M. Rajendran is Orissa Governor
NEW DELHI, Nov 11 (UNI) — Former Parliamentary Affairs Secretary M. Rajendran will be the new Governor of Orissa. At present the Andhra Pradesh Governor has the additional charge of Orissa. The government has made the new appointment in view of the large-scale relief work to be carried out in one-third area of the state, sources said here today.

Electrification scam
PATNA, Nov 11 (PTI) — The Centre has decided on a CBI probe into the role of the Central Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) officials in a scam involving fake declaration of thousands of Bihar villages as electrified, according to the Opposition leader in the state Assembly, Mr Sushil Kumar Modi. Releasing copies of an official note of the Union Minister for Power P.R. Kumaramangalam for a CBI probe, Mr Modi today alleged at a press conference here that more than Rs 2,000 crore was involved in the rural electrification scam.

Yeltsin's visit
MOSCOW, Nov 11 (UNI) — Russian President Boris Yeltsin will not visit New Delhi this year, Voice of Russia reported last night. According to observers here, the decision was taken as Mr Yeltsin continued to be under medical care and his moving out of Russia was not likely in the coming weeks keeping in view the December elections for the Duma. Earlier, Mr Yeltsin has planned to pay an official visit to New Delhi in December this year.

Quake hits Turkey
ISTANBUL, Nov 11 (Reuters) — A moderate earthquake rocked western Turkey today, shaking the commercial capital Istanbul where scores of world leaders are to gather for a security summit next week. Anatolian news agency said 88 persons were injured across the country’s northwest when the tremor, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, hit the region, still recovering from a devastating quake in August.

Jailed MLA
BANGALORE, Nov 11 (UNI) — The imprisoned independent legislator, Mr Ravikanth Patil, who was re-elected to the Karnataka Assembly took the oath today. Mr Patil, who was under judicial custody after he surrendered before the Sholapur police (Maharashtra) on July 1 in connection with a rape case, had constested and won the elections from prison. He has been released on interim bail.
