India get past Japan 3-1

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (PTI) — India began their title hunt in the Asia Cup Hockey Championship in an unimpressive manner, defeating lowly Japan 3-1 after struggling to come to terms with the feeble opposition here today.

The reigning Asian Games gold medallists failed to sparkle in their quest for a maiden title before Dilip Tirkey, Gagan Ajit Singh and Dinesh Nayak struck to enable India claim full points from the inaugural group “A” league tie at the Bukit Jalil stadium.

The Indian team failed to rise above the average, not showing an urgency that could have seen some score goals and never fully shook off their defensive approach.

They eventually came off winners only due to some good penalty corner conversions by star defender Dilip Tirkey and Dinesh Nayak and a field goal by young forward Gagan Ajit Singh following fine spadework done by half back Baljit Singh Saini.

India began with veteran Dhanraj Pillay, recalled into the side to bolster the frontline, Deepak Thakur and Baljit Singh Dhillon and Senthil in the frontline. But the combine failed to provide the much needed thrust for goals.

Pillay missed a chance in the third minute after snatching the ball from a defender when he weaved past the goalkeeper but failed to slot the ball into the empty goal.

The seasoned campaigner was a bit off-colour and failed to shake off the tight marking resorted to by the defence.

India clinched the lead in the fourth minute off the very first penalty corner they forced. Tirkey, the bulwark in the Indian defence, slammed in a second rebound to put India up.

The goal should have spurred them on, but surprisingly they played defensively and let the Japanese take control time and again.

Even skipper Baljit Dhillon played a withdrawn role, trying to spur the half line where experienced Ramandeep Singh and Thirumalvalavan played much below their potential.

Only Sukhbir Singh Gill showed some control in the midfield as his through passes found Deepak Thakur and Pillay inside the Japanese circle frequently.

It took a brilliant move from Baljit Saini for India to notch its second goal. Saini snatched the ball near the centre circle and launched a counter down the right flank.

After dribbling past two opposing players, he sent in a sharp cross that was brilliantly deflected home by Gagan Ajit Singh to make it 2-0.

But India cut down the pace again content with inter-passing. In the final minutes of the first half, Japan managed to force two penalty corners but both were saved by goalkeeper Jude Menezes.

Irina stays on top
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Nov 18 — Irina Brar’s three over par 75 saw her continue to stay atop with an aggregate of 221 on the penultimate day of the 32nd Ladies India Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here today.

Short and stocky, Vandana Agarwal (Calcutta) again failed to reproduce her first day’s form. She could shoot eight over par 80. Placed on 228, she was as many seven strokes behind the leader.

Indeed difficult, it is not beyond Vandana’s grasp to unsettle young Irina if she brings her experience and ability into play. But Irina has been playing superbly and she will endeavour to maintain her lead and win the title.

The best round, however, came from the defending champion Shruti Khanna, who was the only one to fire under-par score of 71. She could put her act together with two birdies and one bogey. She had two birdies in first nine and a bogey on the 11th. Her play was satisfactory today.

Irina had a birdie on the first and bogey on the 3rd to be out in 36. In back nine, she muffed her 13th, which seemed her unlucky hole. She had a double bogey and another bogey on the 15th saw her finish three over 39. Her three days tally is 73, 73 and 75 (221).

Vandana was still in an extravagant mood. She kept dropping strokes. If her first nine were completed in 39, her back nine came in 41. Her aggregate of 80 failed to improve her position.

Another star Parnita Garewal played better than was she had done on previous two days. She had a score of five over 77 as against her previous scores of 82 and 82.

There was no justifiable reason for her indifferent play on the first two days when she putted awfully. Maybe, she will have to switch over to her old style of play. It is not necessary that every new style suits every trainee.

Leading scores: Irina Brar 221 (73,73,75), Vandana Agarwal 228 (86,80,80), Shruti Khanna 234 (81,82,71), Anjali Chopra 235 (78,80,77), Lalitha Balasubramaniam 240 (77,79,84), Parnita Garewal 241 (82,82,77) and Penuka Philip 241 (79,79,83).

Lennox Lewis eager to fight Tyson

NEW YORK, Nov 18 (AP) — Lennox Lewis is eager to defend his undisputed heavyweight title against Mike Tyson because “it is the most exciting fight out there.”

“He has that drawing ability,” Lewis said yesterday.

A Lewis-Tyson fight is far from imminent, though, according to Lou Dibella, who heads boxing for cable TV channel HBO. “The end of next year at the earliest,” he said.

Would Lewis be willing to wait 18 months to fight the former heavyweight champion, even if it meant Tyson’s skills would be further diminished?

“Yes, and they will be,” the British fighter said.

Lewis said he respected Tyson and was sympathetic toward the troubled fighter because of what Tyson has been through, including three years in prison on a rape conviction and jail time for assaulting two motorists after a minor accident.

“He is a man who used to be great trying to get his life in order,” said Lewis. “He’s gone through some bad times, but he’s married now, and he has gotten away from people like Don King.

Sociology aside, Lewis said a fight with Tyson would sell because it presented questions the champion believed fight fans would pay to see answered.

“Is he the man he used to be? How would he cope with Lewis? How would Lewis cope with him?” Lewis said. “He had the right moves before his trials and tribulations.”

Tyson’s camp seemed delighted when told of Lewis’ comments.

“At the right time, the fight will happen,” said Shelly Finkel, Tyson’s manager.

Lewis is under contract to the HBO and Tyson to showtime, but that cable TV conflict would present no problem that couldn’t be solved, according to Seth Abraham of the HBO.

Lewis’ 12-round victory over Evander Holyfield on November 13 will be shown on the HBO on Saturday night before the heavyweight fight between Michael Grant and Andrew Golota.

Lewis will do commentary for his unanimous decision over Holyfield, and then join the announcing team for the Grant-Golota fight.

Lewis may have more than just a passing interest in that fight. A victory by Grant (30-0) might put him in line for a title shot at Lewis.

Actually, Lewis knocked Golota down twice before stopping him at 1:35 in the first round of their fight in October, 1997.

During the news conference, Lewis finally officially became undisputed heavyweight champion when he was unceremoniously handed his ransomed IBF belt.

Delivery of the belt had been held up pending payment of a $ 300,000 sanctioning fee.

Kapil, Sachin calling the shots
From Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, Nov 18 — Strange are the ways of the national selectors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Otherwise why should the name of a wicketkeeper keep cropping up as a possible replacement for the injured Ajay Jadeja for India’s tour of Australia beginning later this month. Why only that. For the deciding one-day tie between India and New Zealand at the Ferozeshah Kotla here yesterday, a medium pace bowler (Javagal Srinath) was inducted in place of an injured middle-order batsman (Ajay Jadeja). That India won is altogether a different thing.

It is learnt that the decision to induct Srinath in the playing eleven was taken by the team captain, Sachin Tendulkar, in consultation with coach Kapil Dev during the flight from Guwahati to New Delhi. The Chairman of the National Selection Committee Chandu Borde was also on the same flight and it was easy for Sachin and Kapil to convince Borde that Srinath’s presence was essential for the team. With Borde agreeing, the rest was easy. Srinath was contacted at Bangalore and the medium pacer took Wednesday’s morning flight to the national capital. But all this while, it is learnt, no effort was made by Borde or the Secretary of the board, Mr J.Y. Lele, to contact the other selectors. As per the board’s constitution it is the Secretary who is the convener of the selection committee. The rules also provide for a teleconference in case any urgent matter suddenly crops up. If this was not important what was ?

It is clear to all concerned that it is Kapil and Sachin who are now calling the shots as far as team selection goes. And this is apparent from the fact that two of the national selectors, Ashok Malhotra, formerly of Haryana but now representing east zone in the panel, and Madan Lal have played under Kapil Dev. Two other selectors, T.A.Sekhar and Anil Despande, who have not played international cricket, are overawed in the very presence of Kapil while the chairman of the panel has a soft corner for the former star allrounder. Some critics say that Sekhar is simply happy to see his protege — T. Kumaran — in the national squad. So, by and large, Sachin and Kapil are getting the team they want without any opposition.

This is the reason why the name of Nayan Mongia has suddenly emerged as a possible replacement for the injured Ajay Jadeja. It is apparent that Jadeja would not be able to accompany the team to Australia given the nature of his injury. Remember how long it took for Srinath, who also suffered a similar type of shoulder injury, to recover fully.

The selectors admit, though not openly, that wicketkeeper M.K.S.Prasad has not come up to expectations and might find the going tough in Australia. But they cannot replace Prasad with Mongia as that would open the Pandora’s box. The selectors also agree that giving the keeping gloves to Rahul Dravid (as was done in the World Cup earlier this year) would only add to the problem of the team in case Dravid is injured while keeping wickets. Therefore, Nayan Mongia, who was replaced by Prasad in the national squad after the World Cup as the Baroda based player was nursing an injury, would enable to restore the balance of the squad.

Common sense says that a middle order batsman should be replaced by another middle order batsman. Besides the name of Mongia, the names of Hrisikesh Kanitkar and Martin Jacob, currently touring with the West Indies with the India A team, are being mentioned. But the name of former captain Mohammad Azharuddin , first sidelined after being injured in the World Cup, thus paving the way for Sachin to take over as captain for the second tenure, is not in contention in spite of the fact that his experience might turn out to be very useful for the squad with quite a few rookies. The Hyderabad batsman has proved his fitness by turning out for a number of Ranji Trophy matches.

Certain sources close to the board allege that the reason why Azhar is not being considered for the tour of Australia is other than cricket. His past performance as a player when Sachin was made skipper for the first time is being held out against him. Also, the coach and he are not exactly friends. But is it not the job of the selectors to select the best men for the job?

Vijay Kumar surges ahead
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 18 — Vijay Kumar of Lucknow repeated his two under 70 performance to surge ahead with an aggregate of 140 on the second day of the Rs nine lakh Hero Golf Chandigarh Open at the Chandigarh Golf Club course here today.

Trailing the leader just two strokes behind was the defending champion and local lad Amritinder Singh, who also repeated his one-under 71 performance to aggregate 142.

Tied at the third place at one-under 143 were Arjun Atwal, Shiv Prakash, Mukesh Kumar and Feroz Ali. Gaurav Ghei and Basad Ali were joint seventh at level-par 144.

It was a rare day for Vijay Kumar who, for a change, did not hit the ball well, but putted brilliantly for a two-under 70 card. The twice Mahindra Player of the Year required just 25 putts to complete the round which contained four birdies and two bogies. Vijay looked in superb form as he made the turn at three-under with birdies on the third , sixth sevent and ninth holes and a single bogey on the fourth where his eight-footer par putt lipped out. His shortest birdie putt was an eight-footer on the sixth hole, while the other three were from 12-15 feet range. On the back nine, Vijay failed to add any more birdies and picked up a bogey on the 12th when he landed in the right bushes with his tee shot.

“The problem today was that I was choosing the clubs all wrong and short-clubbing them. But I am very satisfied with the way I putted today,” said Vijay who had won the Mercedes-Benz Open here at the same venue two seasons back.

Amritinder, on the other hand, wasn’t happy with his putting. “I needed 30 putts despite hitting only 12 greens in regulation” he said after the round. After three-putting for a par on the second hole, Amritinder missed birdie chances from 6-8 feet on four occasions.

Veteran Basad Ali was in superb form during the front nine where he made four birdies and no bogies. But he could not continue the momentum on the back nine and finished two-under 70, the best card of the day along with Vijay Kumar.

The reigning Wills Indian Open champion Arjun Atwal made a good comeback after being three -over at the turn On the back nine, he had eagle chances on the 13th and 16th but finished with three birdies instead and level-par for the day.

Overnight leaders Sanjay Kumar and Mohammed Islam dropped down the leaderboard with rounds of 75 and 77, respectively. While Sanjay’s hitting was off colour today, Islam had trouble with his putter and made three three-putts.

Shot of the day: The shot of the day came from twice Indian Open champion Ali Sher. On the 410-yard, fourth hole, the Delhi pro found left water hazard with his driver. Undaunted, Ali Sher hit a perfect six-iron from 160 yards from the water which pitched on the apron and rolled into the cup for an eagle.

Lehal continues to lead amateurs: Sandy Lehal of Chandigarh continued to lead the amateurs with an aggregate of five-over 149 after a 78 round today. Harjinder Kang was four strokes adrift of the leader at 153.

Scores (after 36 holes ): 140 — Vijay Kumar (70+70); 142 — Amritinder Singh (71+71); 143 — Mukesh Kumar (71+72), Shiv Prakash (71+72), Feroz Ali (72+71); 144 — Basad Ali (74+70); Gaurav Ghoi (73+71); 145 — Sanjay Kumar (70+75); Rohtas Singh (73+72); Devendra Patel (71+74); 146 — Digvijay Singh (73+73); 147 — Indrajit Bhalotia ( 76+71); Mohd Islam (70+77); Mohd Maqbool (74+73); Rafiq Ali (76+71);

Amateur: 149 — Sandy Lehal (71+78); 153 — Harjinder Kang (77+76); 156 — Vikramjit Singh (80+76); Girish Virk (77+ 79).

Indian duo makes winning start

HARTFORD (USA) — Nov 18 (PTI) — India’s Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi opened their campaign in style with a straight sets win over eighth seeds Piet Norval and Kevin Ullyett in the ATP Tour World Doubles Tennis Championship here.

Paes-Bhupathi, the top-ranked doubles pair, notched up a 7-6 (7/1) 6-3 win over the South African-Zimbabwean duo in the opening round-robin match at this season ending event last night.

The top seeds, finalists in the 1997 edition, came here after a highly forgettable campaign last year when they lost their first two matches and then withdrew because of injuries.

This year the Indians had a mixed season. Failing to defend five of the six titles they won in 1998, including two super 9 events, Paes-Bhupathi won two Grand Slams from four finals.

The championship will be played in the round-robin format with two teams from each group — Gold and Green — making it to the semifinals.

Playing in Gold group with relatively easy opponents, Paes and Bhupathi should have an easy path to the last-four stage.

England, Slovenia qualify

LONDON, Nov 18 (AP) — England stumbled into the European 2000 Championship despite a 1-0 loss to old enemy Scotland yesterday, with tiny Slovenia, Turkey and Denmark rounding out the 16-team field for next summer’s tournament.

England, going into the match with a 2-0 first-leg lead, had what coach Kevin Keegan called a “poor performance” with Don Hutchison’s first-half goal putting the favourites under pressure for the whole match before thousands of shocked Englishmen at Wembley stadium.

Slovenia gained their first spot in a major international soccer tournament, drawing 1-1 in Ukraine to reach the final after winning 2-1 over the weekend in the home leg.

Turkey secured their place with a 0-0 home draw in Bursa after a 1-1 score on Saturday in Dublin, picking up the deciding away goal. Denmark, the ’92 European champions, hammered Israel 3-0 after winning in Israel on Saturday 5-0.

Punjab boys in semis
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 18 — Hosts, Punjab, had mixed fortunes on the penultimate day of the 26th National Subjunior basketball Championship for boys and girls at Sri Anandpur Sahib indoor stadium today.

While the boys made it to the last four stage, the Punjab girls bowed out of the championship losing their quarter-final game.

Punjab boys made it look so easy that they scored at will against Kerala to run with a comfortable 60-33 win after amassing a comfortable 23-8 lead at the breather. Handicapped by a tiring pre-quarter-final game against MP in the morning, Kerala boys virtually gave up hopes in the second half. If MP lost to Kerala in the pre-quarter-finals, it was primarily because of injudicious handling of players by the team officials.

In the girls section, the story was different for the home team. It found the going tough against sturdy and superbly fit Tamil Nadu girls. Though Punjab girls put up a gallant fight but lost the quarter-final game at 37-40. The defeat was also more because of improper handling of the team by team officials.

In subjunior or mini basketball, every player has to play two quarters of 10 minutes each and each player has to remain a substitute on the bench for a minimum of one quarter. The players can be substituted only when a player on the court is injured or has committed five personal fouls or is disqualified.

The team officials of both MP boys and Punjab girls made substitutions on the pretext of the players being injured. The result was that for the last quarter, both these teams were left with four players each.

The Manipur-Rajasthan quarterfinal in the boys section was a well contested game though the latter had taken a morale boosting 28-21 lead at the breather. At one stage, both the teams were tied at 38 points each before Manipur forged ahead with a four-point lead. But once Puran Chandra was disqualified, they fell behind Rajasthan and continued to trail till the end. Rajasthan won 60-45.

Defending champions Pondicherry, who had earlier lost to Tamil Nadu, were also knocked out in the quarterfinals. Andhra Pradesh won comfortably at 60-28 after leading 47-25 at the breather.

Maharashtra faced little difficulty in polishing aside the challenge of Tamil Nadu at 63-30. In the girls section, MP defeated Delhi 28-3 in a one-sided affair. In another match, Maharashtra toyed with Pondicherry before emerging winners at 40-15. In the last quarterfinal, Kerala defeated Andhra 59-53 after leading 27-21 at the breather.

The following are the results: Pre Quarter-finals: Boys: Kerala b MP 67-64 (39-20); Maharashtra b Bihar 44-13 (25-11); Girls: Tamil Nadu b Assam 35-17 (24-10); Delhi b Haryana 33-23 (14-7). Quarterfinals: Boys: Punjab b Kerala 60-33 (23-8); Maharashtra b T. Nadu 65-30( 34-19); AP b Pondicherry 65-36 (28-16); Rajasthan b Manipur 60-55 (28-21).

Girls: Maharashtra b Pondicherry 40-15 (34-13); MP b Delhi 48-3 (37-3); Kerala b AP 59-53 (27-21); and Tamil Nadu b Punjab 40-37 (23-17).
