BARNALA
Health camp:
Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, inaugurated a health mela organised by the local Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Government High School here on Sunday.

FEROZEPORE
Protest march:
Members of the local Rotract Club (Main) and the Sangharsh Society held a silent march on Saturday in protest against the poor condition of roads, street-lights and other basic amenities. A memorandum was presented to the district authorities in this regard.

GURDASPUR
Smuggled bats seized:
The police has arrested Ali Mohammad and Muzaffar Ahmed, both residents of Rishipur in Pahalgam district in Jammu and Kashmir, and recovered unauthorised 180 cricket bats from their possession which were being smuggled into Jalandhar. Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, said they were intercepted at T-point, Defence Road, Madhopur.

MOGA
Banned:
The District Magistrate , Mr Kulbir Singh Kang, in an order issued here on Monday banned the use of Army uniform among people all over the district with immediate effect. A ban has also been imposed on painting vehicles with the colour used on Army vehicles.

NAWANSHAHR
Death anniversary:
Tributes were paid to Giani Harcharan Singh Mahalon, former Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, at a "shardhanjali samaroh" organised at his native village, Mahalon, 3 km from here, on Sunday on his fourth death anniversary.

PATIALA
Forum:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Incan Investors Forum here:President — Mr S.S. Matharu; Vice-President — Mr Harbans Singh; General Secretary — Prof S.S. Rana; and Treasurer — Mr K.D. Khosla.

Camp: A blood donation camp was organised by the local Rotary Club (Midtown) and the Punjab Cooperative Department at the Central Cooperative Bank here, according to a press note.

Insurance employees: The district branch of the North Zone Insurance Employees Association has decided to form a women's wing of the association. This was stated by Mr Narinder-Walia, President of the Chandigarh division of the association.

Income tax camp: The Income Tax Department organised a camp here to educate new tax payers on the filing of their tax returns. The camp was inaugurated by Mr B.S. Rattan, Commissioner, Income Tax, Patiala Range.

Camp: A cattle welfare camp was organised by the local Rotary Club and Milkfed at Sabzpurnaya village on the Patiala-Samana road.

Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Patiala Financiers Association here: President — Mr Gurdip Singh; Vice-President — Mr Naveen Aggarwal; Honorary Secretary — Mr Daljit Singh Sabherwal; and Treasurer — Mr Hardarshan Singh.

Appointed: Mr Surjit Singh and Mr Inder Kumar have been appointed Vice-President and General Secretary, respectively, of the district BJP trade and industry cell, according to Mr Sushil Garg, President of the cell.

SANGRUR
Ban orders:
Mr Anirudh Tewari, District Magistrate, has banned the use of loud speakers without permission. Playing of songs at shops and the use of pressure horns on vehicles in the district has also been banned. These orders will remain effective till May 13.

TARN TARAN
Check-up camp:
About 1,900 patients were examined at a free medical check-up camp organised here on Sunday by the SGL Charitable Trust, Jalandhar. Medicines free of cost were given to patients.

Eye camp: A four-day “Shahid Bhagat Singh Memorial Free Eye Operation Camp” organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) concluded here on Monday. A total of 150 patients were examined during the camp. Another 20 were operated upon. The camp was organised at Dadu Majra. A cultural programme, including a bhangra and giddha was presented by the village youngsters on the occasion.

Barbie contest: As many as 300 school students took part in the ‘Barbie colour contest’, organised by a toys company at DAV Public School, Parwanoo here on Monday. The students were from three different schools, namely, Eicher School, Parwanoo; Himachal Primary School and DAV Public School. Mr Somi Basu, Regional Manager of the company, presided over the function and distributed prizes.

Strike: Members of the Akashvani and Doordarshan Administrative Staff Association went on a strike on Monday in support of their demands. They were demanding pay parity with the engineering and programme staff.

BHIWANI
Local committees:
Mr D.S. Desi, Additional Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Haryana, directed the district officers to set up local committees to see that repair and construction of roads was done in time. He was talking to the district officers while reviewing the construction work of various projects at the PWD Rest House here on Monday.

CM's assurance: Mr Bansi Lal, Chief Minister, has assured the people of Tosham town, 28 km from here, that all basic amenities will be provided to them. He was addressing a gathering at the PWD Rest House, Tosham, on Sunday.

FARIDABAD
Murdered:
Jawahar, a junk dealer, was murdered in a brawl at Shiv Colony here on Saturday. One of the accused reportedly hit Jawahar's head with a liquor bottle and a brick resulting in his death.

Arrested: The police here has arrested three employees of a cable television network in Sector 15 for allegedly showing a pornographic film through a Russian satellite television channel here on Saturday. A case has been registered under Section 292, IPC, and Section 7 of the Cinematography Act.

KURUKSHETRA
Renovation:
The Haryana Governor, Mr Mahabir Prasad, on Monday laid the foundation stone of Saraswati Tirath, Pehowa, 30 km from here, which is to be renovated at a cost of Rs 1.3 crore. The Kurukshetra Development Board has undertaken the work of renovation.

NARAINGARH
Eye camp:
The local Lions Club organised a three-day free eye operation camp at the Civil Hospital which concluded here on Sunday. About 486 patients were examined and 38 were operated for cataract.

SIRSA
Case registered:
A case under Sections 448, 506, 148 and 149, IPC, has been registered against Devi Lal and his sons Mohinder and Subhash of Bharu Khera at Sadar police station, Mandi Dabwali, on Sunday. Ranvir Singh of the same village had alleged that the accused had encroached upon his plot and threatened to eliminate him. The accused have absconded.

Mishap: Sant Lal (30) and Vinod Kumar (22) of the district were injured in an accident on Sunday. According to informed sources, both were returning to their house on their cycle when they collided with a jeep on Hisar Road.

SONEPAT
Arrested:
The Rai police has arrested Devinder of Manana village in Panipat district and recovered a pistol and six cartridges from him. The SP, Mr K. Selvraj, told mediapersons here on Sunday that the arrested was wanted in a case of murder and another under the Arms Act.

BILASPUR
Budget passed:
A two-day meeting of the zila parishad held here on Saturday passed its budget of Rs 1,46,65,000 for the next year. The meeting was presided over by Mr Dilaram Dhiman, chairman of the parishad.

CHAMBA
Journal released:
The Himachal Pradesh Industries Minister, Mr Kishori Lal, here on Sunday released the annual issue of "The Matrivandana", a journal launched by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).

Divisions sought: Residents of Bhattiyat subdivision in the district have urged the Himachal Pradesh Government to create new divisions of the Public Works Department, Irrigation-cum-Public Health Department, State Electricity Board and Forest Departments at Chowari. They said the opening of these divisions would accelerate the pace of development in the area.

KULU
Houses gutted:
Five houses were gutted and eight families rendered homeless in a fire at Kharaka village in Lug valley, 10 km from here, on Saturday. Mr Karan Singh, Minister of State for Primary Education, visited the village and announced Rs 50,000 as relief.

NAHAN
Pay damages:
Mr Mrigaindera Singh, President, District Conumser Forum, has ordered Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) to pay Rs 7,000 as damages and Rs 500 as litigation cost to the complainant Mr Parkash Chand Bansal, of Nahan within 30 days. Mr Bansal had reportedly lost his luggage on a CTU bus, on December 28, 1996.

Strike called off: The Sirmaur Bus Operators Union has called off its three-day long strike after getting an assurance from Ms Shayama Sharma, Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board regarding tax payment.

Notice given: The state unit of the DC Office Employees Union at a meeting held here on Saturday decided to serve a 15 days' notice on the state government regarding the implement action of their demands accepted in 1997. Mr J.N. Sharma, president of the union, said an action committee had been formed to pursue the future course of action.

SHIMLA
Indefinite fast:
The democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) here has supported the indefinite fast by Mr Ramesh Kumar, who is a postgraduate teacher in DAV School, Lakkar Bazar, in a press note issued here on Monday. This was stated by Mr Roop Lal Harmot, DYFI Secretary.

SUNDERNAGAR
Fair starts:
"Devta fairs", where offerings are made to about 100 Gods, started here on Sunday. Mr J.P. Nadda, Health Minister, was the chief guest.
