Aussies score historic win HOBART (Australia), Nov 22 (AFP) Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer batted Australia to an extraordinary four-wicket victory over Pakistan to defy history and win the second cricket Test and the series at Bellerive Oval here today. The two West Australian left-handers demoralised the Pakistanis with centuries and a record partnership to achieve the third highest winning target in Test cricket and confirm Australias status as the unofficial world champions in the Test arena. Given little hope of reaching the 369-run target after limping to 126 for five at stumps on Saturday, Gilchrist and Langer batted together for 265 minutes to steer Australia to a remarkable win. Pakistan, trailing by 26 runs on first innings, made 392 in their second essay. They scored 222 in the first. Gilchrist, playing in his second Test as wicketkeeping successor to Ian Healy, was in commanding form cracking his debut Test century supported by the indomitable Langer. Gilchrist fittingly hit the winning run. He remained unbeaten on 149 off 163 balls with Langer dismissed just five runs before the target for 127 in 421 minutes. The pair put on 238 runs for the sixth wicket, bettering the 35-year-old record against Pakistan, eclipsing Bob Cowper-Tom Veivers 139-run stand at the Melbourne Cricket ground. Only twice before have teams scored higher to win a Test. India scored 406 for four when set 403 by the West Indies at Port-of-Spain in 1975-76 and Don Bradmans Australians hit 404 for three to beat England at Leeds in 1948. Gilchrist reached his 100 off 110 balls and Langer, so much the foundation of the Australian comeback, brought up his fourth Test hundred 40 minutes after lunch. It took him 384 minutes to raise the century off 269 balls. But the Pakistanis will be bitter over an controversial incident when they believed they had dismissed Langer. Langer, on 76 and Australia at 237 for five, prodded at a Wasim Akram seamer and wicketkeeper Moin Khan celebrated an apparent catch. All the fieldsmen went up in appeal and Akram raced down the pitch in celebration, but Australian umpire Peter Parker was unmoved, much to Akrams chagrin. Television replays showed no deviation as the ball passed Langers bat, but the Pakistanis were adamant that the Australian No 3 had made contact with his bat. In todays Press it was reported that Parker had apologised to Langer for mistakenly giving him out for 59 to a catch off his pad off the bowling of Saqlain Mushtaq. Langers heart was racing when on Akrams next delivery he edged past Mohammad Wasim in the slips for a single. Defeat shatters Pakistan HOBART, Nov 22 (AFP) Australias amazing four-wicket second Test triumph has left Wasim Akram with a monumental task to regroup his players for the final Test starting in Perth on Friday. The Pakistanis were desolate as Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer shared in a record 238-run stand that propelled Australia to bring off the third highest winning fourth innings run chase in Test cricket history here today. Set 369 runs to win the Hobart Test and the series, the Australians recovered from 126 for five an hour before stumps yesterday to sail home and win emphatically. The third Test at Perth now has no bearing on the series and yet again Pakistan have failed to win a series in nine tours to Australia since 1956-57. Australia have won 14 of the 25 Tests played here. Pakistan have been successful in just four. Spurred by offspinner Saqlain Mushtaqs Test-best 6-46 to restrict Australia to a 24-run innings lead and buttressed by Inzamam-ul-Haqs first-ever Test century against Australia in the second innings, Pakistan had history on their side to level the series. That they failed to kill off the Australian second innings after the exit of Ricky Ponting still 243 runs short of the target at 5 pm yesterday makes the defeat even more galling. It was impossible to gauge the Pakistanis feelings about their shattering defeat captain Akram was too ill with a low sugar count to attend the post-match conference and there was no other team spokesman available to talk to the media. Despite complaints from the media about not having a team spokesman, it was learnt that the touring party had left Bellerive Oval for the team hotel. The media was eager to learn of Akrams version of a controversial incident when Pakistan believed they had dismissed Langer 75 minutes into the final day. Langer, on 76 and Australia at 237 for five, prodded at an Akram seamer and wicketkeeper Moin Khan celebrated an apparent catch. All the fieldsmen went up in appeal and Akram jigged down the pitch in celebration, but Australian umpire Peter Parker was unmoved, much to Akrams annoyance. Akram was seething after the over and left Ijaz Ahmed to fetch his jumper off Parker. While Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer were swiftly carrying Australia to a remarkable win over Pakistan today, captain Steve Waugh and the rest of their teammates were trying not to move. We were very nervous, we didnt move for the two or three hours, Waugh said. Cricket is a pretty superstitious game. We stayed in the same seats and tried to do the same things. While the Australians
sat quietly willing their batsmen on, Gilchrist (149
n.o.) and Langer (127) put on a 238-run partnership which
gave the hosts the third best fourth innings chase in
Test history and a four-wicket win. |
India storm into semifinal KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (PTI) Asian Games gold medallist India stormed into the semifinal of the Asia Cup hockey beating Hong Kong 5-0 in a pool B match after hosts Malaysia had struggled against Japan before making it to the last four stage here today. For India it was a laboured win as they struggled against an ordinary Hong Kong defence. India, with this win, topped pool B with seven points. Malaysia have five points and thus finish second behind India. Hong Kong have lost two matches and now have only one game against Japan. India took the lead in the second minute off their first penalty corner. It came off a move by Pillay who went into the circle but was rushed by Hong Kong goalkeeper Chak Tung Cheung. Anurag Raghuvanshis flick entered the top corner of the net to give the lead to India. One thought that this would set off a flood of moves but the Hong Kong defence stood out as the Indians were slow in the attack and could not make much headway. The forwards kept on fumbling with easy chances. In the 18th minute, Pillay and Chandi moved in to pass the ball to Deepak Thakur whose reverse hit went into the Hong Kong goal off their own defenders stick for 2-0 lead. India had six penalty corners in the first half and except for the first one that was converted by Anurag Raghuvanshi, none of the others came off with either the goalkeeper saving or the shot going out. India piled on the pressure in the second half, bringing in Bimal Lakra whose presence immediately made a difference as he started going up in the attack. Bimals forays up front paid off when he latched onto a stray ball and with a reverse hit from the top of the circle scored Indias third goal in the 37th minute. Two minutes later, Baljit Singh Dhillon wove into the circle from the right flank after a move with Gagan Ajit, beat one defender and then with a low shot beat the Hong Kong goalkeeper to take the score to 4-0. India could have scored few more goals in the next ten minutes but Gagan Ajit and Dhanraj Pillays shots were off the target. In the 53rd minute, India could have again increased the lead when they earned their ninth penalty corner but after the variation, Gagan Ajit Singhs deflection hit the post and went out. A minute later, Dhanraj Pillay scored his first goal of the tournament when he latched onto a pass from Ramandeep Singh to fluently put the ball past the goalkeeper. It was the former captains first goal in three matches. The misses continued with India failing to convert another two penalty corners in the dying minutes. India now have three
days of rest before they take on either South Korea or
Pakistan in the semifinals. |
Kartik restricts West Indies A PORT-OF-SPAIN (Trinidad), Nov 22 (AP) A sixth-wicket partnership of 114 runs between Rawl Lewis and Ryan Hinds piloted West Indies A to a crucial 63-run first innings lead and a winning opportunity on the third day of the opening A team cricket Test against India A here yesterday. India A reached 54 for one by the close, still trailing by nine runs with one day remaining in the match. Opener Gagan Khoda (14) and Jacob Martin (36) were at the crease. Despite a haul of six for 75 from left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, West Indies A stretched its overnight 131 for four to 289. Grenadian all-rounder Lewis topscored with 64 off 150 balls, while Barbadian Hinds hit 62 from 182 deliveries. Both batsmen passed their previous best first-class scores. India A was bowled out for 226 on Saturday. The tourists began the day well, with leading fast bowler Dodda Ganesh removing Sylvester Joseph to a catch at extra cover. The 21-year-old Antiguan added just two runs to his overnight 56. His 140-ball innings was also a career-best. It included six fours and spanned 197 minutes. His dismissal brought Lewis in to join Hinds, and the pair slowly took the initiative for their team. Paes-Bhupathi duo loses in final HARTFORD, (Connecticut) Nov 22 (Reuters) For the second time in two months, Canadian Sebastien Lareau and American Alex OBrien defeated top-ranked Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes for a major championship. Lareau and OBrien claimed their first ATP Tour world doubles championship yesterday by making quick work of Bhupathi and Paes 6-3 6-2 6-2. The duo needed only 86 minutes to claim their eighth doubles title as a team and fourth this season. They posted a 7-6 6-4 win over the Indians in Septembers US Open final. The victory meant Lareau and OBrien would finish the year ranked second in the world behind Bhupathi and Paes after the final ATP doubles rankings were released today. Runners-up in 1996, Lareau and OBrien pocketed a total of $ 170,000 for the week, having accumulated $ 90,000 in winnings up to yesterdays match and an additional $ 80,000 for claiming the tournament. It was a disappointing end to the season for Bhupathi and Paes, who also lost in the 1997 final to Rick Leach and Jonathan Stark. The Indians won three titles in 1999 and became the first team in 47 years to reach the final at all four Grand Slams, winning the French Open and Wimbledon. They were seeking their 16th doubles title together. Bhupathi and Paes still lead the all-time series with Lareau and OBrien 5-4. |
Davenport downs Hingis, lifts title NEW YORK, Nov 22 (Reuters) World number two Lindsay Davenport saved her best for the last match of the year as she thoroughly dominated top-ranked Martina Hingis yesterday to capture her first Chase Championships title in her third trip to the final. The second seed was at the absolute top of her game from start to finish, riding her deep, punishing groundstrokes and big serve to a 6-4 6-2 victory in a swift 61 minutes. Today I played probably my best match ever, beamed the 23-year-old Wimbledon champion after collecting her $ 500,000 winners check for an hours work on the blue carpet at Madison Square Garden. What an awesome way to end the year, enthused Davenport after beating the world number one in a final for the second week in row. To win the last two tournaments and beat the number of top-10 players I did, let alone Martina twice in two weeks, its so exciting, added Davenport, who reached eight finals this year and won seven of them. The victory for the nearly 6-foot-3 (1.90 m) Californian marked a reversal of the conclusion of 1998 when then top-ranked Davenport lost the Chase final to Hingis. Davenport also lost the 1994 final here. I really went for it today, something I dont think I quite did last year, Davenport said. When I woke up today I really just wanted to go for my shots, go for my winners and be the one who was dictating. Davenports game plan worked to perfection as she claimed her 26th career title, tying her with Hingis. Yesterday I had a great win against Venus (Williams). Lindsay was just a level too good today, said Hingis, (19) who earned $ 250,000 as runner-up and finishes with more than 3 million dollars in tournament earnings for the third successive year. You have a great victory one day and a loss the next. Thats life, I guess, said the suddenly philosophical Swiss teen, who reached 13 finals this year and won seven, including the Australian Open, and posted a tour-best 71-13 match record. In Saturdays semifinal Hingis used her superb shotmaking to counter the power of the third-seeded Williams. But on Sunday, the top seed always seemed to be barely hanging on. When Davenport wasnt handcuffing her with a deceptively effective serve, the American was pounding groundstrokes so deep that Hingis was often left lunging just to get the ball back. Those defensive stabs by Hingis would give Davenport short balls to put away for winners. |
Kanitkar replaces Jadeja MUMBAI, Nov 22 (PTI) The national selectors today named Maharashtra all-rounder Hrishikesh Kanitkar to replace the injured Ajay Jadeja for the Indian Cricket teams tour of Australia ignoring the claims of former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin and wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia yet again. We discussed the names of Azharuddin, Mongia and Baroda batsman Jacob Martin, but decided to go in for youngster Kanitkar as the young Indian sides performance against the New Zealanders was satisfactory, selection committee chairman Chandu Borde told reporters here. He said it was a collective decision of the selectors, coach Kapil Dev and skipper Sachin Tendulkar. Kanitkar, who is leading the Indian-a team in the West Indies, will fly straight to Australia while the man he replaces, Jadeja will leave tomorrow for treatment to his injured shoulder in South Africa. Borde said Saurashtra batsman Sitanshu Kotak, who scored a hundred for the Rest of India against Ranji champions Karnataka in Bangalore recently, will be joining the India-A team in the west Indies as Kanitkars replacement. Board secretary Jayawant
Lele, who was also present, said the report from
Johannesburg-based Dr Mark Ferguson said Jadeja had a
rotator cuff tear in his right shoulder which would take
atleast three to four weeks to heal. |
Kunjarani annexes silver NEW DELHI, Nov 22 (UNI) N. Kunjarani (31) of the CRPF proved her mettle today when she won the silver medal in the 105 kg jerk (48 kg class) at the 13th World Womens Weightlifting Championships being held at Athens. Winner of 20 medals in the last seven world meets, Kunjarani is ranked fifth among the top 10 lifters of the century. She missed the 80 kg snatch on her second and third attempts which deprived her of an overall medal. She lifted a total of 180 kg. Sanamacha Chanu, the 24-year-old police lifter who won a gold medal at the world police games, put in a disappointing performance failing in all her attempts in snatch in the same class. Nandini Devi in the 53 kg class placed 11th lifting a total of 182.5 kg. Surprisingly Kunjarani was given a low starting lift of 95 kg in jerk against her best of 107.5 kg during the final trials, reports received here said. Due to wrangling in the
Indian Weightlifting Federation no manager was sent for
the world class team. As this is the qualifying round for
the Sydney Olympics there was need for a good management
to accompany the team. |
India go down to UAE 1-3 DUBAI, Nov 22 (PTI) India frittered away a hardfought half-time lead of 1-0 to go down to fancied United Arab Emirates 1-3 on the opening day of the Asian Cup group three qualifiers at Abu Dhabi last night. Uzbekistan, helped by a second half brace by Maksim Shatskikh, thrashed SAF Games champions Bangladesh 6-0 in the second match of the day at the Al Ain Stadium. The Indians came up with a creditable show as mercurial skipper I M Vijayan scored the first goal in the 20th minute with a beautiful curling freekick stunning the hosts. But UAE fought back into the game with three goals in the second half to confirm their superiority. India were found wanting in defence as Saeed Al Kas equalised 15 minutes into the second half converting one of captain Mohammed Alis many swerving corner kicks. Indian keeper Virender Singh was left stranded and the UAE fans heaved a sigh of relief. However, Virender Singh guarded his post well with at least three beautiful saves to frustrate the homeside but two crucial miscalculations from him later on in the match cost dearly for India, playing without their ace striker Baichung Bhutia. Kas, who is known for his skills in the air, scored again as he headed a lob which eluded the Indian keeper once again as he rushed out in the 85th minute. The third UAE goal came from a penalty awarded after Mohammed Ibrahim was pulled down by K.V. Dhanesh on the edge of the box and Abdul Salam Juma easily converted the spot kick. The margin could have been higher had UAE capitalised the opportunities that came their way. Juma, who had come in place of Hassan Saeed, had a heave at the goal in the 73rd minute but the shot flew over the crossbar. Earlier, they had come close to increasing their tally when Adelmattars header hit the post and went out while another good try from Gharib Harib also went astray. Uzbekistan dominated throughout in the match in which Midfielders Mirdzalal Kasimov and Otabek Pirmatov excelled. But the outstanding performance came from Shatskikh who scored in the 52nd and 75th minutes. Kasimov (38th), Primatov (38th), Fevzi Davletov (46th) and Abdikohor Marifaliey (86th minute) scored the other goals. Uzbek coach Rahimo described the game as a practice session as his highly superior team demolished the SAF games champions without much fuss. Teams: India: Virendra Singh, I M Vijayan, K.V. Resuming at 116 for two, J&K batsmen were dismissed for 320 runs shortly before tea as the visitors could not capitalise on solid innings by two of their top order batsmen. Amitpal Singh and Dhruv Mahajan played responsibly and added 233 runs for the third wicket, but their middle order fell to a fiery spell by Nehra, who used the new ball to a devastating effect. Nehra took six wickets in the second innings and ended with a match tally of 11 wickets for 118 runs. Off-spinner Nikhil Chopra too added his bit by taking three wickets today. 100-run lead for Punjab GURGAON, Nov 22 After getting a first innings lead of 100 runs Punjab succeeded in capturing three Haryana wickets for 40 runs at close of play on the third day in the Ranji Trophy league encounter at Nehru Stadium here today. Top order Haryana batsmen appeared to have crumbled under psychological pressure of Punjabs first innings lead. The centurian of the first innings Jitender Singh was dismissed after scoring only five runs. After the addition of 27 runs in the total, off spinner Saranjit Singh struck to dismiss skipper Parender Sharma for nine. Night watchman Pradeep Jain also could not last long and was caught by Pankaj Dharmani off Navdeep Singh before opening his account. Earlier, in reply to Haryanas first innings total of 279, Punjab resumed their innings from 233 for 2, lost remaining eight wickets nine minutes before tea break as Punjab innings folded at 379. Yuvraj, who had slammed his maiden century in Ranji Trophy yesterday, was clean bowled by left arm leg spinner Pradeep Jain for 149. He remained at the wicket for 372 minutes, faced 291 balls and struck 21 boundaries and two sixes. The other overnight not out batsman Dinesh Mongia scored 63 runs before being stumped by Ajay Ratra off Pankaj Thakur. Haryana skipper Parender Sharma took new ball after 99 overs which was well utilised by their bowlers. They not only checked the flow of runs but also hastened the end of innings. Punjab lost last four wickets for only 30 runs out of which three were claimed by Sanjay Dalal, who had a haul of 3 for 23 runs.
