New DSP:
Mr Sat Pal on Monday took over as DSP, Balachaur sub-Division in place of Mr Raj Pal Singh Sandhu.

GURDASPUR
Councillor killed:
Mr Surinder Kumar, nagar councillor, was killed on the spot when the truck in which he was travelling rammed into a tree near Panjar village, 5 km from here, on Monday.

PATHANKOT
Accident:
Two scooterists, Suresh Kumar (24) of Kuther village and Ashok Kumar (22), were killed in a collision between Army tanker and a scooter on Sunday on the Defence road. The third, Surinder Kumar, who also accompanied them, was injured. The police has registered a case.

PATIALA
Promoted:
Dr O. P. Aggarwal has been promoted Associate Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College, Patiala, against a post recently upgraded by the Punjab Government, an official release said.

Camp: A free homoeopathic medical camp was organised by the Confederation of Homoeopathic Patiala, in collaboration with State Bank of Patiala, Rajindra Hospital branch, at Gurdwara Sahib Shri Teg Bahadur, Bahadurgarh, on Saturday. A team of doctors headed by Dr K C Batish, Member, Council of Homoeopathic System of Medicine, Punjab, examined more than 300 patients. The camp was inaugurated by Mr S.S. Sehgal, Assistant General Manager, State Bank of Patiala.

Contest results: The Rotary Club ( Greater) organised Hira Harsarup Singh Pathak Memorial Inter-School Declamation Contest on Sunday. As many as 12 schools participated. Neeru Kamboj of Our Lady of Fatima School, Ashish Sehgal of Sri Aurvindo International School and Dushyant Singla of Atma Ram Kumar Sabha School won first, second and third prizes, respectively. Mrs Aprajita Malhotra, Principal, Government Bikram College of Commerce, distributed the prizes.

Adventure club: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Education Adventure Club: Patron — Mr Sohan Lal; President — Mr Surmukh Singh; Adviser — Mr Pritam Singh Chhabra; Vice-Presidents — Mr H.C. Club meeting: The general body meeting of the International Student Club was organised at Student Centre, Punjab University, on Tuesday. The decisions to hold a fashion show in September, to open branches in Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore and to work for promotion of Indian cultural activities were taken. The calendar for the new academic session would be finalised at the next meeting, scheduled for June 13.

Gurdwara sabha: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sector 37-C Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha: President — Mr Amrik Singh; Vice-President — Mr Kundhan Singh; General Secretary — Mr Amrit Singh Chaudhary; Organising Secretary — Mr Gurcharan Singh Mundra; and Cashier — Mr Niranjan Singh.

Camp: A ten-day camp for adolescents started at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here on Tuesday. Dr M.R. Chilana, Professor of Education NCERT, laid down action points for children and stressed that learning, living and loving should be the major goals in life. Mr D.S. Bedi, Principal of the school, highlighted the contribution of the school in individual and social development.

Mandir committee: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sector 12 Shri Hari Mandir Committee Welfare Society: President — Mr Amar Singh; Vice-President — Ms C. Mohini Lakhanpal; General Secretary — Mr Mukesh Kumar; and Cashier — Mr Surinder Kumar Gupta.

Exhibition: An exhibition of paintings was organised on the concluding day of a ten-day workshop on fabric painting, glass painting and pot painting at Divya Public School, Sector 47, here on Tuesday. The workshop was conducted by Ms Uma Pathak, a hobby class instructor. The prizes for the best paintings were given away by the Principal of the school, Mr Rattan Singh.

FARIDABAD
Drowned:
Shravan Kumar (19), a resident of Pratapgarh village, was drowned in a canal near Sohna. The body which entangled in weeds in the canal was taken out.

SHAHABAD
Announced:
Mr Vaidya Kapur Chand Sharma, State Minister for Industrial Training, Vocational Studies and Civil Aviation, Haryana, has lauded the role of DAV institutions in the field of education in the country. Speaking at the annual function of the local DAV Centenary Public School on Sunday, he announced a grant of Rs 51,000 for the school.

SIRSA
Padayatra:
Mr Gurdeep Singh Saini, spokesman of the Haryana Government Ad hoc Teacher Sangthan, said here on Tuesday that the sangthan had decided to hold padayatra in the state from May 21 in support of their demand of regularisation of their services. The yatra will reach Chandigarh on May 31 and teachers will hold a rally in front of the office of the Director, Higher Education, Haryana.

Six held: The police busted a gang of thieves here on Monday with the arrest of six members of the gang, Mr B.S. Sandhu, SP, said here on Tuesday. The police recovered stolen goods and pistol from their possession.

One killed: In a road accident on Sunday, a brick-kiln owner of Ding, Mr Madan Lal (35), was killed and Rajinder (32), who accompanied him, was injured when the car in which they were travelling rammed into a standing trolley near Bajekan village in the district. The injured was admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

Camp: A five-day training camp of anganwari workers organised at the local Government Middle School for Girls was concluded on Friday. As many as 68 workers from 35 villages of Oddhan participated.

Cases settled: As many as 100 complaints were solved in an open darbar held at Patwar Bhavan here on Monday. The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Avtar Singh. Mr Neeraja Shekhar, ADC, Mr B.S. Sandhu, SP, and Mr Inder Singh, SDM were also present.top

BILASPUR
Sentenced:
Mr D K Sharma, Chief Judicial Magistrate, has sentenced Sukhiya Ram, a shopkeeper, of Nanawan village to six months imprisonment and fined him Rs 1,000 for selling adulterated "saboot urad". In another case, the CJM fined him Rs 500 and sentenced him for one day imprisonment for selling eatables and food stuffs without licence.

Demand raised: The Elder Citizens Association has expressed resentment that though the Chief Minister has announced 10 per cent additional dearness allowance instalment for government employees from January 1, 1999, which would be paid from June 1, 1999, yet this benefit has not been announced for pensioners of the state. Association General Secretary R.L. Sharma said here on Monday that the association had demanded that government should release 10 per cent DA to pensioners also from January 1,1999.

JAWALAMUKHI
Camp:
As many as 17 of the 50 cases were settled in a camp held at Nahlian village in Dehra subdivision of Kangra district on Monday. The SDM, Mr S.S. Chambyal, was present on the occasion.

Inaugurated:
The first internet PCO was inaugurated here on Monday by Mr S.C. Chandok, Chief General Manager, HP Telecom circle, on the occasion of World Telecom Day.

Memorandum:
The Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University Teachers Association met the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, on Sunday under the chairmanship of Dr N.R. Kalia, President, and demanded the release of the UGC scales. They submitted a memorandum to him regarding the demands. He assured the deputation that the scales would be released soon.
