Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, July 9 — The Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA), whose Chairman is the well-known theatre and television personality, G.S. Chani, has prepared a calendar of events and workshops for the year. It includes theatre workshops and interactive programmes.

“Most of our programmes emphasise on interaction, because theatre for me does not just mean a production but a whole process”, said Chani.

The calendar of events of the Chandigarh SNA, after its council is formed sometime this week, would be kicked off with an ‘open forum’, a participatory session with the citizens of the city, on July 17 at Chandigarh Museum.

A six-day puppet theatre workshop with Delhi-based puppeteer Varun Narayan is slated for July 21 in Karuna Sadan Building, Sector 11.

Also on the cards is a dance and yoga workshop with renowned bharatnatyam dancer Navtej Singh, starting on July 31. This week-long workshop would be aimed at building body movements, alignments and strengths.

Commenting on the annual grant of Rs 1.2 lakh that each of the Chandigarh akademis gets every year, Chani said that the SNA had also approached the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala, for funds. The akademi is also planning to take out brochures to generate its own funds.

M.K. Raina would hold a 10-day workshop on theatre starting on October 2. In December, the akademi plans to invite Bansi Kaul from Delhi, belonging to the theatre group ‘Vidushak”, who would hold a five-day workshop on the various movements and languages of the clown. This workshop would be held from December 15 to 30. Other projects in the pipeline include weekly documentary shows for the general public, a story telling session, a ‘jane-anjane’ session in which women picked up from the various neighbourhoods of the city would display their skills in front of an audience. The akademi also plans to invite the likes of Shabana Azami and Shubha Mudgal to interact with the city audience.

“I firmly believe that theatre and the arts are not only the prerogative of the artistes, but a cleansing and a purifying process. A process which all people need to go through”, said Chani. The three akademis are looking for some office space. The Chandigarh Administration may give them space in the Sector 34 Central State Library.Back

Consumer Courts
Cost of shoes to be refunded
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, July 9 — The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-II has directed the Director, Woodland Shoes, New Delhi, to refund Rs 600 as the price of the shoes along with interest at the rate of 12 per cent from the date of purchase. A cost of Rs 250 has also been imposed for causing harassment.

The complainant, Mr Amarjit Singh, had alleged that he had purchased a pair of `Woodland' shoes from the `sale' at Panchayat Bhavan, Sector 18, on June 7, 1997, for Rs 600. But on reaching home he found that the colour of the upper of the right foot of the shoes was different from that of the left foot. He further alleged that when he brought the defect to the notice of the shopkeeper and asked for replacement, the opposite party did not have another pair of similar shoes. And when he later went to claim the refund of the price, he was told that the opposite party who had come to Chandigarh for organising the sale had already left for Delhi, where the company is situated. The complainant claimed the refund of the price along with damages for harassment.

On being served notice, since no one from the company filed a reply, and hence it was proceeded ex-parte.

After going through the records, the Forum bench, comprising its President, Mr R.P Bajaj, and members, Mr H.S Walia and Mrs Kamlesh Gupta, held that “it is a clear case of sale of defective shoes to the complainant and non-replacement of defective shoes or refunding the price amounts to grave deficiency on its part.''

In another similar case, the Forum directed Bata Shoe Store, Sector 22 D, to refund the price of the shoe — Rs 99.95 — to the complainant along with costs of Rs 250.

The complainant, Mr Satinder Mohan, had alleged that he had purchased a pair of shoes from M/s Bata Shoe Store, Sector 22 D, for Rs 99.95. However, within a day of its purchase it got torn. When the shopkeeper neither removed the fault nor refund the amount, the complainant claimed compensation for harassment.

As no one appeared on behalf of the shopkeeper after notice was issued, it was proceeded ex-parte. The Forum bench comprising its President, Mr R.P Bajaj, and member, Mrs Kamlesh Gupta, after going through the records inferred that the pair of shoes sold was defective as it got torn soon after the purchase.

Gas dealer fined

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-II has imposed a cost of Rs 500 on a gas dealer for harassing a consumer on account of release of gas connection.

In his complaint, Mr Suresh Pal had alleged that he had booked a gas connection with a Mani Majra gas agency when he was staying in New Indira Colony, Mani Majra, and that later he shifted his residence to Sector 26. On the maturity of connection, the dealer insisted upon the purchase of a gas stove before the release of gas connection.

In its reply, the representative of the gas agency contended that it had never insisted upon the purchase of gas stove. Moreover, since the complainant had shifted his residence to Sector 26 , he did not fall under the jurisdiction of the agency.

The Forum bench comprising its President, Mr R.P Bajaj, and member, Mrs Kamlesh Gupta, observed that during the pendency of the case, the gas connection was released to the complainant He was also issued the DBC and the transfer voucher to enable him to get the gas connection from the agency of Sector 26. Hence, the grievance of the complainant stands redressed.

Cost of sari

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum -II has directed a dry cleaner to pay a consumer a consolidated sum of Rs 1,500 towards the cost of a sari and harassment.

In her complaint, Mrs Geethanjali Nair, has stated that she had given her sari for dry cleaning to Dashmesh Dry Cleaners, Sector 32 D, on July 3, 1998. However, at the time of taking the delivery on July 7, 1998, she found that the sari had been damaged. She further alleged that some colour had spread on it and it was torn at few other places, which had been darned. Sine the owner of the shop was not available, the employees refused to redress the grievance. Despite repeated visits, she was neither able to get the sari replaced nor get any compensation.

The dry cleaner in his reply contended that the sari was already having a blot and the complainant was informed that the detergent which would be used to remove the blot could create perforations and deteriorate the condition of the sari. However, it was with the consent of the complainant that the opposite party tried to remove the blot, the perforations appeared and the sari was got darned.

The Forum bench comprising its President, Mr R.P Bajaj, and members, Mr H.S Walia and Mrs Kamlesh Gupta, held the dry cleaner guilty of deficiency in service since the sari had been damaged in the process of dry cleaning. They further observed that the dry cleaner had failed to substantiate that perforation would occur by the use of detergent for removal of blot, since there was no perforation around the place of the blot. Moreover, the black colour of the sari had spread on the remaining portion. It could not be accepted that the complainant had agreed to accept these damages to the sari.

While awarding costs, the Forum assessed the value of the sari at Rs 1,000 since it was purchased in November, 1996, and was being dry cleaned the second time, thus indicating that it had been used at a few occasions before. They further directed the dry cleaner to pay Rs 500 as compensation for harassment and costs of the case. Back
