LPG as auto fuel
NEW DELHI, July 27 (PTI) — Buoyed by abundance of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the country, the Petroleum Ministry has favoured use of this petroleum product as an auto fuel for four wheelers and asked the Surface Transport Ministry to take necessary steps in this direction. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Santosh Kumar Gangwar has even favoured recourse to an ordinance for implementing the recommendation as necessary legislative provisions could not be made with the new Lok Sabha yet to be elected.

Arunachal House dissolved
ITANAGAR, July 27 (PTI) — The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly was today dissolved about eight months ahead of its term on the recommendation of the Mukut Mithi Cabinet to enable simultaneous poll to it along with the coming Lok Sabha elections. State Information and Public Relation Minister T.C. Teli told reporters here the government would urge Election Commission (EC) to hold simultaneous poll to the Assembly and the Lok Sabha. The decision to hold simultaneous poll was taken by the Mithi Cabinet yesterday to minimise expenditure as the tenure of the Assembly would expire in March and, "We can kill two birds with one stone," he said.

11 die in PoK blast
ISLAMABAD, July 27 (DPA) — At least 11 persons were killed and a dozen injured today when a bomb exploded on a bus in the town of Kotli in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the police said. The condition of some of the injured was said to be serious. Kotli is situated some 150 km southeast of here. No one claimed responsibility for the attack.

Bihar floods
NEW DELHI, July 27 (PTI) — The situation in flood-hit Bihar continued to be grim today with major rivers rising menacingly following heavy rains which also lashed eastern Uttar Pradesh and several other areas in the country. Major rivers in Bihar — Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati and Adhwara group — which had been flowing above the danger level, rose further following torrential rains inundating more areas.

Mansarovar pilgrims
BAREILLY, July 27 (UNI) — The ninth batch of pilgrims to Kailash Mansarovar returned to Dharchula today after heavy rains and landslides in Pithoragarh district of Uttar Pradesh blocked the roads. Official sources said here that the onward journey of the pilgrims would be possible only after the roads were cleared. One of the pilgrims in the batch, Nisha Prabhu Desai, belonging to Nasik (Maharshtra), had died in a landslide yesterday.

NEW DELHI, July 27 (UNI) — The BJP central leadership today ruled out the possibility of dissolution of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and going in for simultaneous poll along with the Lok Sabha. Describing the talks about the proposal for dissolution of the Assembly in the power corridors as "baseless", party General Secretary K. Govindacharya accused the Opposition of spreading these kind of rumours. The House has still about three years to go before completing its term, he said.

CWC meets today
NEW DELHI, July 27 (PTI) — A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is being held here tomorrow which is expected to deliberate on the draft election manifesto. The meeting is being held a week before the central leadership would commence the task for finalisation of tickets for the Lok Sabha elections and Assembly poll.

3 gunned down
AGARTALA, July 27 (UNI) — Militants of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) gunned down three persons, including two women, shot at five others and kidnapped three villagers in Tripura since last night. Police sources said the heavily-armed NLFT rebels waylaid an Udaipur-bound passenger jeep at Hatimura in South Tripura this morning and fired indiscriminately killing a teacher and an old woman on the spot. Three other passengers, who sustained bullet injuries, were admitted to a hospital, where one of the women succumbed to injuries.

6 die in ambush
GUWAHATI, July 27 (PTI) — Six persons, five Assam police personnel and a civilian driver, were killed and six injured in an ambush by suspected NSCN militants in central Assam’s hill district of Karbi Anglong today. Sources here said the NSCN ultras, armed with sophisticated weapons, waylaid the Assam police patrol party near a bridge between Tissobasti and Lailangdisha on the Borlangpha-Diphu road.

Mahatma Gandhi
JOHANNESBURG, July 27 (PTI) — More than 100-year after Mahatma Gandhi experienced racial antagonism in legal circles in South Africa, the Kwazulu Natal Law Society has apologised posthumously to him for opposing his 1894 application to become a lawyer for being a non-white. The move comes in the wake of repeated calls by progressive forces in Kwazulu Natal that the law society should apologise for its racial attitudes towards Mahatma Gandhi when he first arrived in the country that year.
