Telephone adalat:
A telephone adalat of the Ferozepore secondary switching area was held here on Thursday, under the chairmanship of Mr Gautam Lal, Deputy GMT. As many as 63 complaints were settled on the spot.

GURDASPUR
One killed:
The Kahnuwan police arrested Santokh Singh of Mullianwal village on Thursday on a charge of murdering his wife, Jagir Kaur, on Wednesday. Sawinder Singh, another alleged accused, is at large. A case under Sections 302 and 34, IPC, has been registered.

JALANDHAR
Function:
A state-level function on the eve of the 601st birth anniversary of Sant Kabir will be organised at Budha Mal Park here on June 28. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Som Nath, said here on Thursday that the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, a former Prime Minister, Mr Inder Kumar Gujral, and a galaxy of prominent leaders would attend the function.

LUDHIANA
DYC (U) list :
The President of the District Youth Congress (Urban), Mr Pawan Dewan, on Thursday announced a list of 69 office-bearers of the DYC(U). The list approved by the President of the PYC, Mr Davinder Singh Babbu, has 22 vice-presidents, 22 general secretaries, 21 secretaries and four organising secretaries.

Income tax returns : The Income Tax Office, Ludhiana, Ward-I(7), I(8) and I(11), will remain open for accepting income tax returns on Saturday, according to the Commissioner of Income Tax, Mr K.K. Kapila.

Dharna: Residents of Gujjar Colony staged a dharna at Rahon road on Thursday in protest against the power failure in their area for the past four days.

NAWANSHAHR
Rally:
The District Literacy Society in collaboration with the United Welfare Association, Banga, organised a "sakhsharata march” in the district. The rally was flagged off by Mrs Monica Sunkaria, Chairperson, Association for Social Health in India, from Deputy Commissioner office. After passing through as many as 51 villages the rally was culminated at Khatkar Kalan village. A tribute was also paid to the Kargil martyrs by observing two-minute silence.

Solidarity march : A march was organised here on Wednesday by residents to express solidarity with the brave soldiers who are fighting in the Kargil sector. The march was jointly organised by social, religious and political organisations. The march concluded with the burning of an effigy of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

PATIALA
One held :
The Nabha police arrested a PSEB employee on Thursday for allegedly making obscene phone calls. According to Inspector Devinder Singh, Pawan Kumar (45), a resident of Heera Mahal Colony, had been making calls for the past many days. A case under Sections 294, and 506, IPC, was registered against him.

Meeting: A meeting of the State Executive, district executives and Mandal Presidents of the local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha was held on Friday to review arrangements for observing "Save Democracy Day" on June 27. Mr Ramashish Rai, National President of the BJYM, would be the main speaker at a seminar to be held on the occasion.

Clarification: A councillor, Mr Rajinder Kumar, on Friday denied that he had left the BJP and joined the ruling group in the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh. Reacting to a news item, he expressed belief in the policies of the BJP.

Urged: A delegation of the Chandigarh Pradesh Valmiki Sabha on Friday met the Mayor, Mr Kewal Krishan Addiwal, and urged him to instruct officials to construct a community centre in New Indira colony. The demand had been hanging fire since 1997, a press note alleged.

Film shows: As part of observing international drug de-addiction day, the Drug Awareness and Counselling Centre of Lajpat Rai Bhavan on Friday organised functions in Dhanas village and Kumhar colony, Sector 25, to spread the message of freeing society from the menace of drug abuse and alcoholism. Film shows, organised in collaboration with Joint Director, Field Publicity Department, Sector 9, were the highlights.

Contribution: All officers and staff of the Regional Employment Exchange have decided to contribute one day's salary towards the welfare of the defence personnel who laid down their lives in Kargil. The amount collected will be sent to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund set up for the purpose.

Remitted: Rs 15,500, donated by employees of the Technical Teachers Training Institute, Sector 26, has been remitted by draft to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Condoled: The Vice-Chancellor, Prof M.M. Puri, has condoled the death of Ms Vidya Walia, wife of Mr K.C. Walia, former Deputy Registrar. Many employees attended her cremation and a wreath was placed on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor.

Appreciated:
The Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha, Ropar district, in a meeting held on Thursday under the leadership of Mr Arun Sharma, president of the unit, appreciated the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, for his role in Kargil. It decided to arrange a blood donation camp for the injured soldiers and corner meetings to educate people about the malafide intentions of Pakistan.

Club installation: The local Rotary Club will organise a function at Arya College for Women on Saturday, in which Mr Ashoka Sharma and Ms Rajwant Kaur will be installed as Rotary President and Inner Wheel President, respectively, for 1999-2000. Mr Ranjit Bhatia, District Governor nominee for 2000-2001, will be chief guest.

Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of Manav Cooperative House Building Society, Suketri: President — Mr A.C.Kaushik; Vice-President — Mr Prem Chand Sharma; General Secretary — Mr J.P.Sharma; and Cashier — Mr Nand Lal.

Complained: The House Owners Welfare Association, Sector 17, on Friday complained about poor water supply in the sector. Mr S.K.Kalra, President of the association, said due to poor water pressure the first and second floors had to go without water.

Workshop: A workshop on hospital waste management and implementation of various measures for segregation of waste was organised by the state health authorities at General Hospital on Friday.

Function: The District Social Welfare Department will organise a function to observe International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking at Girls Senior Secondary School, Barwala, on Saturday.

Homage paid: The Friends Social Service Society organised a function on Friday to pay homage to Kargil martyrs at Guru Ravi Das Bhavan in Sector 15 on Thursday.

FATEHABAD
Funds allocated :
The Haryana State Agriculture Marketing Board will spend Rs 7.41 crore on setting up new mandis, providing additional facilities in the existing mandis and constructing and repairing link roads in the rural and urban areas of this district this year, according to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr V.Raja Sekhar.

KAITHAL
Diesel shortage :
Resentment prevails among farmers over a diesel shortage here. Farmers alleged that they had to wait in queues for hours to get diesel. According to information, the short supply of diesel by the IOC depot to the petrol pumps in the district has aggravated the problem. The demand has increases in this season due to paddy plantation.

SIRSA
Murder:
Jiwan Ram, a registered medical practitioner of Bappan village in Sirsa district, was allegedly hacked to death by five persons at Biruwala Gudha village in this district on Thursday. According to police sources, Jiwan Ram was allegedly abducted from the village on Thursday by five persons, including nephew of sarpanch of the village. The cause of the murder was not known. The body was cremated after post-mortem.

Faulty sewerage: Sewerage system in the local Agarsain Colony, Kirti Nagar and many other adjoining areas have collapsed. The sewerage sludge was overflowing on the State Bank of India road. Residents demanded that sewerage line on the SBI road should be replaced otherwise they would be forced to launch an agitation.

Suicide: Khan Chand (35) of Kotli village allegedly committed suicide at his native village by hanging himself on Thursday. Brothers of the deceased alleged that he was administered poison by his in-laws. The post-mortem was conducted at the local Civil Hospital.

Woman dead: Kanta Devi (27) of Mandi Dabwali committed suicide by consuming poison. She died at local Civil Hospital on Wednesday. According to sources, she has been under depression for many days.

Farmer shot: Gurdev Singh (45), a farmer of Kamal village, was shot dead and his wife injured when some miscreants fired at them on Wednesday. A case under Sections 302, 325, 323, and 148, IPC, and under Sections 25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered. Six miscreants were rounded up.

SONEPAT
Robbed:
Two armed miscreants entered the house of Mr Dharambir Singh at Khanpur Kalan village, 30 km from here, on Thursday and took away cash after injuring the family members. The police has registered a case.

Killed: Nafees (30), was knocked down and killed on the spot by a jeep on the G.T road, near Saboli village, 20 km from here, on Thursday. According to the police, the victim, who belonged to Muzzaffanagar district, was crossing the road when the accident occurred. The police has registered a case against the jeep driver.top
