In-laws booked for demanding dowry

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21 — The police has registered a case against the in-laws of a Sector 42 resident for harassing her for bringing inadequate dowry.

According to police sources, Ms Kamini, in her complaint alleged that she was married to P.K. Mittal in Mach, 1996, and had been ill-treated by her husband and his parents ever since. Many times she had been sent to her parents' home to get more dowry.

A case has been registered under Section 498-A, IPC.

Minor abducted: Mrs Sikandra Devi, a resident of Buterla village, reported that her minor daughter had been abducted allegedly by Chunnu, a resident of Narvana village, Sitamarhi, Bihar.

While further investigations are on, a case under Section 363, IPC, has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Smack seized: The police arrested Harpal Singh, alias Raju, a resident of Sector 32, and seized 30 gm of smack from him late last night. A case under Section 21, NDPS Act, has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

Arrested: The police has arrested Gulshan Kumar, a resident of Burail village, and seized seven bottles of liquor from him. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Killed in accident: A motorcyclist, Surinder Singh, was crushed to death by an oil tanker on the national highway near here on Thursday evening. According to police sources, the deceased while taking a turn towards the petrol station to get petrol was run over by the tanker (HP-40-0885). After hitting the motor cycle, the driver of the tanker sped away.

Surinder Singh (23) was a resident of Baroli village and married nine months ago.

ZIRAKPUR

Car stolen: Two unidentified youths, wearing police uniform, forcibly took away a Santro car of an Ambala residents from near Zirakpur last night. The incident took place between the Chandigarh barrier and the Zirakpur traffic lights at about 8.40 p.m.

Mr Vivek Gupta of Ambala cantonment, who was on his way to Chandigarh to attent a marriage party, said that a Maruti car chased him from the Zirakpur traffic lights and signalled him to stop near the Chandigarh barrier.

According to Mr Gupta, a youth in his mid-twenties, who was wearing a police uniform, asked him why he did not stop at the police naka near the traffic lights. He then asked the car owner to show the documents of the car and accompany him to the naka .

The fake policeman then took the keys of the car and started the engine. He asked the car owner to sit on the other seat. As the owner went round car the "policeman" sped away.Back

Posters depict child health theme

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21 — Colourful posters focussing on female foeticide, pulse polio immunisation and other aspects of child health were today put up at an exhibition in Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10.

The exhibition, put up by students of the Government College of Art in collaboration with the Health department, UT, was inaugurated by the Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mrs Vineeta Rai.

As many as 90 posters put up by 48 students of the college have depicted the themes in a subtle and symbolic manner. The posters highlighting the importance of girl child and condemning female foeticide were impressive. The other works were also of a high calibre.

The posters made by the following students were adjudged for a cash award of Rs 2,000: Sandeep Singh, Jatinder and Deepali, Mandeep Kaur Sidhu, Bharti Sharma, Radhika Chaudhary, Manisha Singh, Manu Gupta, Bhanu Arora, Amrita, Nitasha Gupta and Saru Rana.

The exhibition will remain open from 10 am to 5 pm daily till October 25.

Addressing the students at the prize distribution function, Mrs Rai lauded the efforts of the award winners and said the theme is relevant in the present day society.Back

HUDA penalised for harassing allottee

PANCHKULA, Oct 21 — The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered the Haryana Urban Development Authority to pay Rs 20,000 to Mrs Seema Singh, a resident of Sector 2, Panchkula, on account of mental agony, not charge extension fee up to December, 2000, and fill up the plot in question with earth up to the road level within two months, failing which the complainant shall be entitled to Rs 30,000 and Rs 2,000 as cost of proceedings.

In her complaint, Mrs Singh had alleged that she was allotted a plot in Sector 21, Panchkula, in 1987. Payments were made by her regularly and the entire price of the plot was charged along with interest and enhancement following which she was sent the paper possession without giving any demarcation on the site. On arriving at the plot, she found a water tank on the plot and employees of HUDA manufacturing cement tiles.

After a complaint by her, the Administrator directed the staff concerned to examine and report the situation. In spite of repeated reminders, HUDA had failed to remove the tank. In its statement, HUDA said that the complainant was asked to obtain possession and not asked to take paper possession. also, she did not get the building plan sanctioned. It was added that it was the duty of the complainant to protect her plot after the delivery of the possession and adding that no extension fee and dues up to date had been paid by the complainant.

The bench comprising Mr R.C. Taneja and Mr B.S. Badhran was of the opinion that by digging of soil from the plot for manufacturing of cement tiles after construction of a deep water tank, HUDA had indulged in unfair trade practices and that it was illegal and unfair action on its part.Back

Common vegetables down

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21 — Despite transportation charges going up due to a steep hike in the diesel price, the prices of commonly used vegetables have come down in the local market during the past four days.

"The transportation charges might have gone up but we are selling vegetables at the same price, since there is no change in the prices in the wholesale market," said a Sector 20 vegetable vendor, adding that the prices were rather coming down on account of good crop of some of vegetables this year.

A kg of cauliflower, priced at Rs 15 a kg last week, could be had today for Rs 12 in the retail market. The price has come down from Rs 60 to Rs 45 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. Similarly, cabbage was available at a relatively low price of Rs 10 a kg in the retail and Rs 40 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Brinjal could be had for Rs 6 a kg in the retail and for Rs 20 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. Lady's finger was, however, priced at a bit higher price of Rs 20 a kg in the retail and Rs 80 per 5 kg in the wholesale market as compared to its earlier price of Rs 15 and Rs 60, respectively.

The price of ginger has also come down considerably, particularly in the wholesale market where it was priced at Rs 75 per 5 kg. The retail price varied between Rs 25 and Rs 30 a kg. Tomato was also cheaper at Rs 10 a kg in the retail and at Rs 40 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

On the other hand, there was a rise in the prices of onion and some other vegetables despite a good crop. Though normal onion was priced at Rs 12 a kg, the good quality vegetable was available for Rs 14 a kg in the retail and for Rs 55 per 5 kg in the wholesale market even as the crop was said to be good this year.

Similarly, one could purchase a kg of peas for Rs 40 a kg in the retail and for Rs 170 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. The local variety of potato could be purchased for Rs 5 a kg in the retail and for Rs 15 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.Back

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21 — Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, trounced Stepping Stones School by 130 runs in the under-14 section of the Blessed Edmund Rice cricket tournament being played at St John's High School, Sector 26, here today. Siddharth of GMSSS-35 scored 66 runs.

The hosts made short work of Mt Carmel School, Sector 46, by 88 runs. In other matches, Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, defeated last year's winners St Kabir School, Sector 26, by 75 runs and Shivalik Public School, Sector 41 had a narrow win against Edmund Rice team by just six runs.

Judo championship: The Chandigarh state judo championship for sub-junior and junior boys and girls will begin tomorrow at Shri Harkishan Public School, Sector 38. The three-day championship is being organised by the Judo Association of Chandigarh. About 300 judokas will participate.

Inter-corporation cricket: Four teams from different corporations will take part in the Inter-corporation cricket tournament, which will be held at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, from October 23. The teams are Haryana Warehousing Corporation, Haryana Financial Corporation, Haryana State Industrial Corporation and Central Warehousing Corporation. The final will be played on November 13.

Taekwondo tourney: The Chandigarh open state taekwondo championship for coloured belts will be held on October 23 and 24 at Skating Rink, Sector 10. Entries close on October 23.

CBSE basketball: The Sector 21 Dev Samaj Senior Secondary Girls School will organise the Central Board of Secondary Education basketball tournament for under-19 girls from November 10 to 12. GGSSS-8 enter two finals

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21 — Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, reached the finals of under-14 and under-17 categories in the UT inter-school volleyball championship being played at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here today.

In under-14 section, GGSSS-8 overpowered Government High School, Sector 32, 25-21, 25-15 and GMHS-26 downed Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, 25-8, 25-10. In under-17 section, GGSSS-8 defeated Government Model High School, Sector 26, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21 and Government High School, Sector 32, whipped SGGSS-35 25-21, 25-18.

Results (under-19) — SDP-32 b GGSSS-23 25-2, 25-2; SGGSSS-35 b GMSS-33 25-4, 25-5; GGSSS-8 b Dev Samaj-21 25-10, 25-6.

In basketball, Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, blanked Shri Guru Harkishan Model School, Sector 38, 12-0 and Government Model High School, Sector 26, defeated Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, 23-0 in under-17 section. In under-19 section, Bhavan Vidyalaya School, Sector 27, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 16, 23-8. In under-14 section, Government Model High School, Sector 26, trounced Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, 11-0.

UT handball: Government Senior Secondary School, Maloya, will meet Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, in the under-17 final of the UT inter-school handball tournament being played at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, here today. GSSS-Maloya beat GMHS-29 3-1 and GGSSS-20 defeated GNPS-36 2-1.

In under-14 section, GNPS-36 defeated GGSSS-20 7-3 and SGGSSS-35 beat GMSSS-21 9-6 in the semi-finals. In under-19 section, SGGSSS-35 blanked GGSSS-8 13-0 and GGSSS-23 defeated GMSSS-215-3 in the semi-finals.

Inter-school kabaddi: Government High School, Sector 11, and Government Senior Secondary School, Dhanas, will meet in the final of the under-17 section of the UT inter-school kabaddi tournament. In under-19 section, GSSS-Dhanas and GGSSS-8 reached the final. Government High School, Sector 7, SGGSS-35, Government High School, Sector 40, and Government High School, Sector 25, made to the last four stage in the UT inter-school kabaddi championship.

SGGSSSS-35 win: Shri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, won the final of under-17 section of the UT inter-school hockey tournament, which was played at Hockey Stadium, Sector 18. In the final, SGGSSSS-35 defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 47, by a solitary goal.

Girls kho-kho: The UT inter-school kho-kho tournament for girls was played at the SGGSSSS-35. The following are the results.
