects.
The BSL project was dedicated to the nation on July 7,
1977. In a message, Maj Gen R.R. Oberoi, Chairman, BBMB,
appreciated the gesture of the BSL family which had
contributed Rs 3 lakh to the National Defence Fund for
the rehabilitation of the families of the war heroes.

NEW DELHI,
July 7 (UNI) The scheduled for the Lok Sabha
elections is expected to be announced by the middle of
this month by the Election Commission which has recently
completed a round of talks with both the representatives
of national political parties and the Home Ministry.
Sources said the commission is considering a proposal to
hold the elections in phases during the third week of
September.

streets of Uzice last night. The protest organised by an
opposition alliance used the theme "now or
never" to call for Mr Milosevics ouster and a
growth of democratic institutions.

members to the Rajya Sabha on July 26 from Goa, Gujarat
and West Bengal commenced today with the issue of
notifications. The biennial elections have been caused
due to the expiry of the terms of the members before
August 18. Nominations would be accepted till July 14.
Scrutiny will be done the next day and the last date for
withdrawal of candidature is July 17.

LPG for cars

July 7 (PTI) The Centre has cleared the proposal
to permit the use of LPG for scooters and cars in order
to check environmental pollution, Union Minister of State
for Petroleum and Natural Gas Santosh Kumar Gangwar said
today. The legislation to give effect to this would be
brought in the new Lok Sabha, the minister told newsmen
after laying a foundation stone for the Rs 34.61-crore
LPG bottling plant of the IOC at Ghattiya village, 21 km
from here.

Minister Bill Skate today announced his resignation, just
hours after triggering an international furore by
recognising Taiwan and days before a parliamentary vote
that almost certainly would have unseated him. Bill (46),
has been dogged by accusations of corruption and links to
Papua New Guinea street gangs known as
"rascals". He said he step down in an effort to
restore political stability and business confidence.
