Suicide:
Bakshish Singh, who had allegedly killed his wife under the influence of liquor and buried the body in his house, committed suicide when members of his family informed the police after a foul smell emanated from the place. A case has been registered.

GARSHANKAR
Release grant:
Prof Vimal Vij, President and Prof Jaswant Singh, members of the executive of the PCCTU, have demanded immediate release of Rs 24 crore as grant which was agreed to at a meeting of with the federation of managements. Due to the callous attitude of the government, college teachers have not received their salaries for the past four months. Besides, they demanded the release of bi-monthly grant to private colleges, being withheld since February.

HOSHIARPUR
Cremated:
The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Ravi Bhushan, who was found dead at a rest house near Nakodar yesterday was cremated with full state honour on Thursday. Cremation was largely attended.

PHILLAUR
Camp:
Punjab National Bank, GT Road, Goraya, organised a free medical check-up for poor students on the foundation day of the Goraya branch of the bank. Medicines were distributed free of cost. A similar camp was also organised at JSFH Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar district, on Wednesday.

Dharna: Members of the Punjab Government Employees Residents Welfare Sangharsh Committee, Sector 39, will stage a dharna in front of the Punjab ministers residence complex in the sector on May 30. According to Mr N.S. Uppal, General Secretary of the committee, their main demand was the withdrawal of the hike in house rent.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sanitary Inspectors Association: Chairman — Mr Gian Chand; President — Mr Partap Singh; Senior Vice-President — Mr V.K. Dogra; Vice-President — Mr Om Parkash; General Secretary — Mr R.R. Yadav; Joint Secretary — Mr B.K. Sharma; and Treasurer — Mr Naresh.

Function:
Chetna, a welfare society, will organise a seminar and exhibition on "Keep Our Water Resources Clean" in Ram Mandir, near railway crossing, on Friday at 3 pm. Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, Deputy Commissioner, Patiala, will be the chief guest and Mr S.S. Sidhu, SDM, Dera Bassi, will preside over the function, said Ms Surya Pandit, Secretary General, Chetna.

KHARAR
Distributed: A sum of Rs 32.49 lakh was distributed among 641 persons in the sub-division till May 24 under the Shagun scheme. Mr Amarjit Singh Dhindsa, while addressing mediapersons on Thursday, said no case was pending in the sub-division.

HISAR
Power supply:
The "experiment" of supplying round-the-clock electricity started by the Dakshin Haryana Bijlee Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN) from May 18 has been a success, Mr A.K. Singh Deputy Commissioner, said here on Thursday. He said areas were given three-phased power supply without any scheduled power cut. He said before the start of the "experiment", the consumption of power was 28 lakh units per day which rose to 33.34 lakh units a day within two days.

PANIPAT
Lions club:
The following have been nominated office-bearers of the Lions Club International (region VI) here: Region Chairman — Dr Vinay Goyal; Zonal Chairmen — Mr G.B. Singh (zone- I), Mr Ved Parkash (zone II); — Mr Ramesh Sharma (zone-III); and Region Secretary — Mr Sunil Chawla.

Appointed: Mr Navdeep Virk has been appointed Block Youth Congress President here, according to Mr Sanjeev Sharma, District Youth Congress President.

Financial help: The local Red Cross Society has provided financial help and medicines free of cost to eight persons injured in last week’s robbery at Korgiwallah village and Bishanpura.

Seminar: A seminar on "Role of Theatre in Education" was organised by Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School recently, Mr Pran Sabharwal presented a paper at the seminar.

Rath yatra: A "chetna rath yatra" organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha which started from Hussainiwala on May 23 reached Nabha on Wednesday. It was welcomed by the district unit of the BJP there.

SIRSA
Supply restored:
Mr R C Bakshi, Superintending Engineer, PWD, said here on Thursday that rationing imposed on the supply of drinking water in the city has been withdrawn and adequate drinking water was being supplied to residents.

Arrested: The local police arrested Balbir and his wife, Om Pati, under Sections 323, 506 and 34, IPC, on the complaint of Santro Devi, a widow, who accused the couple of beating her. All three are residents of the New Housing Board Colony.

Suicide: Simerjeet Kaur, wife of Gurdeep Singh, of Musahibwala village in the district committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday. According to the complaint lodged by Simerjeet’s brother, Harjinder, his sister was being tortured by her husband for not being able to conceive. A case under Sections 306 and 34, IPC has been registered.

Police remand: Pawan Mittal, arrested in connection with the suicide case of Ramesh Chawla, was remanded in police custody for two days on Wednesday. He is one of the five persons booked under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471, IPC. Earlier his bail plea was also rejected.

SONEPAT
Drowned:
Two boys, aged 12, were reportedly drowned in the Yamuna near Memarpur village, 30 km from here, on Wednesday. According to the police, the two had gone to the river for taking a bath.

Funds utilised: The District Rural Development agency (DRDA) has utilised Rs 1.33 crore out of the allocated amount of Rs 1.39 crore on various schemes under the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP) in this district during 1998-99. This was stated by Mr P K Mahapatra, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over the meeting of the governing body of the DRDA here on Wednesday.

Robbed: Mr Naresh Kumar, a liquor contractor, was allegedly robbed of some cash by two motorcycle borne robbers at gunpoint on the Sonepat-Jahri road near Jahri village, 5 km from here on Wednesday. He was on his way to a distillery. When the incident happened.top

Assaulted:
Mr Shayamlal Chaudhary, President, Yuvak Mandal, Saikali village and another youth leader, Mr Karam Singh, of the same village have alleged that Shyamlal, a police constable, and Padamlal and Jagdish of Bohau village attacked and injured them. They said this was the consequence of their complaint against financial irregularities in the implementation of construction work regarding a watershed project in the area.
