AMRITSAR
Appointed:
Dr Mrs Pushpinder Kaur and Dr Avinash Kaur have been appointed as the heads of the Department of Zoology and Botanical Sciences respectively, for a period of three years in Guru Nanak Dev University by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr H.S Soch, according to an official release of the university.

BATALA
Arrested:
The police has arrested Madhu Bhushan of Purian Mohalla, on Tuesday under Sections 61,1,14 of the Excise Act. The SI, Mr Tilak Raj said 58 bottles of country made liquor were recovered from his godown. Later on he was released on bail by the Civil Judge, Mr Harinder Singh.

BATHINDA
Police pensioners:
The Punjab Government Pensioners Association has urged the government to include the special pay of police personnel into the total emoluments for fixing the notional pay on pay revision. In a press note issued here on Wednesday, Mr Kishan Singh, General Secretary, said government was going to revise the pay of police personnel from January 1,1986, but was not taking the special pay into the total emoluments.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
World Environment Day:
The World Environment Day was celebrated at Mandi Gobindgarh on Wednesday. Addressing the gathering, Mr Mohan Lal, Minister of Forest, said the target of tree plantation under the Japan project schemes will be achieved in this season. He urged the public to take part in tree plantation. He declared that social organisation or panchayat will plant maximum number of trees. They will be awarded Rs 1100.
New scheme:
The Punjab Government has introduced a new scheme for those transporters who have not paid their taxes under the Motor Vehicle Act for long. Mr M.S Jaggi, D.T.O, said under the scheme, the defaulters can deposit their taxes without paying any penalty or interest. The scheme will remain operative from June 25 to September 24. He urged that maximum transporters should benefit from it. After the expiry of the scheme penalties will be imposed on defaulters.

FEROZEPORE
Gang busted:
The police here, on Wednesday has arrested two robbers who were active in Haryana. The SSP, Mr Gurcharan Singh Pherurai, said they have been identified as Joginder Singh, alias Rajinder Singh of Nanakpura village. Two pistols, five cartridges and two jeeps were recovered from them. A case under Sections 399 and 401 of the IPC has been registered against the accused in the Mallanwala police station.
Prime Minister's Relief Fund:
Mr N.L Bajaj and Mr Harish Monga, President and General secretary, of the Markfed Employees Welfare Club, said here on Wednesday that the club had sent a demand draft of Rs 51,000 to the Prime Minister Relief Fund for the welfare of the families of Indian soldiers who died fighting in the Kargil and Dras sectors.
Inaugurated: Mr Zora Singh Mann, an ex-MP, inaugurated a Red Cross Computer Centre in the Red Cross complex here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, he apprised the gathering of increasing importance of computers in daily chores of life besides in business, trade and offices.

HOSHIARPUR
Sanitation problem:
Freedom Fighters and Senior Citizens Forum here, in a representation to the Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday, described the appalling state of sanitation particularly near educational institutions, hospitals, courts, bus stands and parks etc. Mr Shiv Datt Bali, convenor, of the Forum stated the they have brought it into the notice of the municipal authorities but they have failed to heed, to their request.
Protest march:
Thousand of workers of the Congress, the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha, the Rashtriya Vikas Party and Rickshaw, Tonga Operators Union along with Mr Sarwan Singh and Dr Ranjit of the Congress, Mr Nipun Sharma and Mr Nattar Chand Babbi of the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha and Mr Romesh Kumar Pappu led a protest march in the main bazaar here on Wednesday to protest against the Pakistani Government. They also burnt the effigy of Mr Nawaz Sharif.
Contaminated water:
Residents of Vasant Vihar, Katcha Toba, Krishan Nagar and Rishi Nagar are getting contaminated potable water supply from the municipal sources. Mr Narinder Kumar Ghai, of Vasant Vihar, found a snake in tap water, on Tuesday. According to official sources, Health Department, has not sent the water from the locality for analysis.
One-day salary: The government officers and employees here have decided to contribute their one-day salary for the welfare of soldiers killed and injured during the Army operation in the Kargil sector. This decision was taken in a meeting by Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner, on Thursday. The meeting praised the Indian Army for its efforts to flush out Pakistani intruders from the Kargil and Dras sectors.
Helmet compulsory
: Wearing of helmet by the driver and pillion rider of the two wheelers has been made compulsory from July 1. Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner said here on Thursday that Sikhs have been exempted from wearing it. He said this decision was taken after the Supreme Court vacated the stay on it.
Open house:
Telecom Department here organised an open house session of the telephone subscribers on Thursday to provide an opportunity to them to interact with senior telecom officers and give their suggestions for the improvement of the service. Mr Mohan Lal, General Manager, Telecom, said the telephones are likely to be made available on demand by March 2000.

Passport issued:
Applications received in the passport office here, up to serial number 402/10296/99 till February 13, have been processed and despatched to those, whose applications were found to be complete in all respects, till Monday.
Car thieves arrested:
The police has busted a gang of car thieves with the arrest of two members. Three stolen cars were recovered from their possession. Mr Gaurav Yadav, SSP, said here on Wednesday that nakas were laid by Mr Gautam Cheema, SP, Traffic, and Mr P.K Uppal, SP, City-1, and three cars were intercepted and culprits apprehended by the police while one of the accused managed to escape.

MOGA
Protest:
Due to picketing by women of Gholiankaln village under the Baghapurana police station for the past several days to protest against the opening of a liquor vend in the village, the administration has reportedly shifted the liquor vend from the village.
Cable theft:
Resentment prevails among Cable and Television Operators Union due to the thefts of their cables and boosters. A deputation of the Union said on Tuesday here that although they have referred these cases on Tuesday to the police along with the names of the accused they have not registered a case against them. The deputation of the unions also met the SSP, Dr Shard Chauhan, and apprised him of the situation but their problems have not been solved.

PHILLAUR
Buried alive:
Two labourers Amik Singh (15) and Sohan Singh (40) were buried alive while they were digging a well at Aaliwal village on Wednesday. Bodies were later on recovered and sent to Nakoda Civil Hospital.

Seminar: The local unit of the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM), will observe June 27 as Save Democracy Day at Lajpat Rai Bhavan, Sector 15, to coincide with 25 years of the declaration of emergency. A seminar will be organised to disclose the malafide intention of the then government in imposing Emergency in the country and the consequences everybody had to pay.
Condemned: Members of the Spinfed Employees Union on Thursday condemned anti-employee policies of the management. Mr Nirmal Singh Ghuman, president of the union, said the main item on the agenda in the forthcoming meeting was abolition of the posts of permanent employees, which was detrimental to interests of workers.
Result: The result (select list) for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Chandigarh, Selection Test-1999, for admission to Class VI conducted by CBSE on February 14 this year was put up on the notice board of the school on Thursday. Separate call letters for admissions were being issued.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Welfare Committee, Sector 27-D: President — Mr G.S. Cheema; Senior vice-president — Mr Mela Singh; Vice-President — Mr R.N. FATEHABAD
Symposium:
The local Evergreen Youngs Club organised a symposium on "The role of youths in Kargil crisis", here today. The speakers said India had won wars against Pakistan on previous occasions, and this time again our brave soldiers would once again give Pakistan a befitting reply. Mr Atwal, patron and Mr Rajiv Mehta, president of the club, were among those who spoke on the occasion.

HISAR
Tourism projects:
Haryana Government has approved 48 tourism projects worth Rs 351 crore and has decided to provide land to private entrepreneurs on licence for 33 years, the Minister of State for Tourism, Mr Ram Bhajan Aggarwal said here on Wednesday. The minister said the state government planned to encourage private entrepreneurs to set up hotel and other tourism projects in the state by declaring tourism as an industry.

SONEPAT
Memorandum:
Mr Prahalad Goel, of Aggarsein Nagar in a memorandum to the Minister of Communications and authorities concerned of the Telecom Department protested against the non-shifting of his telephone by the officials despite repeated requests. The memorandum pointed out that he had submitted his application on March 30 but the officials had failed to shift it. He also threatened to go to the Consumers Forum.

SIRSA
Seriously injured:
Gogi (27) of Baring Khera village was seriously injured in accident near Mandi Dabwali on Tuesday. Ms Sukhpaul Kaur wife of his elder brother was under treatment in a private nursing home at Mandi Dabwali, after delivery and he was going to Mandi Dabwali to donate blood to her, when his vehicle collided with a truck. He was hospitalised and was stated to be in critical condition.
Poppy husk seized:
Palaram, a Jat Sikh of Khuian Malkana village was arrested by the Dabwali police under the NDPS Act on Wednesday. The police has also recovered 18 kg poppy husk, which the accused had stored without taking permission from the authorities.
Canal water theft:
A criminal case under Sections 379, 430 of the IPC was registered against Jeet Ram and Manpal Singh of Ganga village on charge of theft of irrigation water. The complaint was lodged by Sub-Divisional officer of the Irrigation Department at Kalanwali.
Fertilisers:
The police with help of authorities of the agriculture department raided and sealed an unauthorised fertiliser godown at Mandi here, on Wednesday. According to informed sources, 772 bags of duplicate fertilisers were sealed and sent for analysis.
