Rotary Club:

FAZILKA
Electrocuted: Sita Ram (60)of Ladhuwala village, 40 km from here, was electrocuted when an electric poll fell on him while he was going to his fields. He died on the spot.

FARIDKOT
Protest rally:
Many social organisations led by the district unit of the BJP held a rally here on Wednesday to protest against the Pakistan-backed intrusion in Kargil and other sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. The rally was addressed by Mr Wajir Chand Gupta, President of the district unit of the BJP.

GURDASPUR
Rotary Club:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Rotary Club: President — Mr Naresh Sharad; Vice-Presidents — Mr Deepak Kapila and Mr Naveen Duggal; Secretary — Dr Rana Verma and Treasurer — Mr Bharat Bhushan Mahajan.
Racket busted: The police has busted a racket in which guides and books of the Punjab School Education Board supplied by the government to the schools for free of cost distribution among children of weaker sections of society did not reach them. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, Davinder Kumar, a resident of Sujanpur, was arrested on Tuesday and 100 such books were recovered from him. The Principal and a teacher of a high school, Sujanpur, had reportedly absconded

KURUKSHETRA
Fellowship awarded:
Dr Brajesh Sawhney, a lecturer in the Department of English, Kurukshetra University, has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Post Doctoral Fellowship for 1999-2000. He is among the five Indian scholars to win the fellowship.

MALERKOTLA
Amnesty scheme:
The District Transport Officer, Mr Deepak Raj Garg, has launched an amnesty scheme for the clearance of tax arrears to be paid by the owners of heavy vehicles in the district. Briefing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Mr Garg said the defaulters would be exempted from penalty for the delay in payment of taxes for three months.

Medical panel:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Indian Medical Association: President — Dr G.L. Kukreja; Vice-President — Dr S.K. Mahajan; General Secretary — Dr K.D. Singh; and Treasurer — Dr Arvind Kalra.

PATIALA
Gas agency:
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr Sanjeev Gupta, on Tuesday inaugurated a gas agency at the Police Lines here which, besides catering to police personnel, will also be open for Home Guard volunteers and special police officers.

TARN TARAN
Two killed:
Two persons have been killed in two different accidents in the area on Monday. They have been identified as Amrik Singh (30) of Sheikh village, who was a Head Constable in the traffic police, Kapurthala district, and Joginder Singh (32) of Usman village, an employee of an intelligence agency. Cases have been registered under Sections 279, 304-A and 427, IPC.
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the managing committee of the newly established Mata Sahib Kaur Girls College, Fatehabad: President — Mr Inderjit Singh; Senior Vice-President — Mr Jasbir Singh; Vice-President — Mr Baldev Singh; General Secretary — Mr Amar Singh; and Assistant Secretary - Mr Harbhajan Singh.

Exhibition: A collection of Indian heritage weaves by Delhi-based Shashiv Chandran will be displayed at Hotel Aroma during a two-day exhibition, starting on Friday. Prints from bagh, Bagru and Kaa dera, weaves from Maheshwar, Managalagiri and Kanchipuram, traditional dupattas and exquisite handloom sarees will be on display.
Refresher course: The Punjab University will organise a refresher course in physics for university and college teachers from July 9 to August 5. The course will be inaugurated by Prof I.B.M. Passi, DUI.

PANCHKULA
Donated:
The teachers, administrative staff and class IV employees of government degree college on Wednesday donated Rs 500, Rs 300 and Rs 200 each, respectively, for the Kargil soldiers. Mr V.K. Pandit, Principal, expressed sympathy and support to the bereaved families of Kargil martyrs.
Course introduced: The Government degree college has introduced a B.Sc. course in home science from the current academic session. A course in industrial chemistry has been added to the science stream.

BHIWANI
Camp:
A fruit and vegetable preservation training camp was organised on Tuesday at the local Krishi Gyan Kendra wherein many women were imparted training in the preservation of fruits and vegetables.
Taken charge:
Mr Mani Ram Sharma, took the charge of officiating Chairman of the Haryana School Education Board from Tuesday. The post was vacant after a BJP MLA, Mr Ramesh Kashyap, resigned on June 18.

FARIDABAD
Girl missing:
Kanhaya Lal, a middle-aged person, here has been running from pillar to post for the recovery of his young daughter who has been missing since last month. According to him, he has also lodged a report with the police naming a person who he alleged has kidnapped his daughter.

KURUKSHETRA
Selected:
Ms Nidhi Kapoor of Kurukshetra University will participate in the "Ship for the World Youth Programme-99" to be held in Japan from August 31 to October 28. She is the only girl from Northern India to join the Indian contingent of 13 youth selected for the programme.

REWARI
Water supply scheme:
Several villages in the district have been facing an acute drinking water problem for the past two weeks as the Berwal water supply scheme has collapsed. The Deputy Commissioner has directed the Public Health authorities to repair it.

ROHTAK
Parents roughed up:
Resentment prevails among residents here over the roughing up of parents of students studying at Shri Baba Mastnath Public School allegedly at the behest of school authorities here on Monday. The agitated parents on Tuesday took out a march.

SIRSA
Arrest sought:
Members of the Arhtiya Association, here, and representatives of various other traders’ associations gave a charter of demands to Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder of Rajkumar, alias Rajiv (18), an accountant in the new Anaj Mandi, who was shot dead on July 5, last.
Custodial death: The Subdivisional Magistrate, Mandi Dabwali, has been ordered to investigate the custodial death of Darshan Singh alias Kala (18) of Mandi Kalanwali who died at Civil Hospital, here, on Tuesday where he was admitted by the police for treatment of chest pain.
Protest meeting: Members of the Sarv Karamchari Sangh and Karamchari Mahasangh participated in a protest meeting held here on Wednesday. They criticised the state government for not implementing their demands.
Sentenced: The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sirsa, sentenced Gurdeep Singh, alias Deepa, a Jat Sikh of Ganga village in this district, on Tuesday to seven years’ imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000 in a case of attempt to murder.

SONEPAT
Dharna held:
A large number of farmers, affiliated to the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) took out a procession here on Tuesday in support of their demands. They staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
Deputy Commissioner: Mr Anil Kumar took charge as the Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday in place of Mr P.K. Mahapatra, who has been transferred to Chandigarh as Director, Supplies and Disposal.

BILASPUR
Seminar:
A seminar on "Steps for Improvement in Educational Atmosphere" in schools by the district unit of the Himachal Pradesh State Teachers Union was held here on Monday. The district President, Mr Roshan Lal Sharma, presided. It was inaugurated by Mr Sukhram Azad, a retired headmaster.

NURPUR
Rig machines:
The Himachal Pradesh Irrigation-cum-Public Health Department Minister, Mr Ramesh Choudhary, while talking to mediapersons at Chuwari, 24 km from here, said on Monday that the IPH Department had earmarked Rs 1 crore to purchase three Rig machines meant for each zone of the department.
