SGPC member:
Dr Harcharan Singh Gill, a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee, was injured when his car was hit by a bus near Banur in Patiala district. Two of his ribs were fractured in the accident.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Small savings:
Mr D.S. Kalah, Commissioner, Patiala Division, while addressing an annual district-level prize distribution function of small savings here on Thursday said during the past year the state has got a loan of Rs 1400 crore on minimum rate of interest against the deposit made by the state government in small savings. He honoured the outstanding small saving agents and officials. Addressing the gathering Mr V K Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, said last year the district deposited Rs 29.50 crore in small savings against the target of Rs 18 crore.

Anti-smuggling drive: A special drive has been launched in the district to check the smuggling of liquor from adjoining states and Chandigarh, Mr Dyal Singh, ETO, Excise said here. In a press note issued on Thursday, the department claimed that many cases had been registered and over 20 bottles of liquor had been seized. Similarly bottles of wine have also been seized from tourist buses.

HOSHIARPUR
No clue:
The dog squad of Hoshiarpur police has failed to trace any member of a gang of Kale-Kachewale who killed two persons and injured 9 others seriously, including four women and robbed gold ornaments and other articles from Dharampura, Nawan Pind, Raian and Panch Dera (Patheran) villages on Tuesday in Mukerian subdivision. The gang looted gold ornaments and valuable articles worth about Rs 1.50 lakh from four families and killed Raghubir Singh, alias Beera of Galarian village and Harnam Singh in the house of Mr Jagtar Singh at Nawan Pind.

Sahit sabha:
The Punjabi Sahit Sabha has mourned the death of eminent Punjabi writer Jagdish Singh Armani. Armani was the founder of the sabha and author of 15 books.

Appointed: According to Ms Bhupinder Kaur, spokesperson of the Pradesh Congress Committee, Ms Veena Sharma has been appointed president of the District Mahila Congress, Patiala block.

Appointment: The Vice-Chancellor of the Punjabi University, Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, has appointed Dr S S Khera, Reader and Head of the Department of Law as Provest of the university hostels for a period of one year. Dr Khera will look after his work in coordination with the Dean, Students.

Compensation: The District Consumer Redressal Forum has directed Spice Telecom to refund the security amount of roaming facility and all other dues to a complainant, Mr Devinder Grover. The complainant had alleged deficiency in service as the Spice Telecom had charged excess bill and was not refunding the security of the mobile.

ROPAR
Two arrested:
The Nurpur Bedi police has arrested two persons, including a police Constable (absent from duty) for committing a robbery. A car, a .315 bore pistol and some cartridges were also recovered from them. According to a press note issued by Mr Jaskaran Singh, SSP, here the arrested persons, Onkar Singh, a Constable and Surinder Kumar, belonged to Nawanshahr district. They had bought a pistol from Farukhabad (UP) and forcibly took away a car on July 6 from near Gopalpur village in the area. The accused were also planning to commit a robbery at Ludhiana.

PANIPAT
Open darbar:
As many as 67 complaints were redressed at an open darbar held at Kalkhan village by the district administration. The Sub Divisional Magistrate, Mr S K Sharma, presided over the darbar in which officers of other departments were also present. Most of the complaints related to power and drinking water supply, removal of encroachments and construction of houses under the Indira Awas Yojna.

SONEPAT
Arrested :
The Kharkhauda police has foiled an attempt to smuggle buffaloes and calves by arresting three persons and a truck driver near Ferozepur Bangar village of the district. The SSP, Mr K.Selvraj, told mediapersons here on Friday that the arrested have been identified as Aseeb, truck driver, and his two associates Abdul Rehaman Hussain and Salaudin. A case under the Anti-Cow Slaughter Act has been registered.

Demanded: The Haryana Civil Medical Services Association has demanded a 25 per cent hike in the non-practising allowance from January 1,1996, on the central pattern. In a press note issued here on Friday it pointed out that a similar hike had already been made in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the doctors.

Impounded: Officials of the flying squad of the Haryana Roadways reportedly impounded a passenger bus of a former Haryana BJP minister at Gohana town, 35 km from here on Thursday. The bus carrying members of a marriage party, was on its way from Mahindergarh to Pinjore.

Irate mob: Employees of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam were assaulted by an irate mob at Jahri village, 5 km from here on Thursday. The incident occurred when they went to the village to remove a fault in a transformer. Residents said that the village remained without power for the past many days.

Camps for the handicapped: The District Red Cross Society, the Bhagwan Mahavira Handicapped Aid Society, the Lal Murari Lal Mool Chand Jain Charitable Trust, Sikandarpur Majra village and the Handicapped Seva Samiti are jointly organising a two-week handicapped welfare camp here from July 18 on the premises of Aggarwal Dharamshala. Mr Harish Chander Jain, SDM, told mediapersons here on Friday that these organisations would provide artificial limbs to the handicapped persons, free of cost, at the camp.

Cases solved: With the arrest of one person, the CIA staff, Gohana claimed on Friday to have solved a number of looting cases committed in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. SSP, K. Selvraj told mediapersons here that the arrested person had been identified as Ramesh, alias Baura, of Jagsi village in the district. A stolen motor cycle was recovered from him. During interrogation the accused confessed involvement in number of looting incidents in Jind and Kaithal districts. Case have been registered against him in Kurukshetra and Rohtak districts, Haryana and Baghpat (UP).top

HAMIRPUR
Woman dead:
Ms Kiran Kumari (28), of Balokhar village in the district died of suspected poisoning on Wednesday. Her body was brought to the local district hospital for a postmortem examination. The Bhoranj Police has registered a case and arrested her husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

KAKIRA
Inaugurated:
Mr Murli Manohar Joshi, Union Human Resource Development Minister, addressed a gathering after the inaugural ceremony of 'Shukal Yajurved Vidyalaya' set up under the aegis of Sri Swami Harigiri Charitable Hospital-cum-Research Centre at Kakira township in Chamba district of Himachal on Wednesday. Mr Kishori Lal, Himachal Industries Minister, also spoke on the occasion. Mr Mohan Lal, Himachal state Ayurveda, Minister, was also present on this occasion.

KANGRA
Suicide bid:
A Tibetan youth received 70 per cent burn injuries on Thursday when he set himself on fire. He was later shifted to the PGI at Chandigarh, in a critical condition. According to the police, Mr Kilson (25), is a resident of McLeodganj. The reason behind the self-immolation bid was, however, not immediately known.
