Arrested:
The SP, Vigilance Bureau, Mr R.K Sharma, in a press note issued here on Monday said a JE Balbir Singh posted at Tarn Taran was arrested for taking a bribe of Rs 800 from Sukhdev Singh. A police party headed by DSP Sawinder Singh conducted a raid at the office of the JE and caught him red-handed with the money. A case under Section 7.13(2) Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, has been registered.

BARNALA
Threatened:
Two of the three accused who robbed a trader's wife of gold ornaments worth Rs 50,000 near local Gokul market on Saturday, on Monday again came to the trader's house and threatened his wife Seema with dire consequences if she identified the culprits.

FARIDKOT
Red Cross society:
The local District Red Cross Society has achieved the top position under the Handicapped Welfare Scheme for the year 1998-99 in the state. Raja Narinder Singh, Minister for Public Health and Civil Aviation, honoured the society with a cash reward of Rs 25,000 at a state-level function held at Nabha last week. He also honoured Mr Balwinder Halli and Mr Ram Parkash Shastri, two social workers of the society, with state awards.

GURDASPUR
Arrested :
The local police has arrested a gang of women involved in stealing cloth from shops at crowded places. Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, said here on Tuesday that four members of the gang, Kishno and Gurmeet Kaur of Paniar village, 8 km from here, and Kamla, alias Billi, and Shakuntala, residents of Joura Chhattran village, 5 km from here, had been arrested and a large quantity of cloth was recovered from their possession.

MOGA
Urged:
Residents of the town on Tuesday urged the Punjab Government to make immediate arrangements for the supply of wheat flour to them through government fair price shops in view of the high rates of the commodity in the open market. They also condemned the Civil Supplies Department for failing to check the large scale black-marketing in kerosene. They accused some owners of government fair price shops who they alleged openly sold items in the black market. They demanded an inquiry into and the matter.

Dead telephones: Almost all 29 telephones out of the 30 installed in Mahesar village under Ghalkalan police station in this district have not been functioning for the past several months. Stating this here on Tuesday, former President of Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Kuldip Singh Sandhu said village subscribers had repeatedly asked the Telecommunication Department to repair their phones but to no avail.

PHAGWARA
Urged:
The state unit of the Indian Medical Association on Monday urged that population control programme should be made a people's movement involving masses, NGOs and religious leaders in planning and implementing various projects. Dr Raman Aggarwal, Honorary Secretary, IMA, Punjab, said the IMA had placed the population control programme at the highest priority in its national agenda.

SAMRALA
Arrested :
The police here has arrested a gang of cow slaughterers who used to transport cows illegally from the state to UP and other parts of the country. While talking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, Mr R.L. Bhagat, SSP, Khanna, said during a special drive launched in the district to nab the anti-social elements, the police stopped a truck and on search 14 oxens were discovered. During interrogation, Mohamad Shahid, a cow trader, revealed that he was taking the oxen to a slaughterhouse in UP. The police has registered a case against him and the driver of the truck, and arrested them.

Abduction: The local police has arrested Gurdip Singh, alias Kala, along with a minor girl of Dhilwan village. According to Mr Ashish Kapoor, SHO, the man lured the girl, belonging to his village, by promising to take her to hill stations and religious places. Mr G.S.Sidhu, DSP, said the girl was restored to her parents after conducting a medical examination.top

Blood camp: The Shruti Memorial Blood Donors Council has decided to dedicate its third blood donation camp to the Kargil heroes. The camp will be held on Thursday at the Sector 17 Bridge Market. Mr Satya Pal Jain, former MP, will present mementoes to the blood donors.

Expedition: An expedition organised by the Chandigarh Adventure Association was flagged off on Tuesday by Dr D.P. Mehta, Medical Superintendent, from the premises of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The members of the team, under the leadership of Mr Raj Kumar, donated blood for Kargil soldiers before setting out for the expedition.

Nominated: Mr Keso Ram Gupta, President of the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown, has been nominated Assistant District Governor, Zone II, RI District-3080, for the Rotary year 1999-2000.

Competition: a two-day competitive event, 'Kros-Fire-99', will be organised for high school students by Kabir's Roll of Old Students (KROS) on July 29 and 30. According to Mr Pankaj Chandgothia, senior students from ten leading schools in the city will compete.

Blood donation: To express solidarity with Indian soldiers, a blood donation camp will be held on Wednesday from 9 a.m. near the Sector 17 Plaza. It will be organised by Lions Club of Chandigarh, Traders Association of Sector 17 and UT Red Cross Society.

Bereaved: Mr Dina Nath, father of Mr Onkar Chand, Secretary, Servants of the People's Society, Lajpat Rai Bhavan, died here on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 97. He leaves behind three sons and four daughters. He was cremated at 4 p.m.

PANCHKULA
Resented: The Private House Owners Welfare Association, sector 11, on Tuesday resented the inconvenience caused to the public due to the alleged poor services provided by Haryana roadways. Mr Sunil Jain, general secretary of the association, urged the department concerned to increase the number of buses and reschedule timings.

BHIWANI
Competition:
The Zila Bal Kalyan Parishad will organise a national painting competition on July 15 in the compound of Bal Bhavan here, Mr K.S Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, Bhiwani, will inaugurate. A Zila Kalyan Adhikari, Mr Gulshan Kumar, said three categories would be of normal children between age 5 to 8, between 9 to 12 and between 13 years to 16 years. Besides these there would be two categories of handicapped children between 5 years to 10 years and between 11 years to 18 years.

Camps: Mr K.S Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, said here on Monday that Bhiwani Rehabilitation Centre's two mobile teams would visit various villages in the district to identify the handicapped persons and to chalk out a plan for their rehabilitation. He said that these camps would be held at Baliali on July 15, Sui on July 16, Talu on July 29, and Mundhal Khurd on July 31.

HAUTA scales:
A delegation of the Haryana Agricultural University Teachers' Association the Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Vinod Marya, and brought to his notice the undue delay in implementation of the revised pay scales of the HAU teachers and scientists. It was due to the delay in release of the matching grant by the government, the delegation said. The minister reportedly assured the delegation that he would take up the issue with the finance department.

Criticised: The President of the Haryana Beopar Mandal, Mr Bajrang Das Garg, has criticised the government for its failure to provide round-the-clock power in the state. Mr Garg claimed the supply of electricity had come down after June 30 and the industrial units in the state were facing closure. The beopar mandal president also alleged harassment to the traders by sales tax officials.

REWARI
No drinking water:
Residents of Goliaka village, 10 km from here, have been facing an acute shortage of drinking water for the past about six months on account of the failure of the Berwal Water Supply Scheme. The village Sarpanch, Mr Sheochand Yadav, said their repeated requests made to the public health authorities to start operations of two newly sunk tubewells at Badhrana village fallen on deaf ears. He said if the authorities failed to do the needful they would be compelled to resort to an indefinite fast.

SIRSA
Suicide:
A married woman, Chhindo (22), committed suicide by consuming a poisonous spray. According to sources, she lived in Ward No 7 of Rania and was married to Balvinder one-and-a-half years ago. She has been reported to be suffering from psychosis even before her marriage. She was alone in the house on Sunday when she consumed the spray. She died when she was being shifted from the Civil Hospital, Rania, to Sirsa.

Body recovered : The local police recovered an unidentified body of a middle-aged male from the local bus stand on Monday. According to the postmortem report, the cause of the death was stated to be consumption of a poisonous substance. The body was handed over to the local Municipal Council for cremation. The matter was being investigated.

Yoga camp: A 10 days' yoga camp was organised for the inmates of the local District Jail under the supervision of Mr Davinder Singh. The camp concluded on Monday. Mr Zile Singh Kundu, Superintendent of the jail, said here on Tuesday that about 500 inmates benefited from the camp.   

Died: Bhoop Singh (40), a tubewell mechanic, and Sube Singh (19), a farmer of Rampura village, in the district, died in the fields on Monday while repairing a tubewell. According to sources, Bhoop Singh died when he entered the well of the tubewell due to the emission of a poisonous gas. Sube Singh also entered after him and died.

Criminal case : Mr Ishwar Dutt, the local Judicial Magistrate (First Class), in a criminal case , awarded two years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,100 each on Lila Singh and Nachiter Singh of Jhorar Roni village in the district on Monday. The prosecution alleged that the accused assaulted Mr Kaur Singh of the village with sharp-edged weapons on August 25,1991. A criminal case has been registered at the Badagudha police station. The cause of the assault was old enmity.

False report: Mr B.S. Sandhu, Senior Superintendent of Police, here, said on Tuesday that a news report published in a section of the press that Rs 20,000 were snatched by some unidentified persons from Hari Chand and Harnam, near the local Barnala road, was wrong. He said a bag containing the money was lost by the two men, who had consumed liquor, somewhere on the way to the Barnala road. A criminal case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered.

SONEPAT
Killed:
Two persons going on a motor cycle were killed on the spot when they were hit by a Haryana Roadways bus of Faridabad depot on the G.T Road near Ganaur Chowk, about 20 km from here on Sunday. A case against the bus driver has been registered.

Suicide: Rakesh (20) committed suicide by swallowing poison in his house at Bayyanpur village about 3 km from here on Sunday. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. A family quarrel is said to be the reason behind the incident.

Group clash: One person was killed and others sustained injuries in a clash between two rival groups at Gumar village about 15 km from here on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Ram Phal. However, the cause of the clash was not immediately known. The police has registered a case.

Killed: One person was killed on the spot when he was hit by an unknown vehicle on the GT Road near Kundli village about 25 km from here on Saturday. The victim was identified as Siri Krishan (38) of Nathupur village. The police has registered a case.

Electrocuted: Satbir (30) was electrocuted in his house in the Ram Nagar area here on Saturday. The victim died when he came in contact with an electric motor in his house which was under construction. The police has sent the body for the post-mortem examination.

Burnt to death: Rohtas (20) was burnt to death in his house at Kundli village about 25 km from here on Saturday. The police believe it to be a case of suicide.

Suicide: A young girl Neeta committed suicide by consuming poison at her house in the old House Board Colony of this city on Saturday. A family quarrel is said to be the reason behind the suicide.

Body found: The Railway Police has found the body of a housewife Sumitra (30), lying on the railway track and sent it for the post-mortem examination. It is stated that she was crossing the railway track when she was hit by a train. The accident occurred at the Ganaur railway station 16 km from here on Saturday.top

All key posts relating to the development activities in the Nurpur Development Block have been lying vacant since long causing hardship to panchayat members. According to the information, posts of the Block Development Officer and Superintendent have been lying vacant for over five months. The Social Education Officer in this office has also been transferred a month ago. This post is also vacant. The block samiti has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, to fill vacant posts.
