Sensex zooms up
MUMBAI, July 12 (PTI) — Equities zoomed up with several cyclical stocks stuck at 8 per cent upper limit, lifting the sensex by a whopping 223 points today on the opening day of the new account on the stock market as operators, buoyed by the news of a Kargil settlement, rushed to make heavy commitments. Operators made all-round brisk buying with comparatively huge gap in opening quotes. The considerable short positions and no-delivery period in many scrips provided them greener pastures for their speculative activities.

Lankan soldiers
COLOMBO, July 12 (PTI) — Tamil Tiger rebels killed seven Sri Lankan soldiers in an ambush in the North-East of the country today, defence officials said. They said the LTTE guerrillas opened fire on the troops engaged in a search operation at Kokkuthuduvai village in Mullaitivu district. Meanwhile, two LTTE men were shot dead by the army in the Weli Oya sector in the eastern province. Another rebel was killed in the Jaffna peninsula, they added.

T-90 tanks
MOSCOW, July 12 (AP) — In a rare piece of good news, Russia’s cash-strapped army will get 30 T-90 tanks in 1999 -its first new tanks in years, according to news reports today. Col-Gen Sergei Mayev, chief of the Armoured Department of Russia’s Defence Ministry, said the first batch of tanks was almost complete, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.

6 shops gutted
NEW DELHI, July 12 (PTI) — Six shops were gutted in a busy market place in the walled city here early today, the fire brigade said. The fire broke out around 2.15 a.m. in Meena Bazar area near Jama Masjid and as many as 25 fire engines were pressed into service, they said.
