New Russian envoy to India
MOSCOW, Nov 18 (UNI) Mr Alexander Kadankin, a
senior diplomat will be the new Russian Ambassador to
India, sources said here today. An official announcement
is expected to be made shortly. Mr Kadankin replaces Mr
Albert Chernishev who has completed four years in Delhi
and has done much of the spadework for a long-term
agreement between India and Russia. The agreement to be
signed early next year will cover the first 10 years of
the millennium.WB
Governor
NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (PTI) Noted industrialist and
former BJP MP Viren Shah will be the new Governor of West
Bengal, Chief Minister Jyoti Basu said today. Mr Basu
told reporters after a 15-minute meeting with Home
Minister L.K. Advani that the Union Government had
proposed Mr Shah as the new Governor and "it is
acceptable to me".
50 Nigerians
killed
LAGOS, Nov 18 (Reuters) Up to 50 persons were
killed in fighting between two southern Nigerian
communities over pipes donated by an oil firm hoping to
foster better relations, local papers said today. The
state-owned Daily Times said the dead included four
policemen in the fighting since Tuesday over the gift of
pipes from royal Dutch/shell in the Isoko district.
Lakhubhai case
NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (UNI) A CBI court today
dismissed a petition seeking the closure of the $ 100,000
Lakhubhai Pathak cheating case against former Prime
Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Chandraswami and his aide
K.N. Aggarwal. Chandraswami had sought the closure of the
case in the light of a Supreme Court ruling that
examination of evidence in criminal cases should be
completed within two years. Additional Sessions Judge
Ajit Bharihoke said he was dismissing the petition as a
response was being awaited from the Canadian authorities.
CPM workers hurt
KANNUR, Nov 18 (UNI) In a fresh outbreak of
political clashes, four CPM workers and an RSS activist
were injured in separate incidents at Thalassery in
Kerala during the past 24 hours. Police sources said
Thalassery area committee member of the CPM V.K. Suresh
Babu was attacked by suspected RSS activists.
Cyclone toll
9,574
BHUBANESWAR, Nov 18 (PTI) The death toll in the
October 29 super cyclone in Orissa has risen to 9,574
even as the state governments efforts to procure
more polythene sheets to provide shelter to the homeless
continues. The toll had risen by just one since yesterday
with the lone casualty reported from Balasore district,
official sources said. Reports of deaths were coming in
even three weeks after the cyclone hit the coast.
