AMRITSAR
Rare distinction :
The local Animal Husbandry Department has achieved a rare distinction by winning 14 prizes for all 14 entries sent by it at the northern regional cattle show at Sundernagar in Himachal Pradesh. According to Dr Pawan Gandhi, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Amritsar received maximum prizes among all districts from the state.

GURDASPUR
Bangladeshis held:
The police on Wednesday arrested eight Bangladeshi nationals from a house in New Shastri Nagar, Pathankot, for not having valid passports. A case under Sections 3,34, and 20, IPC, and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, has been registered.

Cement recovered: The police on Wednesday arrested Kuldip Singh of Khanpur and Surjit Singh of Sailian Kullian and recovered 115 bags of cement meant for government construction from their possession during a raid A case has been registered.

HOSHIARPUR
Hawala gang:
The police claims to have busted a hawala gang with the arrest of one of its member here on Monday. The SSP told mediapersons that following information, the police arrested Anup Kumar of the Shiv Gali Bahadurpur Chowk and recovered Rs 2.5 lakh and £ 1000 from his possession on Monday. A case under Sections 414 and 411, IPC, and Sections 8, 9, 9D, and 45 of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.

Dowry case : The police on Monday registered a case against Joginder Pal, and his mother of local Mohalla Rahimpur under Section 304-B, IPC in connection with the death of Gurmeet Kaur, Joginder Pal's wife. Demand for more dowry is stated to have let her to commit suicide.

Foundation stone : Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a 50 bedded hospital to be constructed at a cost of Rs 1 crore here.

KAPURTHALA
Tractor recovered:
The police claims to have busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of two of its members. The SSP in a press note on Wednesday, said the accused had been identified as Avtar Singh and Sarabjit Singh,both of Sangowal and a stolen tractor had been recovered from their possession.

LUDHIANA
Lecture on AIDS:
The NSS unit of the SDP College for Women organised a lecture on AIDS on Wednesday. Mr Om Parkash Gupta, former MLA, presided.

Annual function : Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal addressed the annual prize distribution function of the Government College for Women here on Wednesday. He said state governments had not brought about substantial improvement in the education system, resulting in increase in unemployment. He announced cash prizes of Rs 10,000 each for 10 students.

Appointed:
Mr Gurmail Singh Gahir of Sunam has been appointed state general secretary of the Backward Classes cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

Freedom fighter: A freedom fighter, Mehar Chand, aged 79, is battling for his life, following a cardiac problem. He is admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), PGI, and is in need of financial assistance.

Courted arrest: As many as 187 teachers courted arrest on Thursday as part of the agitation of the Punjab State Aided Schools Teachers and other Employees Union, in front of the Punjab Civil Secretariat. Mr Surinder Sharma, a spokesperson of the union, said these employees belonged to Patiala, Sangrur, Ferozepur and Ropar districts. Meanwhile, the teachers lodged in Burail jail have started an akhand path, while a batch of 21 employees observes a chain fast everyday.

Condoled: The local unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), at an emergency meeting held on Thursday, condoled the death of its Vice-President, Mr Harbans Singh Sudan.

Blood donation camp: About 60 students donated blood at a camp organised at the Government College of Education, Sector 20, on Thursday. The camp was organised by the college in collaboration with the University Branch of SBI and the NSS unit of the college. Earlier, the Principal, Ms Surinder Kaur Tangri, motivated the students by saying the gift of blood was one which forever ran in the veins of the recipients.

Mourned: The Executive Committee of the Government Teachers Union on Thursday expressed sorrow at the demise of Mr Palwinder Singh, a prominent leader of the union. It appealed to the Administration to grant financial help to his family out of the teachers’ fund.

Foundation day: A blood donation camp will be organised on Friday to mark the third foundation day of the blood bank at the General Hospital. A microwave diathermy and an ECG facility would also be inaugurated

Roads: The Residents Welfare Association of Housing Board Colony for Economically Weaker Sections on Thursday drew the attention of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) towards the poor condition of roads in the colony. The President of the association, Mr K.L. Papneja, said the roads in the colony, which had been repaired a few years back, had developed potholes.

Rally: The General Secretary of the National Lok Dal, Mr Pardeep Chaudhary, on Thursday said the rise in prices of essential commodities had adversely affected the common man. He said the party would organise a rally at Delhi on March 13 in this connection.

Killed :
Amar Singh was killed in a Canter-truck collision near Mohra village on the GT Road, 5 km from here, on Monday. A case of negligent driving has been registered against the truck driver.

BHIWANI
Gang busted :
The Dadri police has claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of idol smugglers with the arrest of four persons who were trying to sell an ancient idol of Lord Mahavira worth lakhs of rupees, at Charkhi Dadri. Those arrested have been identified as Sunder Lal of Achina village of this subdivision, Vishram Singh of Asandhpura, and Raj Kumar and Khalil of Kaletha in Uttar Pradesh. A case has been registered.

Raped :
A married woman from Bihar was allegedly gang raped by three youths in the Tibba Danasher area here on Tuesday. A case under Sections 376, 323 and 506, IPC, has been registered against Kuldeep of Bharat Nagar and Bhag Singh and Maddi of Tibba Danasher. No arrest has been made so far.

KAITHAL
Clarification :
As reported earlier about an HCS officer travelling without ticket on Friday last, the roadways authorities here have clarified that as the officer concerned had paid the fine, no case had been registered. The Traffic Manager, Haryana Roadways, Kaithal, had earlier lodged a complaint with the police in this regard.

Appointed :
Mr Vijender Ahlawat, a zila parishad member from here, has been appointed general secretary of the youth wing of the Indian National Lok Dal, according to a press note issued here on Wednesday.

Scooter found:
The police has recovered a stolen Kinetic Honda scooter from Bablu Kumar , alias Chun Chun Kumar, of Alewal Kalyanpur in Bihar. The accused has been arrested and a case registered against him.

SONEPAT
3 arrested :
The Ganaur police has arrested three youths of Udesipur village in connection with the forcibly taking away of a motorcycle and cash from a resident of Gumar village on February 24. The SSP told mediapersons here on Wednesday that those arrested had been identified as Kehar Singh, alias Kehri, Mainpal and Ajay.

Murder case solved : The police on Wednesday claimed to have solved the alleged murder of Rajinder, a shopkeeper on December 8 with the arrest of Narinder, Jatinder and Jatinder, alias Nitoo. The accused are said to be higher secondary students.

Thief held : The police on Tuesday arrested Raju Balmiki of Chhara village for being found in the possession of a stolen LPG cylinder. According to the police, the accused had stolen the cylinder from the house of a resident of the same locality.

Free eye camp : The National Ex-Servicemen Coordination Committee, in collaboration with the local unit of the Hindu Manch, will organise a free eye-operation camp at Sanskrit High School in Bahalgarh village on Saturday. Boarding and lodging facilities will be provided free of cost to indoor patients.

Suspended : The Haryana Government has placed Mr M.P.Kaushik, Block Development and Panchayat Officer, Ganaur, under suspension and ordered a departmental inquiry against him. Following public complaints against him.
Suicide: Mukesh (27) reportedly committed suicide by taking poison in his house in Dharok Basti here on Tuesday. According to the police, the victim was involved in a murder case and had been released on parole. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Youth killed :
A youth, Manoj Kumar, of Behal Kandela village, near here, was crushed to death when his scooter came between a truck and a tanker on Tuesday.

HAMIRPUR
Wood smuggling:
The Barsar police has arrested Nikka Ram of Bhageri village of the district for allegedly smuggling 21 logs of khair wood to Lathiani in Una district. The district police chief, Mr R.M.Sharma said here on Wednesday that the vehicle carrying the wood was impounded near Galu village. A case under Sections 41 and 42 of the Indian Forest Act and Section 379 of the IPC has been registered.

Urdu lecturers:
The Rasa Javedani Memorial Literary Society at a meeting held here on Wednesday alleged that the selection committee constituted by the government for the appointment of Urdu lecturers in the state had not only neglected candidates from the Jammu region, but also ignored qualified students who had cleared UGC's Net examination.
