Ganguly fashions thrilling win GWALIOR, Nov 11 (UNI, PTI) Saurav Ganguly was on a song today and his explosive unbeaten century coupled with the gentle but tight medium pace bowling brought a thrilling 14-run victory for India in the third one-day international against New Zealand here today. After an initial stupor in the morning, Indian batting came into reckoning, largely due to Gangulys dazzling unbeaten 153 and his 70-ball unbroken 119-run sixth wicket stand with Robin Singh, setting a target of 262 for the visitors. The two New Zealand openers, Craig Spearman and Nathan Astle, began on a breezy note and the way they batted it looked they would overhaul the target without much sweat. Indian seamers Debashish Mohanty and Ajit Agarkar, replacing the rested duo of Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad, had little effect on the two batsmen as runs started flowing. They were particularly harsh on Mohanty who was hit for 25 runs in his first spell of four overs while Agarkar gave away 22 runs in his first six overs. At the end of the 10th over, the Kiwis were cruising at 51 without damage. It was only when Man of the Match Saurav Ganguly came into the attack with his gentle seam bowling that brakes could be applied at the scoring rate. With able support from Chopra, who in the final analysis emerged the most successful with three wickets for 32 runs, Ganguly was instrumental again in sending the visitors to despair. Ganguly earlier blasted three sixes and 18 fours in a stunning 150-ball knock and produced a hurricane 119-run unfinished sixth wicket stand with Robin Singh (45 not out off 34 balls). Ganguly, whose improvised shots stood out in the final stages, spoiled the party for the Kiwis who had kept a tight leash on the innings after reducing India to 142 for five. The stylish opener with fellow left-hander Robin Singh brought up 114 runs in the last 10 overs to thunderous cheers from the packed Roop Singh Stadium after India looked doubtful of even crossing the 200-run mark. The Kiwi seamers made good use of early moisture in the atmosphere as skipper Sachin Tendulkar, fresh from his mammoth 186 not out at Hyderabad, fell for a mere one run from 23 deliveries. Rahul Dravid (14), Ajay Jadeja (15), pinch-hitter Nikhil Chopra (15) and Vijay Bharadwaj (2) could do little to boost the score before the indefatigable Robin Singh gave Ganguly the ideal support to go after the bowling. The Chris Pair bowled good line in their first spells Cairns gave 19 off six overs while Drum conceded 12 off his five as India found the going tough. After the fall of Tendulkar and Dravid taking time to settle down, it looked as though India would just manage to cross the 200 runs mark. Indias 50 came in the 16th over and after Dravid (14 -31b, 51m) departed, the hosts reached 64 for two in 20 overs. Gangulys 50 came mid-way through the Indian innings with Chopra at the other end. The Bengal batsman then changed gears and opened his blade. He took an aerial route through mid-on off Alex Tait but the ball fell just inside the boundary line. Ganguly was lucky to escape a hard chance when bowler Drum got his hand to a full-blooded shot. The southpaw did not keep the expectant crowd waiting and raced to his 100 without loitering nervously in the nineties. All-rounder Robin Singh at the other end was in good touch as he pulled Astles off-stump delivery to the cover boundary as the Kiwi bowler, who otherwise took two wickets, was hit all over the ground. With just five overs left and India at a modest 185 for five, Robin Singh and Ganguly started lofting and driving the ball and runs came at a brisk pace. Both put Indias 200 on the board in the 47th over and then went after Cairns and Drum, realising 55 runs in the last three overs. Robin Singh lofted Cairns for a six and after Ganguly had survived a run-out chance, smote one to long as the bowler conceded 19 runs in an over. The duo remained unconquered to set a challenging asking rate of 5.24 runs per over on an easy wicket. SCOREBOARD India Ganguly not out 153 New Zealand: |
JCT play Churchill Brothers tomorrow MUMBAI, Nov 11 (PTI) Goan clubs Churchill Brothers and Salgaocar start as favourites when the Rovers Cup Football Tournament semi-finals get underway at Cooperage here tomorrow. In the first match, Churchill take on JCT Mills, Phagwara, while Salgaocar meet local team Mahindra and Mahindra in the second match on Saturday. Missing from the last four are last years champions Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) and the two glamour teams, FC Kochin and Bangladesh league champions Mohammedan Sporting, Dhaka, who had fuelled high expectations before the tournament. Air-India, the other team in the quarter-final league, made a rather quiet exit from Group A. Salgaocar and Churchill Brothers topped Group A and Group B, respectively. Churchill had won the Goa professional league recently ahead of Salgaocar and from the form they have shown, a title clash here between the two cannot be ruled out. JCT were second in Group A where they went down 1-2 to Salgaocar. They had met Churchill in the summit clash here two years ago and won by a first-half goal. Mahindras, the Group B runners-up, have not been consistent in the past few years, but have played well here so far, scoring a big 4-1 win over BMFC and two draws, and are capable of giving a tough fight to Salgaocar. Salgaocars good showing comes despite the absence of veteran Bruno Coutinho, who, along with teammate Augustine Rodrigues was injured in a motorcycle accident in Goa. However, Coutinhos absence was not felt in the mid-field as Alvito DCunha, who plays as a forward, came down whenever needed and played more as a play-maker than a striker. |
Lewis, Holyfield set for rematch LAS VEGAS, Nov 11 (AFP) US law-makers joined Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield in trying to heal boxings black eye even as the fighters prepared for their world heavyweight unification rematch. In the aftermath of the controversial Lewis-Holyfield draw last March in New York, the US House of Representatives approved a federal boxing reform Bill on Monday that senate leaders have agreed to adopt. As a result, US President Bill Clinton could sign the anti-corruption measures into law before Lewis and Holyfield step into the ring for their sold-out showdown here on Saturday. Britains Lewis was robbed of a career-defining triumph over Holyfield in March, landing three times as many punches by using superior reach and size to tactical advantage yet failing to win Holyfields two crowns. Although it was pretty evident I won the first fight, there is still that emptiness there, Lewis said. People are saying you are the champ but I still dont have the two belts Im supposed to have. This next fight with Evander will open the door for my legacy. Hopefully this fight will wipe out the bad taste from the first fight. An impressive bout and just verdict combined with federal fairness safeguards would help a heavyweight division weakened by Mike Tysons jail terms and lackluster fights, controversial promoter Don King and federal corruption charges facing top officials of a major sanctioning body. International Boxing Federation President Bob Lee and others allegedly took payoffs from promoters to alter rankings and give certain fighters title bouts as well as other acts of corruption. An IBF-appointed judge who had declared bankruptcy favoured Holyfield in March. She gave talkative promoter king, who paid all judge salaries and expenses, his best possible payday with a rematch. The Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act would ban bribes to sanctioners and promoter conflicts of interest, force disclosure of contract terms, ban long-term deals to assure title bouts and require state panels to name judges for all fights. Such a law already exists here. The Nevada Athletic Commission selected Mitch Halpern as referee for Saturdays main event with veteran judges Jerry Roth, Bill Graham and Chuck Giampa handling scorecard duties. World Boxing Council champion Lewis, 34, is 34-1 with one drawn and 27 knockouts. World Boxing Association and IBF champion Holyfield, 37, is 36-3 with one drawn and 25 knockouts. Each sanctioning body named one of the three judges in the draw. South Africas Stan Christodoulou saw Lewis a 116-113 victory. American Eugenia Williams gave Holyfield a 115-113 verdict. Englands Larry OConnell had the fight a 115-115 draw. |
Laila outpunches opponent CHESTER, USA, Nov 11 (AP) Laila Alis second fight was much longer than her first. The result was the same. The 21-year-old daughter of Muhammad Ali stopped Shadina Pennybaker of Pittsburgh with three seconds left in their four-round bout last night before about 2,000 fans at the Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort. Ali said in the days leading up to the fight that she would knock out Pennybaker, a 28-year-old accounting student from Pittsburgh who was making her pro debut. Yet she was unable to land any solid blows early and she appeared to plan out every move. Early in the fourth round, Ali bloodied her opponents lip and forced a standing-eight count with a series of blows to Pennybakers head. Ali finished with a
flurry of left-right combinations that sent Pennybaker
reeling into the corner and forced the referee to stop
the fight. |

Punjab with skipper Vikram Rathore, in-form Pankaj Dharmani, Reetinder Sodhi and Harminder Jugnu expect to come good against Delhi which is quite a formidable side. In the third encounter here at Ludhiana on November 5 Punjab outplayed Jammu and Kashmir by 48 runs. Similarly, Delhi too have scored authentic wins in their previous fixtures. Stunning 9-under by Vijay FARIDABAD, Nov 11 It was an amazing day at the Rs 5 lakh Tiger Sports Marketing Open as the Wills Sport Indian Golf Tour pros wreaked havoc on the course. Vijay Kumar unleashed his full fury when he shattered the course record with an awe-inspiring round of nine-under 63. But that was still not enough to make him the leader as Mukesh Kumar returned a eight-under 64 card to take the honours. And to top it all, Gaurav Ghei produced a stunning round of five-under 67 which was studded with three eagles and marred by a single double bogey. Vijays round not only bettered the course record, but was also the lowest ever in India since the formation of the Professional Golfers Association of India (PGAI) Tour. The previous lowest was eight-under 64 by Ali Sher during the 1997 Hindu Open at Cosmopolitan Club course, Chennai, and by Englands Edward Fryatt during the 1997 Wills Indian Open. At the 6,129 yard, par-72 course, Mukesh led the field with a two-day aggregate of 14-under 130, another first on the PGAI Tour for two-day aggregate. Vijay was two strokes behind at 12-under 132 following his first round three-under 69. Overnight leader Feroz had an off day with a one-over 73, while Amritinder Singh took the third place at nine-under 135 after a three-under 69 round today. The cut was applied at ten-over 154 and 53 pros made it to the money-making round. Mukesh is currently enjoying the form every golfer dreams of. Even though his normally inmaculate approach shots were a bit wayward today, he more than made up for it with splendid putting, completing the round with just 25 putts, including three from 12-15 feet range for birdies. He made an eagle on the par-5 second, using the 3-wood twice to reach seven feet short of the pin before making the putt. His only bogey came on that very hole when playing it as the 11th on this beautiful nine-hole course. The Wills Northern Open finished the round in style with birdies on 16th, 17th and 18th holes for an eight-under card. It will be difficult over the next two days especially with Vijay breathing down my neck. Had he not been around, I would have had no problems predicting myself as the winner. But the way I am playing right now, it will be a tough fight over the next two days, he said later. Vijay demolished the course with his powerful hitting. He began with a bogey when he missed a three-footer par putt for his only blemish of the day. Thereafter, he was ruthless. He made an eagle on the 465-yard par-5 third, reaching the green with a driver and 9-iron and completing with a 12-footer putt. Even Mukesh, a relatively long-hitter on the Tour, required a driver and four-iron to reach this green. On the 6th, he made a 30-footer birdie putt. On the 196-yard par-4 8th, he went over the green with his three-wood tee shot, and then almost made the 20-footer putt from the fringe of the green for an eagle. The ball stopped just inches short of the cup. The Hindu Open champion began his back nine with four birdies in a row and then added two more on the 16th and 18th to finish nine-under for the day. What made the difference was that after many days I completed the round in just 26 putts. My hitting has always been this good. It feels good to shoot such a low score as I was feeling a little frustrated that I wasnt scoring well despite hitting the ball so well, said a modest Vijay after the round. Gaurav eagled the 9th as well as the 18th holes after driving to just eight feet off the green and then chipping in on both occasions. His other eagle came on the 12th where he hit a driver and five-iron and made the 25-feet putt. Ghei, who is sponsored by India Cements, also made an out-of-the-blue double bogey when he his tee shot on the 16th hole took a bad bounce and went out of bounds. Scores (after 36 holes):
130 Mukesh Kumar (66,64), 132 Vijay Kumar (69,63), 135
Amritinder Singh (66,69), 138 Feroz Ali (65,73), 141

Woods two strokes off the lead NEW DELHI, Nov 11 World number one Tiger Woods of the USA began the defence of his Johnnie Walker Classic title strongly today, with a four-under-par 68 to lie two strokes off the lead. Woods, chasing his fifth tournament victory in a row, reeled off five easy birdies at the Westin Resort Ta Shee, but bogied the par-three 18th, after nearly making an incredible sand save. Michael Campbell of New Zealand, Englands Jeremy Robinson and Swedens Johan Skold lead the $ 1.3 million Johnie Walker Classic after firing six-under-par 66s. American Ryder Cup star Jim Furyk, and Austalians Peter Senior and Nick OHern carded 67s in what is the first ever tri-sanctioned event between the European, Australian and Asian PGA Tours. Also on four under with Woods are Philip Price of Wales and Swedens Marten Olander. Woods, 23, covered the front nine in four-under-par 32 after birdies on the third, fifth, sixth and ninth. On the inward stretch, however, the birdies dried up until he holed a 12 footer on 17th. His only dropped shot of the day came on the 233-yard 18th, where his tee shot found a green side bunker. His ball plugged under the lip giving him practically no shot. Amazingly, however, the American splashed out to 12 feet, but narrowly missed the par putt. It definitely doesnt make me feel very good, said Woods of the bogey. I hit a great bunker shot though. Woods beat South African Ernie Els in last years Johnnie Walker Classic at Blue Canyon Country Club in Thailand, after a thrilling sudden-death play-off. The American came from eight strokes behind Els on the final day to force a play-off, and then triumphed with a birdie on the second extra-hole. |
