100 civilians killed
PRISTINA, (Yugoslavia), May 14 (AFP) — At least 100 civilians were killed and more than 50 seriously injured in a NATO overnight bombing raid that hit a village in southern Kosovo, state agency Tanjug today said.

MUNGER (Bihar), May 14 (PTI) — Seven persons were killed when villagers clashed with a group of abductors at Kharagpur village, about 30 km from here, today. Police Superintendent A.K. Singh said a group of anti-socials abducted a businessman, Ashok Shah, from his brickkiln near Kharagpur and later killed him when he raised an alarm. Villagers rushed to the spot and beat six of them to death, he said.

Pak has Chinese missiles
WASHINGTON, May 14 (PTI) — Pakistan is believed to have developed 10 Ghauri medium range ballistic missiles with a range of 1500 to 1900 km and a 700 kg payload, a defence magazine has said. "Pakistan currently deploys the HAFT-1/1A (80-199 km range), and HAFT 2 (250-300 km) ballistic missiles, and is completing development of the 800 km range HAFT 3 (Shaheen 1) which is assumed to be a local copy of the Chinese M-9," "Military Technology," a magazine published in the USA and Europe said.

JAUNPUR, May 14 (UNI) — High velocity winds of over 100 km per hour and heavy rains left five persons dead, uprooted thousands of trees and disrupted power supply and telecommunication services in the district.

40 taken ill
ETAH (UP), May 14 (UNI) — About 40 persons were hospitalised for food poisoning after partaking of a wedding dinner that was laced with some substance as a supposedly harmless prank in Kasganj town of the district last night. District Magistrate M.K. Gupta said that the incident occurred as some pranksters added the substance to the food without anticipating its fallout.

NEW DELHI, May 14 (PTI) — As many as seven Chief Commissioners and 79 Commissioners of Income Tax were transferred yesterday despite controversy over similar transfers last year. However, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Ravi Kant defended the transfers as "routine" in April-May but said that he did not expect more such transfers around this time of the year.

5 killed in mishap
LUCKNOW, May 14 (UNI) — Five persons were killed and three injured when the truck carrying them fell into a river in Hardoi district last night. Lucknow Deputy Inspector-General of Police Arun Kumar Gupta told UNI here that the victims were going to Hardoi from Shahjahanpur. While three of them died on the spot, two succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

7 cops hurt
HYDERABAD, May 14 (PTI) — The police burst tear-gas shells and fired in the air to disperse two groups, who clashed over the issue of inauguration of a high mast street light in the old city here today. The police had to make a lathi charge to bring the situation under control after members of the Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and the Majlis Bachao Tehreek (NBT) resorted to heavy stone-throwing in the Kalapathar area over the issue. An ACP, SI five constables were injured in the stone-pelting.

1 cr ticketless
NEW DELHI, May 14 (UNI) — More than one crore persons in various parts of the country were detected by the railway staff last year for travelling improperly and without tickets. The number of such persons detected in 1997-98 was about ninety lakh, an official release said here today. While Rs 138.6 crore was recovered as fines in 1998-99, Rs 112.65 crore was realised the previous year, the release said.Top
