Two booked for cheating

CHANDIGARH, Nov 22 — The local police has booked two persons for cheating a Hoshiarpur district village resident to the tune of Rs 2 lakh on the pretext of arranging a job for him.

According to the police, Harmesh Singh, an ex-serviceman and a resident of Dollanwal village in the Hoshiarpur district, complained that two persons, claiming to be Jagir Singh and Chaman Lal contacted him at his village a few days ago and promised to get him the job of a security officer in a reputed firm. They asked him to come to Chandigarh on November 17. Later, he was asked to contact them at Hotel Aroma on November 21 alongwith Rs 2 lakh. When he reached the place, the money was taken from him by the duo, who slipped away on the pretext of bringing an appointment letter for him. A case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered. Investigation is on in the case.

Car stolen: Mr Subhash Chand, a resident of Kaithal in Haryana, reported that somebody took away his car at a marriage ceremony in Sector 36 yesterday.

In a complaint to the police, Mr Subhash Chand said he was in the city to attend the marriage of Vikas, also a resident of Kaithal. During the ceremony, a person identifying himself as Nirmal Singh, a resident of Burail, demanded the keys of his car as he wanted to fetch something from the market. He took away his car but did not return. A case under Section 406 of the IPC has been registered.

Two arrested: The local police has arrested Ram Avtaar and Sat Pal, both residents of Ram Darbar, for quarrelling at a public place. A case has been registered.

Investors cheated: A local finance and investment company has been booked by the local police for cheating at least three investors of lakhs of rupees. Three separate first information reports (FIR) have been registered on the directions of the judicial magistrate of Kharar.

According to the information, one of the investors, Sunmukh, a resident of Sector 19 in Chandigarh, invested Rs 1.26 lakh in the Phase VII based company, Ashma Finance and Investment Company Limited, in smaller sums from time to time from April 1994 to February 1998.

The two other complainants, Dharam Singh and Roop Lal, both residents of Phase 9, were cheated by the company of Rs 4.79 lakh and Rs 2.37 lakh, respectively.

The police has registered a case against at least 11 persons linked with the company under Sections 406, 420, 427, 467, 471 and 468 of the IPC. The persons who have been booked are P.C. Sharma, Inderpal, Surinder Pal, Ramesh Chander, V.P. Paul, R.K. Rajan, B.P. Paul, P.C. Sharma, Parwinder, Darshan and Sunmukh.

Scooter stolen: A scooter (PB-65-1916) was stolen from Phase VIII here on Sunday. The owner of the scooter, Rajinder Singh, in a complaint lodged with the police, said he had parked his scooter to buy vegetables from an 'apni mandi'. When he returned, the scooter was not there. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered by the police.Back

Orange sells at Rs 60 a dozen

SAS NAGAR, Nov 22 — Barring apple, prices of most of the fruits available in the local markets were slightly higher when compared to their prices in the markets of Chandigarh. However, there were a few exceptions like pineapple and guava, which were cheaper as compared to the prices in Chandigarh. A survey of the markets revealed that the Kandhar variety of pomegranate was available at Rs 110 a kg.

Another quality of the fruit was priced at Rs 60 a kg. There was variation in the prices of mausambi, a dozen of which was selling at between Rs 30 and Rs 40. A vendor in the Phase 4 market was selling a dozen of the fruit at Rs 40.Another vendor in the Phase 3B 2 market was selling mausambi at Rs 30 a dozen. Guava was priced at Rs 15 a kg in local markets. It was selling at Rs 20 a kg in markets of Chandigarh.

Pineapple was another item was cheaper in the local markets. It was available at Rs 30 a piece. The prices of apple were almost the same as in Chandigarh. The delicious variety of the fruit was selling at between Rs 35 and Rs 30 a kg. The Kinnaur variety was priced at Rs 40 a kg.A dozen of banana was selling at Rs 20. However, in the Phase 7 market the fruit was being sold at Rs 15 a dozen. Orange was available at two different prices — Rs 60 and Rs 40 a dozen. Another fruit, ''cheeku'', was being sold at Rs 40 a kg. Papaya and grapes were available at Rs 20 and Rs 100 a kg. Back



 


GMSSS-37, SPS-41 ball badminton champs

CHANDIGARH, Nov 22 — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, and hosts Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, won the under-17 and under-14 sections' finals, respectively of the UT Inter-School Ball Badminton Tournament for girls being played here.

In the under-17 final, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, beat GMSSS-21, 29-14, 29-16. For the winners, Anshu scored 18 points, Rohini 17, Megha 10, Gurpreet 8 and Jasmine 5.

In the under-14 section, SPS-41 defeated Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, 29-9, 29-13. Jagdeep scored 20 points, Monu 15, Shivani 10, Raman 8 and Gurpreet 5.

Smriti scored 9 points for the losers, Swati 7 and Deepika 6.

Cricket tourney: Hosts St John's High School, Sector 26, and YPS, SAS Nagar, reached the final of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament for players under the age of 10 being played here today.

In the semi-final, YPS SAS Nagar defeated Edmund Rice-26 by 28 runs. Brief scores: YPS — 119 for seven in 20 overs (Gurkeerat Singh 39, Simar 19, Dhruvavatar 2 for 13); Edmund Rice-26 — 91 all out in 17.2 overs (Aayush Raj Soni 38, Kirat 3 for 10, Savtej 2 for 16).

In the second match, St Kabir School defeated Stepping Stone School by four wickets. Brief scores: Stepping Stone — 60 all out in 19.3 overs (Sahir 3 for 9, Mrinal 2 for 10, Jatin 2 for 20); St Kabir — 61 for 6 in 13.2 overs (Nipun 17 n.o., Nikhil 3 for 16).

Cycling meet: GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, won the Panjab University Inter-College Cycling Men's Championship with 34 points, followed by GN College, Narangwal, and GGD SD College, Chandigarh, who secured second and third positions, respectively.

Paramvir Singh of GN College, Narangwal, was declared the best cyclist with 10 points. Parminder Singh won the gold medal in 1,000 m time trial. Rakjesh Dalal in 1,000 m sprint, Paramvir Singh in 4,000 m individual pursuit and 1000 m massed start, also won gold medals.

GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, won the first position in 4,000 m team pusrsuit and also in 1,500 m team time trial.

Inter-school cycling: The Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association has decided to hold the Inter-School Cycling Championship from this year, according to Mr Rakesh Mohindra, Secretary of the association. The meet will be organised on November 28 in Government College for Men, Sector 11, at 8.30 am.

The age groups for this championship are under-14, under-16 and under-18. Those interested may contact the Secretary at C-80, Sector 14, PU, by November 25 along with original birth certificates.

Badminton court: The badminton court of Chandigarh Press Club will be inaugurated tomorrow by Mr Sampat Singh, Finance Minister of Haryana, at 11 am. The one-court cemented hall will help in promoting badminton activities in the club.

Karate champ: Master Anurag Arya, a Class III student of DAV Public School, Sector 15, has won laurels for his city by winning the second prize in the North Zone Independence Cup Karate-Do Championship. This championship was organised by the Karate-do-Indo-Ryu Association International (India) held in August at Shimla. He won in the sub-junior category (under 25 kg). In this meet, players from all states of north India took part.

Anurag who is only seven-year-old had also won a gold medal in the UT State Karate Championship in the sub-junior catageory (23 to 26 kg) held in September.

Mr Jawahar Arya, father of Anurag, who is an ex-serviceman, said the school had not given due status to the boy in view of his achievements. He said his son had also been good in studies and other activities like painting.

Anurag aims to get black belt in karate but needs coaching from experts for this. Anurag requires a proper mentor in karate and has the potential of doing well at the national level.

St Kabir Trophy: The UT Cricket Association will hold the Inter-School Cricket Championship for the St Kabir Trophy from December 3. The tournament is to be held for boys under the age of 12 and will be organised at Cricket Stadium in Sector 16. Entries close on November 27 at Cricket Stadium and these must be accompanied by the team list along with birth certificates of the players attested by the school principal.

Under-19 cricket: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, by two wickets in the UT Inter-School Cricket Tournament for players under the age of 19 held here. GMSSS-37 made 125 runs and were all out, while GMSSS-23 achieved the target in 16.3 overs with two wicktes still in hand.Back
