FARIDABAD, July 7 — Raghbir Singh, stated to be an alcoholic, allegedly killed his wife, Sunita, by burning at their residence in Jeewan Nagar in Old Faridabad yesterday.

More funds pour in for martyrs' kin

ROHTAK, July 7 — The people of Ladhaut village in Rohtak block have set a glowing example of patriotism by donating their pension for last month to the Shaheed Pariwar Rahat Kosh.

According to information, 234 persons of the village donated an amount of Rs 23,400 in the form of their one-month pension for old age, disability or widowhood.

District police personnel have donated their one-day salary amounting to Rs 2,69,150 for the Kargil martyrs.

The employees of the Dairy Vikas Sangh deposited an amount of Rs 1,76,000 to the Shaheed Rahat Kosh, while the staff of the district Health Department contributed Rs 1,61,000. The employees of the municipal council donated their one-day salary amounting to Rs 90,000 and the members of the Zila Van Karamchari Sangh also deposited their one-day salary to the kosh.

The teaching staff of the local All-India Jat Heroes Memorial College contributed their three days' salary amounting to Rs 1 lakh. Dr I.S. Dalal, Principal of the college, announced that dependents of the martyrs would be imparted education free of cost in the college.

The District Pension Association contributed Rs 15,443 and the owners of nine gas agencies in the town donated Rs 18,900 to the rahat kosh.

Besides, the district administration has announced a compensation of Rs 25,000 to each soldier of the district injured in the operations at Kargil.

Mr Arun Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, said four soldiers of the district had laid down their lives and four soldiers were injured during the military operations so far. The injured soldiers of this district are Havaldar Pratap Singh (Kharawar), Jawan Rajesh Hooda (Rurki), Naik Jagat Singh (Madina) and Jawan Ashok Kumar (Bhalaut).

PANIPAT: The staff of the Office of the General Manager, Haryana Roadways Depot here, have decided to donate their one-day salary towards the Haryana Chief Minister's War Heroes Fund.

According to the Deputy General Manager, Panipat Telecom area, Mr S.P. Singh, telecom employees have donated Rs 26445 towards the Martyrs Relief Fund.

The other departments which have contributed one-day salary included the Haryana Tourism Corporation, Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam, District Red Cross Society and Public Relations.Top



 

Academy to bring out martyrs’ tales in Urdu

CHANDIGARH, July 7 — The Haryana Urdu Academy will bring out a publication in Urdu for highlighting the chivalrous tales of martyrs of Haryana who had laid down their lives while fighting Pakistani infiltrators in the Kargil sector for protecting national unity and integrity.

This information was given at the inaugural function of an Urdu teaching centre for employees held at Haryana Raj Bhavan here today.

The Governor, who inaugurated the centre is himself learning Urdu. He complimented the Academy on taking effective steps to popularise the Urdu language among different sections of society, especially government officials by introducing Urdu teaching centres at various places of the state.

The Governor urged all the employees to start learning the language at the Urdu teaching centres started by the Academy in Haryana.

Mr K.L. Zakir, secretary of the Academy, informed that Urdu would be taught for one hour daily from 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. to officials of Haryana Raj Bhavan. The Academy would also porvide Urdu primers and stationery to the learners free of cost. Top



 

Unclaimed vehicles

FARIDABAD, July 7 — A large number of vehicles believed to have been stolen or abandoned after committing crimes are lying unclaimed for past several years at the Police Lines here.

Stating this here yesterday, a police spokesman said it seemed the vehicles had been stolen from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Some of them had been impounded by the police while smuggling liquor during the days of prohibition in Haryana.

The vehicles which are lying at the Police Lines included 55 Maruti cars, five Maruti vans, 35 Yamaha, 29 Rajdoot, one Suzuki, eight Hero Honda, two Bullet, six Yezdi and one Kawasaki motor cycles, 10 LML Vespa, 89 Bajaj Chetak and 12 Priya scooters, two trucks, two jeeps, one auto rickshaw, two Tata Sumo cars and nine mopeds.

The spokesman said the vehicles would be auctioned if they were not claimed within three months.Top



 

Hathnikund Barrage open on July 9

YAMUNANAGAR, July 7 — Hathnikund Barrage will be dedicated to the people of the state on July 9, by the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal.

Mr R K Ailawadhi, Chief Engineer, Irrigation Department, Haryana, who has been monitoring the construction of the barrage, informed this reporter on telephone here today that due to the commitment of the Chief Minister the project was completed ahead of the schedule. He further added that the work was undertaken by the Mumbai-based Hindustan Construction Co. Ltd.

He said the project had been aided by the World Bank under the Haryana State Water Resources Consolidated Project. He further said with the completion of the Barrage, the 125-year-old Tajewala Headworks would be replaced. He added that the barrage had been designed to discharge 7.78 lakh cusecs of water to avoid floods.

The Chief Engineer further said the state would get an extra discharge of 4,000 cusecs from this barrage during the monsoons. He said Uttar Pradesh would get 7,750 cusecs and Haryana 20,000 cusecs. He stated that the link channel work had been undertaken by the Larson and Toubro company and the earth work of the entire canal had also been completed. The barrage will be converted into a tourist spot later on.

He further said Mr Harsh Kumar, Irrigation Minister, Haryana, will preside over the function.Top



 

Savings scheme draw held at Faridabad

FARIDABAD, July 7 (UNI) — The third and final draw of the Haryana Government's golden jubilee small savings prizes scheme (revised) 1998-99 was held under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Charan Dass Shorewala here today.

Mr Shorewala said the state government got 75 per cent money so invested as long-term loan from the Union Government for implementing development projects in the state which was returnable in 25 years.

The minister said in view of success in the previous years' investments a target for small savings investment during the current financial year had been fixed at Rs 1,040 crore as the state had achieved Rs 993.75 crore investment during 1998-99 against a target of Rs 840 crore.

The first prize of half a kg of gold was won by coupon No C-652975 of Panchkula and two second prizes of a 800 cc Maruti car each were won by coupon No D-507005 (Karnal) and coupon No D-315150 (Kaithal).

The third prize consisting of two tractors was won by coupon No C-703660 (Sirsa) and coupon No A-721986 (Faridabad). The fourth prize of five Kinetic Hondas has been won by coupon No D-300979 (Kaithal), D-784829 (Sonepat), D-401704 (Karnal), A-628231 (Faridabad) and A-312955 (Jind).

As many as 3,000 prizes were declared in this draw. The fifth prize consists of 20 Luna Super mopeds, sixth 20 colour TVs (14), seventh 20 two-in-ones, eighth 20 geysers of 25 litres capacity, ninth prize 110 National electric cookers, 10th prize of 200 VIP briefcases, 11th of 200 ceiling fans, 12th of 200 polyfill bedcover sets, 13th of 200 wristwatches, 14th of 1000 lunch boxes and 15th of 1,000 vacuum flasks of two litres capacity each.Top



 

Additional charge for Chander Singh

CHANDIGARH, July 7 — The Haryana Government has given additional charge of Principal, Revenue Training College, Ambala, to Mr Chander Singh, Commissioner and Secretary to the Irrigation department and Commission of Ambala division, vice Mr S.C. Chaudhary.

Earlier, Mr Chaudhary had been posted as Principal Revenue Training College. However, he had questioned his transfer before the Central Administrative Tribunal on the ground that this post was below his status and responsibility as a Commissioner.

He had also levelled charges against the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary.Top


 

Alcoholic kills wife

FARIDABAD, July 7 — Raghbir Singh, stated to be an alcoholic, allegedly killed his wife, Sunita, by burning at their residence in Jeewan Nagar in Old Faridabad yesterday.

The couple used to indulge in heated exchanges daily due to the drinking habits of Raghbir Singh. When he came home after consuming liquor on Monday night, Raghbir Singh in a fit of rage set her on fire and escaped.

Hearing cries of help the neighbours took her to the Civil Hospital. She was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where she died last night.

Raghbir Singh has been arrested. In another incident Soni who ran away after stealing a bicycle was drowned in a swamp in Sanjay Colony. Reports said as he escaped after committing the crime, he was chased by the people. In order to avoid being caught he jumped into the swamp never to come out alive. The fire brigade took out his body after 30 hours of efforts.Top
