LUDHIANA
Animal welfare camp:
An animal welfare camp was organised by the local Chapter of the People for Animals here on Sunday. About 80 animals were vaccinated and examined by Dr S.S. Randhawa and Dr Rajiv Bhandari alongwith their team. The camp was inaugurated by the Joint Director, Animal Husbandary, Dr B.S.Gill. An exhibition of picutres on the theme "cruetly on animals" was also organised.

MALERKOTLA
Mishap:
Five persons were injurd seriously in a head-on collision between two trucks on the Malerkotla-Ludhiana road near Sarond Chowk on Saturday. The injured have been identified as Saranjit Singh, Sarbjit Singh, Baljinder Singh and Devinder Singh. However, one is yet to be identified and his condition is stated to be serious.

MOGA
Potable water:
Residents of many villages under the Baghapurana police station on sunday complained of shortage of potable water for the past two months. They said water reservoirs in these villages had not been filled because of a faulty supply system.

Died: Hardayal Singh Mauji, a retired SSP and a social worker, died here on Saturday after a prolonged illness. He is survived by two daughters.

PATIALA
NTAS' gesture:
The National Theatre Arts Society, Patiala, on Sunday offered to present shows of their Punjabi musical satire "Salvaan" free of cost in aid of the Indian Red Cross Society anywhere in Punjab and neighbouring states. Pran Sabharwal, Director, NTAS, paid tributes to the memory of Sir Henry Durant, the founder of the Red Cross movement.

Chandigarh Briefs
Supported: The Punjab State Ministerial Services Union has supported the ongoing agitation launched by the Punjab Government employees against the hike in rent of government accommodation. In a press note issued here on Monday, Mr Raman Sharma, the President of the union, said if the hike was not withdrawn, the union would launch a stir against it.

Complained: Residents of Sector 19 complained to the Mayor, Mr Kewal Krishan Addiwal, that streetlights were not functioning and sewerage was blocked, when he visited the sector on Monday. They also demanded maintenance of cleanliness in the sector. Mr O.P. Goyal, councillor from the area, sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for the maintenance of parks from his area developement fund.

Camps: The Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association will organise a series of six blood donation camps at Advanced Paediatric Centre, PGI, from May 22 to July 17. The first camp was organised on Saturday.

Exhibition: The Survey of India, North Western Circle, will hold an exhibition on Satellite Imagery, on May 11 in its office premises at Sector 32 on the occasion of the first National Technology Day. Modern map-making will also be demonstrated.

AMBALA
Held:
The Naggal police has arrested Jatinder Singh, a resident of Kangwal village, on the charge of raping a minor girl. A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered.

FARIDABAD
Health camp:
A free medical camp was organised here on Sunday by the All-India Economical and Social Charitable Research Sansthan. About 1480 persons were examined and medicines were distributed among them.

SIRSA
Assault:
Ramesh Kumar and his wife Maina Devi of Jadhkan village were injured seriously when one, Ram Prakash allegedly attacked them with a sharp-edged weapon. According to informed sources, the accused was in an inebriated state when he attacked the couple.

Villagers' demand: Residents of Pipli, Makha and Asir villages have demanded that their villages be attached with Kalanwali Tehsil as they had to face a lot of inconvenience while visiting Mandi Dabwali which was too far forgetting official work done.

Telephone subscribers: Resentment prevails among telephone subscribers of Subhakhera, Raguana and Badadugha villages as telephones in these villages are reportedly out of order for the past many days. They have warned that in case the faulty lines are not repaired they would launch an agitation.

Encroachment: The Railway police, Mandi Kalanwali, has launched a drive to remove encroachments on government land. An official spokesperson said here on Sunday that a large number of rehris on both sides of railway crossings were removed on Saturday.

Injured: Gopi Ram of Nathusari Chopta village was injured seriously with a Lethal weapon by Pappu of the same village on Saturday. He was admitted to the local civil hospital.

Beaten: Paramjeet Kaur of Phoolo village was allegedly beaten up by Harmeet Singh and his wife Harjeet Kaur on Saturday. A land dispute was stated to be the cause and investigations are on.

Sub-standard seeds: Farmers of this district and its adjoining areas were forced to purchase uncertified and sub-standard seeds of cotton and paddy from the market in the absence of certified seeds. They have alleged that unlicensed shopkeepers were indulging in the business and were charging exorbitant prices. The farmers have demanded that the authorities concerned should supply adequate certified seeds and take action against the guilty.

Recovered: The police has recovered a scooter and three cycles from Sukhdev Singh, a vehicle thief.

SONEPAT
Medical camp:
Over 400 prisoners were examined by a team of specialists of the local civil hospital at a one-day medical camp organised by the district administration on the premises of the district jail on Saturday. Medicines, free of cost, were also distributed on the occasion.

Pay scales: Mr Surinder Singh Rana, Zonal president of the Haryana College Teachers' Union on Sunday hailed the decision of the state government for revising the pay scales of university and college teachers as per the recommendation of the UGC as accepted by the Central Government with effect from January 1,1996. In a press note issued here, he said the demands of the HCTU were pending for the past many years.

Duplicate cassettes: The police has arrested one Azad, an owner of M/s Chiragh Electronics in Mamoon Bhanja Chowk, on the charge of cheating and the violation of the Copyright Act following the recovery of 989 fake and duplicate cassettes from him. Mr K. Selvraj, SSP, told mediapersons here on Sunday that the arrest followed an FIR on behalf of M/s Super Cassettes Limited, Noida, alleging that the culprit had manufactured duplicate and fake cassettes.

Free textbooks: Mr Arun Kapur, senior vice-president of the Atlas Cycle Industries, distributed textbooks free of cost among 800 poor students studying in various educational institutions of the city at a colourful function organised by Dewan Harnam Das Saraswati Devi Trust here on Saturday. Mr Kapur also distributed similar sets of textbooks among 1,000 wards of the workers employed in the Atlas Cycle Industries.top

Fire incidents: MR D. P. Sharma, SP, has directed all police stations to register FIRs of fire incidents in their respective areas. He said from January 1 to May 5.53 incidents of fire took place in this district and FIRs were registered under Sections 285, 435 and 436, IPC.
