Killed:
Amar Singh Yadav (25), a migrant labourer, died on the spot when he lost control of his scooter and fell into a rivulet at Hasta Kalan village , 10 km from here, on Saturday.

Bribery case:
Gurjinder Singh, Block Agricultural Officer, here, was caught red-handed by the DSP (Vigilance) while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from Mr Jaswant Singh of Mansa. A case has been registered

GARHSHANKER
Chimneys sought:
Mr Satish Rana, General Secretary of the Beat Welfare Committee, demanded the installation of smokeless chimneys in the tehsil. He alleged that a number of brick-kiln owners were violating the government rule by having their brick-kilns near residential areas.

GURDASPUR
24-hour supply:
The Punjab State Electricity Board has decided to provide 24-hour power supply in areas beyond the Ravi in Bharial Bulge and Ghania-ke-Bet and its surrounding areas in the Dera Baba Nanak sector. All repairs even if it amounted to the replacement of transformers will be done immediately, Mr K.S. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, has said.

Instructions: Mr B N Sharma, Deputy Director, Languages, has given instructions to the offices of the Deputy Commissioner, PWD, SSP, and Health Department regarding the use of Punjabi in official work. He also inspected the Treasury Offices Deputy Registrar, Cooperatives, District Social Welfare Office, District Food and Supplies Controller and the Zila Parishad in this regard.

Protest: Workers of the BJP, the Bajrang Dal and the INTUC took out a "shock yatra” at Shahpur Kandi here on Friday to protest against the intrusion of the Pakistani-backed infiltrators in the Kargil sector.

Foundation stone:
Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, on Friday laid the foundation stone of a new grain market at Hina Bajwa village near Sherpur, 20 km from here. He said Rs 14 lakh had been sanctioned for the grain market. He also inaugurated the 24-hour power supply scheme at the village.

Release sanctions: Mr Prem Kumar Rattan and Mr Bhupinder Singh Waraich, Presidents of the district units of the Ministerial Staff Services Union and the Democratic Teachers Front, respectively, in separate press statements here on Friday urged the Punjab Government to release financial sanctions and budget allotments to enable the employees working under plan schemes of different categories in the schools to receive their salaries.

Result:
National High School here has secured 100 per cent result in the matriculation examination. Mr Nirmal Singh, Principal, said 57 students passed in the first division while Bimaljot Singh stood second in the tehsil.

This was stated by the university NSS Coordinator who added that all NSS units would collect relief, and the NSS programme officers would contribute one month's honorarium to the Chief Minister's relief fund.

Dharna: Activists of the urban unit of the youth congress will stage a dharna on Sunday to protest against the arbitrary suspension of the Sarpanch of Hallo Majra village. Mr Ashish Kumar, secretary of the unit, alleged that the sarpanch, Mr Umesh Kumar Gupta, was suspended by the authorities for making a complaint against a lineman of the Electricity Department.

Employees union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the TBRL Employees Union: President — Mr A.K. Saini; Vice-President — Mr M.S. Bhonsra; General Secretary — Mr S.K. Juneja; Treasurer — Mr C.P. Singh; and Office Secretary — Mr A. Samuel.

Suggested: Mr Gurbachan Singh, General Secretary of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee, on Saturday suggested to the Central Board of Secondary Education and the Punjab School Education Board to introduce supplementary examinations for failed matriculation students. He said this would prevent students from taking extreme steps like committing suicide.

Meeting: The local unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), at an emergency meeting held on Saturday, unanimously resolved to follow all directives from the party high command regarding the forthcoming Lok sabha elections. Mr Satya pal Jain would be fully supported by the unit and the stand taken by Mr Gurpartap Singh Riar on the future of Chandigarh was his own, it clarified.

Dispensary: The Shirdi Sai Samaj on Saturday started a homoeopathic dispensary in Sai Sadan, Sector 29-A. Mr Vijay Kumar, president of the organisation, said this had been done for the benefit of poor patients.

Effigy burnt: The Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha burnt the effigy of the Pakistani Army on Saturday. According to a press note, morcha workers assembled at the Ayurvedic Dispensary in sector 28-B under the leadership of its President Jatinder Singh and then marched towards the Sector 28/27 lights, raising slogans against the Pakistani army.

Appealed: The President of the local unit of Samajwadi Janata Party, Mr Devinder Singh Babla, has appealed to the Chandigarh Administration to donate one-day's salary for those killed in Kargil. He also appealed to industrial and private concerns to donate generously to the Indian Army.

Hailed: Mr Prem Kumar, President of the All-India merchant Association and Vice-President of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, has hailed the appointment of Mr Joginder Singh Sawhney as the President of All-India Shiromani Akali Dal by the Party President Mr G.S. Tohra. He said Mr Sawney was associated with many social and educational institutions of the city and his appointment had brought hope for the traders and the residents of the city.

Function: The Ramgarhia Sabha will organise a special function at Ramgarhia Bhavan, sector 27 -D, on June 20, according to a press note. The function is being organised as a part of the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of the Khalsa.

Stationers association: The Chandigarh Stationers Association has elected Mr Raghubir Jain as President of the association.

KHARAR
Decided:
The Land Mortgage Banks Employees Union of Punjab has decided to contribute one-day's salary of all its employees towards the welfare of the soldiers killed or seriously injured in the Kargil sector. It will also organise a blood donation camp.

PANCHKULA
Recognised:
A spokesman of the BRS Institute of Medical Sciences, Kot Billa, in a press release stated that the Dental Council of India, through a notification, had recognised the BDS course being run by the college. Set up in 1992 and affiliated to the Kurukshetra University, the institute saw its first batch pass out in 1997 and complete its one-year internship in November, 1998.

ZIRAKPUR
Offered:
The Zirakpur welfare Society has offered the services of its members to protect the territorial integrity of the country. The society held a meeting on Saturday in this connection and observed a two-minute silence to pay tributes to jawans and officers who laid down their lives in the Kargil sector and elsewhere on the border.

SIRSA
Two arrested:
The CIA has arrested Dhanichand of Kherpur and Harichand of Bappa village in Dabwali subdivision for allegedly smuggling narcotics. On a tip-off Dhanichand was stopped by the police and 4 kg of opium was seized from him. On being questioned he said he had bought it from Harichand.

Suicide: Sonu, a student of class X of Akashdeep School, committed suicide by consuming celphos on having failed in the matric exam. According to information, Sonu, daughter of Mohan Lal of Kherpur, was in a depression after her failure.

Mishap: Ramesh Kumar was killed and Ram Chand injured when a jeep hit them near Mangala village on Friday. A case has been registered.

Property feud: A feud over property between two brothers, Darshan Singh and Satya Narain, of Chautala village in the district led to the killing of one, whereas two, others including a woman, were injured. The victim, Chhotu Lal, was the brother-in-law of Darshan Singh. A case has been registered.

Tree cutting: Gaj Singh and Patram Bavrian were arrested by Ellenabad police on the charge of theft on Friday for allegedly cutting trees from government land near Talwara Khurd village. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered. They have been remanded in judicial custody till July 1.

SONEPAT
Robbery:
Certain armed persons attacked Mr Surinder Singh and his wife, Mrs Rajwanti, at Shamri village, 40 km from here, on Thursday. According to reports, the culprits decamped with gold jewellery and cash. A case has been registered.

Hooda's tour: Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former MP and President of the HPCC, will begin his five-day tour of the district from Sunday in connection with the proposed visit of the AICC President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, to the city on June 26.

Traffic blocked: Irate residents here blocked the traffic on the road near Ferozepore Bangar village, 20 km from here, on Thursday in protest against the failure of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam authorities to replace the damaged transformers and ensure regular power supply to the village.

Power supply restored: The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam on Friday restored the essential load to the Departmental Telegraph Office (DTO) in the city. According to official sources, the essential load to the DTO was cut off by officials of the HVPN which had caused delay in the transmission of incoming and outgoing telegrams.

Blood donation: The Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Gramin Anchal Samiti has decided to organise a blood donation camp here for the benefit of Army jawans who suffered injuries in the Kargil sector. This was stated by Mr Bhagat Singh Balhara, National President of the samiti here on Friday.

Forest staff: The district unit of the Haryana Forest Department Mazdoor Union on Saturday protested against the non-payment of salary to the employees for the past six months and demanded the immediate suspension of the Rai Range Officer of the department. The union appealed to the employees to take part in the state-level rally scheduled to be held on June 26 and 27 at Kaithal.

Thieves held: The Sadar police has arrested Guman and Mohinder of Kheri district in Madhya Pradesh in connection with the theft committed in the house of Mr Dalip Singh of Sector 15 on the intervening night of June 8 and 9. The police said here on Saturday that it had recovered the booty, including gold ornaments from them. A case has been registered.top

Mr Mahender Singh, PWD Minister, on Thursday inaugurated the Tonru Danda Anj road and Rajpura-Agra-link road. He also sanctioned Rs 1.20 lakh for the construction of a room at each primary school in Dhamon and Salwala.
