GURDASPUR
Two held:
The Pathankot police has arrested two persons — Kamal Kumar, alias Pakora, a resident of Pathankot and Kaan, a resident of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh. Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, said here on Sunday that Pakora was involved in various cases, including cases of theft and murder under Sections 457 and 380. The other person Kaan had been declared a proclaimed offender in two criminal cases registered against him by Pathankot city police more than 20 years ago.

Forgery: The police has registered a case of forgery against Fateh Singh of Gaggowali village under Dhariwal police station for forging an SC/ST certificate in connivance with the village Lambardar. On the basis of this certificate the accused had contested the reserved quota post of village sarpanch in elections and was elected.

LUDHIANA
Fire:
Goods worth lakhs of rupees were burnt in a fire that erupted in a unit of Shakti Spinners Private Limited at 2.30 a.m. here on Monday. Firemen extinguished the fire nine hours after the incident. The cause of the fire is not known.

MALERKOTLA
Road repair:
The 1.5 km stretch of road from Satta Chowk to the railway station is in a bad shape. The Civil Hospital, office of the Punjab State Electricity Board, two schools and many nursing homes are situated on this road, but it has not been repaired by the Municipal authorities for more than10 years. A number of deep potholes make it all the more risky at night time especially in the absence of street lights. Mr Amarjit Singh Sekhon, Executive Officer of the local Municipal Council said the repair work would be completed within a month.

PATIALA
Appeal:
The local Valmik Dharam Sewak Sabha, Dhiru Nagar, appealed the Municipal Corporation on Sunday to vacate the encroached land in the area. The sabha has also sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner and Director Local Bodies, regarding this.

SANGRUR
Financial assistance:
The District Sainik Welfare Board has distributed Rs 27.5 lakh among 760 ex-service and widows over 65 years as financial assistance and Rs 2.8 lakh among 48 ex-servicemen for the marriages of their daughters during the last financial year. Mr Anirudh Tewari, Deputy Commissioner said besides financial assistance a sum of Rs 1.68 lakh had been distributed as scholarships among 101 students.

Condemned: The Punjab Civil Secretariat Staff Association at its meeting held on Monday condemned the "illegal detention of employees residing in government houses in Sector 39 following their protest rally against the Punjab Government on Sunday." The association maintained there were no prohibitory orders in force in the area and as such the action of the police in detaining them was illegal.

The tehsil welfare officer, Kharar, in a press note issued here on Monday asked the heads of all middle, high and higher secondary schools in Kharar and SAS Nagar tehsils to procure the books meant for distribution among students belonging go the Scheduled Castes free of cost from the BSM High School, Kharar, up to May 10.

FATEHABAD
Seized:
The police seized large-quantity of liquor and arrested five persons in this connection on Saturday. It seized 48 bottles on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) from a jeep and arrested Dharam Paul, of Nehrana village in Rajasthan. Another person Pawan Kumar, of Pilimandori village however escaped. In another incident, it seized 48 bottles of country made liquor from a jeep and arrested Bhoop Singh, of Dhand village. As many as 144 bottles of liquor were seized in two other incidents.

HISAR
Fire:
Household goods worth several lakh were destroyed in a fire that broke out in a house in Professor Colony here on Saturday. None of the family members was present in the house when the fire broke out. Neighbours informed the fire brigade when they noticed the flames.

Symposium: Over 100 farm scientists from all over the country engaged in research on pearl millet will converge at CCS Haryana Agricultural University on May 7 to participate in a symposium on "Pearl Millet Improvement — past achievement and Future Priorities". Dr D.C Nijhawan, head of Bajra section at the university, said here on Sunday that a meeting of the All-India Coordinated Pearl Millet Improvement Project would be held from May 4 to 6 on the campus.

Family health:
The family health awareness week was organised at Ahar village from April 26 to May 1 by the Health Department and Haryana AIDS Control Society here. It was inaugurated by Mr Bijender Singh Kadiyan, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry and Health. Dr D.P. Mangala, Director of the State Health Department, was the chief guest.

Energy Day: International Energy Day was celebrated here on Monday to create awareness among people, particularly the young generation, about the unlimited source of solar energy. A ‘Run for Energy’ was organised at district-level, and students of 10+2 from different schools took part in it. It was flagged off by Mr Anil Malik, Additional Deputy Commissioner, from MLN Senior Secondary School here and it concluded at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Jagadhri. An essay writing competition on "Sun is the Ultimate Source of Energy" was also held at Government Senior Secondary School at Jagadhri.

REWARI
Inaugurated:
Cooperation Minister Rao Narbir inaugurated a cooperative bank at Guriani village, 25 km from here, on Saturday. The new branch is the 15th branch of the Central Cooperative Bank, Rewari, in the district. The minister said five mini banks one each at Guriani, Gugodh, Bhairampur Rattanthal and Tumbaheri would soon be set up to facilitate the farmers in 17 villages in Kosli subdivision of the district. He also said the rate of interest on agricultural loans had been lowered from 16 to 14 per cent.

ROHTAK
Power supply:
A former minister Mr Krishan Murti Hooda, said here on Sunday that while the state government had been talking of providing round-the-clock power supply from June 30, several villages in the district, including Kildi, Dhamar, Sisrauli, Makkoli Kalan and Khidwali, were getting power supply only for five hours in a day. The supply in other rural areas was also poor. He said several damaged transformers had not been repaired by the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam.

SIRSA
Condemned:
Mr Bajrang Dass Garg, president of the Haryana Pradesh Beopar Mandal, has strongly condemned the state government for increasing rural development tax. He alleged the state government was anti-industrialists and anti-farmers. He said the people were demanding a decrease in the market committee fee as it was higher than that in the other states. He alleged the hike adversely affected business of oil, pulses and other mills in the state.

PNB staff union: The following were elected office-bearers of the Punjab National Bank Employee Union local branch on Saturday: president — Mr Ramesh Sharma; vice-president — Mr P.P Singla and Mr Muklak Ram Chodhary; general secretary — Mr Ramesh Gakhar; and secretary — Mr Naresh Garg.

Market Committee: Mr Krishan Lal Saini, chairman of the Market Committee, said here on Sunday that the market committee had allotted Rs 25 lakh for the repair of roads in city and the work would be completed with in a month. He also said the construction of toilets in additional anaj Mandi would also be completed within a month.

Case solved: The Crime investigation agency of the local police has solved the case of murder of Major Singh, a farmer of Thobraian village in the district by arresting Bhadur Singh, a neighbour of the deceased. Mr B.S Sandhu, SSP, said Major Singh was found murdered on April 22 and during investigation Bahadur Singh revealed that the deceased had molested and misbehaved with his wife and he had murdered him to take revenge. The police has also recovered murder weapons.top

The fifth district conference of the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti was held here on Sunday. Delegates from Theog, Rampur, Mashobra, Rohru, Basantpur and urban and rural areas of the district took part in it.
