AMRITSAR
Appointed:
Dr Tarlok Singh Benipal has been appointed head of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department of Guru Nanak Dev University, according to a press note issued here on Thursday.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Lok Adalat:
Mr V.K. Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, organised a Lok Adalat in his office on Thursday. Most of the problems were solved on the spot. He said on every Friday a revenue Lok Adalat would be organised at the block-level and on every Thursday a sangat darshan would be organised at the district-level.

GURDASPUR
One held:
The Sujanpur police arrested Sat Pal on Friday for his alleged involvement in theft of horses and mares from Himachal Pradesh. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the police recovered 13 horses and mares from his residence.

HOSHIARPUR
One held:
The police arrested Balwinder Singh, alias Bittu, of Falahi village and recovered one revolver and two cartridges from his possession on Thursday. The police said during interrogation he admitted that he along with with his accomplice snatched Rs 5000 from Rakesh Sud, a local merchant of Adda Mahilpur, at gun point on May 17.

Liquor seized: The police arrested Amit Nayar, a resident of Mohalla Bahadurpur on Thursday and seized 60 bottles of IMFL from him. After interrogation the police recovered 120 bottles of liquor. The police also arrested Arun Kumar, alias Lovely, a resident of Mohalla Missram, and seized 384 bottles of IMFL from him.

KAPURTHALA
Clerk suspended:
Bhupinder Singh, clerk, Punjab Excise and Taxation Department, has been suspended on a charge of defrauding the department in its salary bill. The Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner Mr Surjit Singh, said here on Friday that he had drawn excess staff salary in November and April.

LUDHIANA
Training:
The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Punjab Agricultural University, will organise a free training camp on care of dogs on June 3.

MOGA
Wheat procurement:
The government procuring agencies have started lifting of wheat bags lying in the local grain market and the entire stocks will be lifted within a couple of days, according to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kulbir Singh Kang, here on Friday. He said the target of wheat arrivals in the Moga markets was fixed at 3.37 tonnes.

Elected:

ROPAR
Murder:
Mr Sarmukh Singh of Mianpur village was murdered on Thursday when he was going to irrigate the fields. According to the police, he was allegedly strangled by Sikander Singh of Thona village and others. The police has registered a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC on a complaint of Mr Nasib Singh, father of the deceased.

ZIRAKPUR

Function: Residents of Zirakpur, Bartana, Lohgarh, Himmatgarh, Bishangarh, Bishanpura, Dhakoli and shopkeepers of Zirakpur will organise a function for merging their villages to form a nagar panchayat, on Saturday. Capt. Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister of Punjab, will be the chief guest. The minister will also inaugurate a 66 kv power station in Bhabhat village.

Rally: Mr Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, former Union Minister and President of Lok Bhalai Party, will address a rally in Zirakpur on Monday. He would also announce party's policies for the forthcoming elections, said Mr Bipanjit Singh Vincy, Convenor and General Secretary of the party.top



Haryana briefs
FATEHABAD
Poppy seized:
The Bhattu police has arrested Dharambir and Rakesh and recovered a stolen jeep from them. Mr Rajbir Deswal, SSP, said the police seized poppy husk from Dharambir Singh and a case had been registered against them.

Eight held: The Tohana police arrested eight persons, including patwari, on Thursday for gambling. The arrested include Prem Parkash, Sunil, Rajesh Kumar, Ravinder Kumar, Inder Kumar, Ramesh Kumar, Mahabir Prasad and Baljit Singh. The police has registered a case against them.

HISAR
Sentenced:
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr J.B. Sharma, sentenced Jagdish of Julani village and Krishan of Petwar village on Thursday to life imprisonment for murdering of two brothers, Satbir and Karambir. The court, however, acquitted three persons, Jile Singh, Balwan and Ramesh Kumar. A fine of Rs 23,000 was imposed on Jagdish and Rs 20,000 on Krishan.

KAITHAL
Convention:
A district convention of the Haryana Karamchari Maha Sangh and the Sarv Karamchari Sangh was concluded here on Thursday. Mr Poonam, Senior Vice-President, Sarv Karamchari Sangh, and Mr O.P Yadav, leader of the Karamchari Maha Sangh, condemned the state Government for not accepting their long-pending demands.

ROHTAK
Two injured:
Deshraj, a jeweller, allegedly shot at his son, Subhash, and tried to commit suicide by shooting himself at the Railway road here on Thursday, according to the police. Both were admitted to PGIMS hospital where their condition is stated to be stable.

SIRSA
Three held:
The police arrested three persons on Wednesday who were allegedly involved in the murder of Manohar Lal. Mr B.S Sandhu, SSP, said Manohar Lal was murdered on May 14. The arrested were identified as Sunder Bishnoi, Balram Bishnoi and Sandeep Kumar.

SONEPAT
Convention:
The Sarv Karamchari Sangh, Haryana, will hold a two-day conference from Saturday at Karnal. A spokesman of the sangh told mediapersons here on Friday that the delegates from all over the state would expected to participate in the sammelan.

Case registered: The body of was found hanging in her-in-laws house at Mundlana village on Thursday. On a complaint of her parents, the police has registered a case against her husband, Surinder and her mother-in-law, Sathiro. However, no arrest has been made so far.

Killed: Mr Ram Lal, a resident of Sikka Colony, was knocked down by a vehicle and killed on the Sonepat-Bahalgarh road on Thursday. The police has registered a case.

Suicide cases: Ranbir (25) committed suicide on Thursday by consuming poison at Bari village, 15 km from here. According to the police, he took this step after a family quarrel. In another incident, Dayanand (30) committed suicide on Thursday by consuming poison at Pipli Khera village, 19 km from here.top

DHARAMSALA
Programme:
Ranbheri-99, a programme, was organised at War Memorial here to pay homage to martyrs. The programme was jointly organised by the Tourism Department, the district administration and the Public Relations Department. Speaking on the occasion, the Divisional Commissioner, Mr Lalji Singh, said Kangra district had played an important role during freedom struggle.

MANDI
Scheme launched:
Bal Vidya Sankalp Yojna, a scheme sponsored by the Centre, was launched here on Friday by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Prabodh Saxena. He said the Government had released Rs 1 crore for the construction of 100 primary schools in the district.

NAHAN
Threat:
The Gramin Panchayat Chowkidar Union of Sirmour district at a meeting held here on Wednesday threatened to start hunger strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in case their demands were not accepted. The association also extended their support to panchayat chowkidars in the state who were on strike.

PALAMPUR
Suicide:
Sonu (17), a class X student of Basdi village, under Dehra subdivision committed suicide after consuming poison on Wednesday. According to police sources, he was rushed to Dehra Civil Hospital in a critical condition but could not be saved. A case has been registered and the reasons for suicide are being investigated.
