Bansi, others pay homage to martyrs

CHANDIGARH, June 25 — The Haryana Assembly today paid homage to the Kargil martyrs and several leaders who had passed away recently.

The Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, moved resolutions to pay tributes to the brave soldiers who were killed in the action against Pakistani intruders and prominent persons, including Mr Sumer Chand Bhatt, a former Deputy Speaker of the Haryana Assembly, Mr Mohan Lal, a former Revenue Minister, Dr Virender Kumar Satyawadi, a former MP, Rao Jaswant Singh, Mr Kabir Ahmed Haji, father of Mr Khursheed Ahmad, P.K. Tripathi, a former Editor of Dainik Tribune, all those killed in the Panipat refinery tragedy, landslides and Padm Shree Hanuman, a wrestler.

Mr Bansi Lal mentioned that 40 brave soldiers had made the supreme sacrifice while fighting Pakistani intruders.

The Speaker, Mr Chhattar Singh, also paid homage to the martyrs and others.

Mr Om Parkash Chautala, Mrs Kartar Devi and Mr Ram Bilas Sharma paid rich tributes to the Kargil martyrs and others.

Earlier, Mr Chautala regretted that Chief Minister did not attend the cremation ceremonies. In contrast, he said, the Punjab and Rajasthan Chief Ministers had done all they could to assuage the feelings of the families of martyrs

5 councillors of BJP resign

YAMUNANAGAR, June 25 — Five municipal councillors of the BJP have submitted their resignation to the Deputy Commissioner, Yamunanagar, alleging that no official of the Jagadhri Municipal Council cared about their demands.

Mr Bhupinder Saini, district president of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) said here today that five municipal councillors of Jagadhri including Mrs Shashi Mittal of Ward No. 4, Mr Brij Bala of Ward No. 5, Ms Vidya Devi of Ward No. 13, Mr Dalip Madan of Ward No 2 and he himself had sent their resignations to the Deputy Commissioner, Yamunanagar.

Mr Saini said copies of the resignation letters had been sent to Mr Kushabhau Thackre, President of the BJP and Mr Om Parkash Grover, state president.

He said all development activities were at a standstill.

CHANDIGARH, June 25 — Names beginning with letter B have a special significance in Haryana among its Chief Ministers.

With the Congress support to Mr Bansi Lal, people in the secretariat and the Assembly speculated about the names beginning with B who could possibly occupy the seat of power after the current round of developments.

If Mr Bansi Lal offers to step down in the next few days as is being felt, the names of Mr Birender Singh and Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda are considered as possible alternatives. Even the name of Mr Bhajan Lal, who is also a member of Parliament, was mentioned as he could stage a comeback.

Unprecedented rush in Assembly

CHANDIGARH, June 25 — There was unprecedented rush of visitors and family members of ministers and MLAs at the Haryana Vidhan Sabha today when the House took up the Chief Minister's motion of confidence this afternoon.

The Speaker's gallery, the visitors' gallery and galleries of the officers and press were overcrowded because of anxiety about the outcome of the confidence motion.

An equal number of visitors could not find entry to the complex and had to wait outside for hours.

While Doordarshan did not appear to take any interest in its live coverage, NDTV showed interest in its coverage and telecast the proceedings live to the viewers.

Hospital opens DOST to prevent suicides

HISAR, June 25 — In order to provide psychological assistance to prevent possible suicides the Khetarpaul Hospital here has launched a separate and voluntary Department for Suicide Prevention and Treatment (DOST).

The Managing Director of the hospital, Mr N.K. Khetarpaul said there had been an alarming increase in the attempted suicides in the last few years.

Dr Khetarpaul said in most of the cases the suicide attempt is a desperate impulsive act provoked by various reasons. If a person gets timely psychological guidance, there is a possibility of the person abandoning the idea.

He said, the persons involved with DOST had been specially trained to provide care to such people. The identity of person is not disclosed but in some cases the close relatives of the patients are also taken into confidence.

In the past one month DOST has so far prevented at least a dozen possible suicides.

Woman poisoned to death?

FATEHABAD, June 25 — Mystery shrouds the death of a young married woman, Bhateri (24), at Dhand village in this district on Wednesday. Her brother alleged that she had been poisoned to death.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim's brother, Bodh Raj, a resident of Dhari Sanchpa village in this district, his sister; Bhateri, was married to Rajinder Kumar, a resident of Dhand village three years ago. She went to live with her husband only three months ago. According to Bodh Raj, her in-laws had been demanding a colour TV, a refrigerator and Rs 15,000 in dowry. He alleged that her husband, Rajinder, brother-in-law Krishan and mother-in-law murdered his sister by poisoning her. The police has booked the three accused under Sections 498-A and 304-B, IPC, but no arrest has been made so far.

It may be learnt that an elder sister of the victim is also married in the same family. The body of the victim was brought to the local general hospital for a post-mortem examination.

New home for Nanda's urn

KURUKSHETRA, June 25 — The urn containing the ashes of former Prime Minister of India Gulzari Lal Nanda was laid at a newly constructed samadhi by his son, Mr Narender Gulzari Nanda, and Mr P.C. Chib, President, Nanda Foundation, near the eastern bank of the sacred Brahm Sarovar here today.

A yajna was performed at the samadhi site. The urn containing the ashes of the late Prime Minister was earlier carried in procession and recitation of mantras from Shri Krishana Museum to samadhi site. A police contingent paid tributes to the late leader.

Those who attended the ceremony were Mr S.N. Roy, Deputy Commissioner Mr D. Suresh, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Alok Roy, Superintendent of Police, Dr M.L. Ranga, Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, Mr Lajveer Singh, SDM Thanesar, Mr S.C. Sharma, Secretary, Nanda Foundation, and representatives of various social and religious organisations.

Food poisoning claims 4 lives

SONEPAT, June 25 — Four persons died of food poisoning while as many were taken ill at a marriage party in Raksera village, about 35 km from here, yesterday.

According to preliminary reports, the victims have been identified as Anand (35), Mona (12), Seema (13), and Karnail (32). The condition of two is stated to be serious and they are struggling for their lives at a private nursing home at Ganaur, a sub-divisional town in this district.

It is stated all of them were members of a marriage party and they were staying at a "dera" in the village. All of them fell ill after having meals and rushed to the private nursing home at Ganaur.

The Samalkha police has registered a case in this connection.

Man kills son

FATEHABAD, June 25 — A young man was shot dead by his own father at Bhirdana village in the district.

According to reports, Shankar, shot his son, Yashpal with a licensed weapon after a minor altercation. Raj Pal, a brother of the victim, lodged a complaint with the police.

The police has booked the accused under Section 302 of the IPC and sections 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

4 commit suicide

FARIDABAD, June 25 — Six persons were killed and six injured in different accidents during the past 24 hours, according to late information reaching here today.

Two youths, Kamal and Titu, aged 26 and 28 years, committed suicide after consuming some poisonous substance. The reason behind the incident could not be known.

In another case, 40-year-old Ghanshyam committed suicide after strangling himself with a rope in his house in Sector 8 here under mysterious circumstances.

A 28-year-oldman Ram Kumar, committed suicide in his house in Mujeshar after consuming some poisonous substance.

Two unidentified farmers, who were returning home after selling wheat were killed when their tractor trailer collided with a tanker near Bahroli village, about 90 km from here.

More than eight persons were injured in varius accidents today.

The police has registered all cases and is making investigations.
