AMRITSAR
Nominated:
The Federation of Non-Government College Management of Punjab and Chandigarh has nominated Mr Bhag Singh Ankhi of the local Khalsa College as Vice-President of the federation.

Workshop: A workshop of principals and subject coordinators of GND varsity will be held at Guru Nanak Bhavan, here on June 5. Dr S.R. Singh, Dean, College Development Council, says members of the UGC, Additional Education Secretary, DPI (Colleges), Punjab, Deputy Director (Education) and Deans of Colleges from Punjabi University, Patiala, and Panjab University, Chandigarh, are expecting to participate in the workshop.

Demonstration: The Indian Women Conference in association with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology and the Regional Resources Agency organised a workshop on water testing at Khalra and Bhikhiwind blocks last week. Senior scientists gave a demonstration of the checking of water samples.

FEROZEPORE
Cases settled:
A meeting of the District Grievances Redressal Committee was held here on Thursday. Mr Nirmal Singh Kahlon, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, was present on the occasion. As many as five of the 15 cases were settled on the spot. He directed the local Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner to ensure that no liquor shop should run near religious place, school and community centre.

Elected: Mr Iqbal Singh Chhabra has been unanimously elected President of the Lions Club (Greater), Ferozepore cantonment.

GARHSHANKAR
12 injured:
Twelve persons were injured when a Tata-407 in which they were travelling turned turtle at Tutemajara, near here, on Thursday. The injured were admitted to Mahilpur and Garhshankar hospitals. They were coming from Dera Beas.

Grants distributed: Mr Kamal Chaudhry, a member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, distributed cheques worth Rs 15 lakh among 34 villages of Garhshankar and Rs 14 lakh among 36 villages of the Mahilpur block for development purposes on Friday. The amount was released out of his discretionary grants.

HOSHIARPUR
One held:
The police arrested Jagdish Lal, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, from Mukerian railway station on May 31 and rescued Sunita (15), who was allegedly kidnapped by him. A case under Sections 363 and 366, IPC, was registered against him on May 26. According to a press note issued by the SSP, the girl was handed over to her parents and the court granted police remand to Jagdish Lal.

LUDHIANA
One held:
With the arrest of Vishal the police claims to have solved a murder of Sohanlal, a resident of Nawanshahr, whose body was found on the railway track on November 2,1998. During interrogation he admitted that he along with two accomplices, Sonu Sarma and Sushil Kumar, had thrown Sohanlal in front of a train.

Workshop: A multi-media theatre workshop will be held at Satluj Club from June 7 to July 7 for the children between the age group of 6 and 17 years. Mr Ashwani Jaitley and Mrs Tripti Jaitley, Directors of the workshop, said this here on Thursday. They said the workshop was designed to introduce the children to the world of arts in general and performing arts in particular.

Appointed: Mr Harpreet Sandhu, advocate, has been appointed General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Youth Congress (Legal Cell), Punjab, according to an announcement here on Thursday.

MALERKOTLA
Office-bearers:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club: President — Mr Anil Kumar Jain; Secretary — Mr Ish Kumar Gupta; Treasurer — Mr Rakesh Singla; and district Cabinet Secretary — Mr Ramesh Jain.

Appointed: Dr D.K. Gopal, Secretary, Indian Medical Association, Malerkotla branch, has been appointed Organising Secretary of the Indian Medical Association, Punjab, by its President Dr Rakesh Gupta.

Uniforms distributed: As many as 125 students of government primary schools under the Bhogiwal centre were provided free uniforms by Mr Pritam Singh Khalsa, teacher, Government Primary School, Alvialpura in this subdivision.

MOGA
New DC:
Mr Kanwal Bir Singh, Additional Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Patiala, took over the charge of the new Deputy Commissioner, Moga, on Friday. He replaced Mr Kulbir Singh Kang who has been transferred to Chandigarh as Special Secretary in the Department of welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes.

Demanded: Members of the BKU, in a communication to the Punjab Government, have demanded a probe into the working of revenue officials posted here. Mr Kuldip Singh, General Secretary, Punjab unit of the union, alleged that registration of deeds were completed only after bribing officials.

NAWANSHAHR
Vaccination drive:
Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated a hepatitis-B vaccination camp launched by the International Sri Satya Sai Society at Guru Nanak Mission Public Senior Secondary School, Dhahan Kaleran, 20 km from here, on Friday. As many as 550 students were vaccinated.

New ADC: Mr Dalip Kumar took charge as ADC (Development) here on Friday. Earlier, he was SDM, Khamano, Fatehgarh Sahib.

PATIALA
Additional charge:
Mr Devinder Kumar Dua, Senior Environmental Engineer, has been given an additional charge of member secretary of the Punjab Pollution Control Board by the Punjab Government, according to a press note of the board.

Urged: The Public Interest Litigation Aid Forum has urged Mr D.S. Kalha, Commissioner, Local Division, to convene a meeting of the Patiala Water Committee, constituted on the orders of Mr Birinder Singh, Additional Judge. Mr Ram Singh Salooja and Mr A.S. Nirman, President and Secretary, respectively, of the forum have urged him to call the meeting at the earliest so that the water problem faced by the residents is solved.

PHAGWARA
Demand:
The college of General Practitioners, an academic wing of the Indian Medical Association, has welcomed the decision of the Centre to ban smoking in trains and railway platforms from June 5. Dr Raman Aggarwal, state Secretary of the association, demanded that the smoking should also be banned in government and public places.

Five held: The local police arrested five members of a gang on Wednesday and recovered two pistols and two scooters from their possession. Mr Raj Balwinder Singh, SHO, said they were arrested under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. He said the arrested miscreants were Bahadur of Nepal, Ranbir Singh, Gurbinder Singh Samrai, Kamaljit Singh and Lakhwinder Singh.top

Rally: Members of the Capital Project Mechanical Workers Union held a mobilisation rally on Friday for the dharna to be held near the housing board roundabout on July 10. According to Mr Manmohan Singh, president of the union, their main demands were grant of DA, regularisation of daily wage workers, filling of vacant pots by promoting department candidates and abolition of the contract system.

Offered: In a letter addressed to Lt-Gen H.B. Kala, Army Commander, Western Command, Mr Devinder Singh Babla, president of the local unit of the Samajwadi Janta Party, has offered his services in any capacity in the operations in Dras-Kargil. He said the conflict had inspired him to do something for the country.

Died: Prof A.S. Kalra of Punjab Engineering College died on Friday at the age of 59, following a massive heart attack. His funeral will take place on Saturday at the Sector 25 cremation ground at 10.30 am.

Nominated: Mr Chander Mukhi Sharma, President of the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress Committee (CYTYCC), has nominated Mr Rajan Goyal General Secretary of the CTYCC.

Camp: A two-day free pollution check camp was organised by the Petroleum Conservation Research Association at the Sector 35 Bharat Petroleum petrol pump on Friday. According to Mr A. S. Bajwa, Divisional Manager of the association, literature on tips to save energy was also distributed free of cost among visitors to the camp.

Delegation: A delegation led by Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang, general secretary, Punjab Congress Committee, has demanded to establish Notified Area Committee (NAC) for Naya Gaon. In a memorandum to the Principal Secretary, Local Bodies, the delegation said an NAC was needed for development of the villages around Chandigarh.

KHARAR
Injured:
Six persons were injured when a bus and a truck collided near Desu Majra village on Kharar-SAS Nagar road on Friday.

Dharna: The patwaris of Kharar tehsil held a dharna on Friday, the fourth consecutive day. They criticised the Punjab Government for not accepting their demands.

Collapsed: A portion of a newly-constructed building in Government Primary School in Jhanjheri village collapsed in the rain and dust storm on Wednesday.top

BHIWANI
Power theft :
The HVPN has detected as many as 73 cases of power thefts in the district during this year, said the Deputy Commissioner, Mr K.S.Yadav, here on Friday. He said the FIRs had been registered against 23 persons and establishments and a fine of Rs 2.44 lakh had been imposed so far.

JIND
Two killed:
Two persons were killed on the spot when their scooter was hit by a vehicle on the Jind-Narwana road, 15 km from here, on Wednesday. The driver of the vehicle fled after the incident. The police has registered a case.

SIRSA
Imprisonment:
The Judicial Magistrate, Mr Pushpinder Kumar, has awarded two years imprisonment to Mukhtiar Singh of Darbi village in the district and imposed a fine of Rs 1,500 for attempting to molest Malkiat Kaur of the same village. In another case, Sita Ram, a jeep driver, was awarded one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,600 for rash driving. He was booked under Sections 279, 337, 338 and 427, IPC.

SONEPAT
Liquor seized:
The Ganaur police claimed to have foiled an attempt of liquor smuggling into Haryana by arresting two miscreants on Friday. Mr K.Salvraj, SSP, told mediapersons here on Friday that the police seized liquor from them. He said the arrested were Kuldeep of Bidhal village and Sudama of Mahra village and a case under the Excise Act had been registered.

Chain snatched: Two persons snatched a gold chain from Sonu, in the Nandwani Nagar area, here on Thursday.

BKU rally: The Haryana unit of the BKU has decided to hold a rally on June 21 at Karnal in protest against the state Government failure to get its share from the Ravi-Beas waters and completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna link canal, said Mr Braham Singh Dahiya, Vice-President of the union, here on Friday. top

NAHAN
Committee constituted:
Mr Rakesh Kaushal, Deputy Commissioner, said here on Friday that a joint action committee had been constituted to check illegal mining in the district. He said a fresh demarcation of government land would be carried in the mining affected areas. Regarding the use of tractors in mining, he said strict action would be taken against the defaulters.

Mela concluded: Bishu Mela at Andheri was concluded on Wednesday. The Minister of State for Urban Development, Mr R.D. Kashyap, presided the concluding ceremony of the mela. He said the work on the Puli Lani Saunfer link road would be completed soon and sanctioned Rs 60,000 for repair of school building at Andheri.

Proposed eye camp: The Hiteshi Service Society of Sirmour and the Panjhbota Swantrata Sonani Samaj Kalyan Samiti, Habban will organise a free eye camp at Nohrti Bhagot, situated in the Panjhota valley, 200 km from Nahan, on June 9. top
