Corporation Beat
Payment cleared for firemen
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, June 4 — The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today recommended the payment of an amount of Rs 9.36 lakh to firemen in lieu of uniforms.

The decision of the committee follows a ruling of the Labour Court that the firemen should be given cash in lieu of uniforms for the years 1993-94 and 1994-95. It may be recalled that the firemen were reportedly denied the uniforms when the Fire Department was under the Chandigarh Administration for the said years.

The firemen then went to court which ruled in March last that they should be given cash in lieu of uniforms. The court had asked the civic body to pay the amount by May 31.

The meeting also approved the purchase of lime for the office of the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) and laying of sewer lines in Sector 37 behind Ambedkar Bhavan. Besides this the meeting also cleared the reserve prices fixed for the disposal of condemned vehicles.

The meeting could not take up the important issue of levying of fee on cable operators. The civic body was studying different patterns of levying charges on the cable operators. While the pattern of the Municipal Corporation, Faridabad, was being studied, the details from the Delhi Electricity Supply Undertaking (DESU) were awaited, sources said.

Similarly, the item pertaining to the computerisation of the civic body's office was also deferred.

Gate meeting: Members of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Roads Workers Union held a gate meeting in Sector 47 today to mobilise the workers for the success of a dharna to be organised on June 10.

The union is agitating for its demands which included the grant of DA and bonus to all UT employees, regularisation of the services of daily and work-charged employees, filling of the vacant posts and abolition of the contract system.Back
