India pin hopes on spinners
KANPUR, Oct 21 — After lethal spin execution led by Anil Kumble and Sunil Joshi which devastated the Kiwis in Bangalore, India will expect a repeat from their spinners to effect a complete turnaround in form and fortunes when they take on New Zealand in the second cricket Test at the Green Park Stadium here tomorrow. If the Bangalore spin song sent the alarm bells ringing in the Kiwi camp, it gave Sachin Tendulkar-led India a reason enough to smile as their spinners were among wickets well before the battles ahead.

India pin hopes on spinners

KANPUR, Oct 21 (UNI) — After lethal spin execution led by Anil Kumble and Sunil Joshi which devastated the Kiwis in Bangalore, India will expect a repeat from their spinners to effect a complete turnaround in form and fortunes when they take on New Zealand in the second cricket Test at the Green Park Stadium here tomorrow.

If the Bangalore spin song sent the alarm bells ringing in the Kiwi camp, it gave Sachin Tendulkar-led India a reason enough to smile as their spinners were among wickets well before the battles ahead.

Apart from speedster Javagal Srinath who brought India back into the game after the harrowing first morning in the SAS Nagar Test, none of the bowlers really looked as if they had it in them to rock an international side. The main cause of disappointment was the gross lack of effectiveness of Indian spinners.

Even a bowler of the class of Kumble seemed to be struggling to make an impact in the first Test and the Indian skipper looked up to Srinath for breakthrough on the last day even though the wicket was not responding to seamers.

But one of the encouraging aspects of cricket is that the present makes one forget the past. So forget SAS Nagar. Kumble and Joshi, who rediscovered the virtues of a classical and orthodox approach with a sensational haul of five wickets for six runs against South Africa in the quadrangular tournament in Nairobi, have shown that they have not forgotten their wicket-taking skills when it mattered most.

A green top is not on offer at the Green Park Grounds. And, it suggests the inclusion of a third specialist spinner in the playing eleven.

This raises a hope for Harbhajan Singh who has an ability to bowl with a lot of variation. The Punjab right-arm off-spinner, who had a superb spell of four scalps on a lifeless Jodhpur track against the tourists, is not afraid to toss the ball and earn his wicket.

Vijay Bharadwaj, who emerged as a new star after the Nairobi episode and was later included in the Test squad as a replacement for former captain Mohammad Azharuddin, for all his merits in one-day version of the game does not seem to be a fully qualified Test class spinner at least now.

The Indian camp can toy with the idea of using Saurav Ganguly as a second seamer in place of Venkatesh Prasad, who is not a must on this bald track. Saurav was seen bowling briskly in two practice sessions. For Harbhajan’s inclusion there may be a toss between Bharadwaj and Prasad.

Thus team composition looks likely to emerge a tricky affair for newly-appointed coach Kapil Dev and captain Tendulkar with several options having to be considered. Undoubtedly, they will have a hard time deciding between experience and promise.

Though inconsistency has been a salient feature of the Indian cricket, SAS Nagar saw a remarkable application by the batsmen. The side that was shot out for 83 in the first innings ended up sniffing victory at the end. And it was for the first time in Test cricket history that a team skittled out for less than 100 runs came back to score five times more in the second essay.

Buoyed by their improved efforts in the SAS Nagar Test, Tendulkar and his crew look determined on the eve of match to keep up tempo and lift the game to erase bad memories and go one up in the series.

Onus again will be on the top five batsmen, who grafted and accumulated runs in the second innings of the first Test which exposed the limitation of New Zealand attack, to convert their good nick into a big score.

It appears that the hosts have found a reliable opening pairs in Sadagopan Ramesh and Devang Gandhi. Looking positive even in defence, Gandhi showed good application and played flawlessly. He may be a bonus as an off-break bowler at this slow wicket. Besides, one happy news cannot be ignored that Sachin’s unbeaten century in the Test opener has stopped the medical bulletin about his fitness problem.

After a disappointing SAS Nagar climax where the denial of a win could be attributed to a failure of strategy, the home side must have learnt lessons aplenty and would positively capitalise on them to avenge a 0-1 humiliation they had to face when the team visited New Zealand during last winter.

The Kiwis, who had said at the beginning of the tour that playing Indian spin would be a great challenge, must be in a pensive mood and thinking about the next strategy after their seven-wicket defeat against Ranji champions Karnataka. None of their batsman except skipper Stephen Fleming, who slammed an unbeaten century in the first innings of the three-day contest, negotiated spinners with confidence and their vulnerability to play spinners was palpable.

Stung by a below par effort in Bangalore, the black caps will be under pressure and spin scrutiny. After scrappy showing, Fleming’s men will have to raise their game by several notches.

Teams:

India (from): Sachin Tendulkar (captain), Sadagopan Ramesh, Devang Gandhi, Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly, Vijay Bharadwaj, M.S.K. Prasad (wk), Sunil Joshi, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Ajay Jadeja, Debashish Mohanty and Harbhajan Singh.

New Zealand (from): Stephen Fleming (captain), Matthew Bell, Matthew Horne, Craig Spearman, Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Chris Harris, Adam Parore (wk), Dion Nash, Chris Cairns, Shayne O’Connor, Andrew Penn, Chris Drum, Paul Wiseman and Daniel Vettori.

Team will play a ‘positive game’

KANPUR, Oct 21 (UNI) — Disappointed with the performance of the Mohali Test, coach Kapil Dev and skipper Sachin Tendulkar today asserted that the Indian team will play a positive game in the second Test against New Zealand starting here tomorrow to earn result in a bid to go one up in the three-Test cricket series.

Talking to newspersons after a gruelling practice session here today, Kapil and Sachin insisted “Whatever type of track we get, our approach will be to go for the kill. We want to win irrespective of the nature of wicket.”

“Both teams must play to get results,” the world-record holder for most Test wickets hoped, adding that getting outcomes was the only way to bring people back to watch Test matches.”

Sachin, who was disappointed after New Zealand held on to force a draw in the first cricket Test, said: “One of the positive aspects of the Mohali Test was that the boys did not give up. This quality will help the team to take an edge over the Kiwis, who miserably lost to Ranji champions Karnataka in the three-day match at Bangalore, he added.

About the spin attack led by leg-spinner Anil Kumble and Sunil Joshi, Sachin said: “The Karnataka bowling attack was basically the Indian bowling line-up.”

Sachin, who seemed happy with the Green Park track, said: “We will try to score a big total to give a chance to spinners to exploit the track.”

He said: “Players should not worry about pressure and should rather strive to give their best shots.”

On his fitness, Sachin said: “I am happy with my condition.”

About the strategy for tomorrow’s second Test match, he echoed Kapil’s words — “enjoy cricket to perform better.”

“My advice to players is to play from the heart, when they are in the field, they have to focus on the game,” said Kapil for whom this is the second Test as Indian coach.

He said: “All I can say is that I am with them to ease their tension, not to create it. I am trying to guide them. However, they are so good and confident that I do not really know how much of my assistance do they need.”

Kapil hoped that the boys will play to their potential and translate it into a winning formula.

“They have a lot of hard work to do in the next five days. They will have to start at zero each morning and get 100 per cent result by the end of the day.”

Sugiyama upsets Pierce; Kafelnikov survives

MOSCOW, Oct 21 (AP) — Ai Sugiyama upset first-seeded Mary Pierce 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round of the Kremlin Cup with the French woman apparently hobbled by back pains.

Seventh-seeded Sandrine Testud also was ousted early, losing in an upset to Silvia Farina of Italy 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.

Sugiyama, ranked 27th in the world, kept a slow-moving Pierce, the defending champion, trapped in the corners with sharp cross-court backhands that the World No. 6 could not touch in the match played here yesterday.

Pierce’s troubles started early. She went down three games to one in the first set and Sugiyama did not give her a point in the eighth game, closing out the set as the ball ricocheted wildly off Pierce’s racket into the stands behind her.

In the second, Pierce scraped back from love-40 to hold her serve in the first game. But with her lower back apparently bothering her, Pierce then spent several minutes on the sideline on her stomach as her trainer massaged her.

Pierce broke Sugiyama in the fourth game and allowed no points in the fifth. In the ninth, she fought off deuce to put away the set on a Sugiyama net ball.

After that, however, Pierce’s fortunes again took a turn for the worse. She kept up until her fourth serve, when Sugiyama trapped her in the left corner with cross-court backhands and held Pierce at 15.

She made a final stand down three games to five, bringing Sugiyama to deuce on powerful baseline shots, but was run around the court and lost to a Sugiyama blast down the righthand side.

LYON (France): Second-seeded Todd Martin of the USA tumbled out of the Lyon Grand Prix, dropping a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 decision to Sweden’s Magnus Gustafsson.

Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia survived a similarly troublesome second-round match yesterday, overcoming American qualifier Richey Reneberg 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Martin, winless since reaching the final of the US Open, put up little resistance in the opening set against the 74th-ranked Gustafsson.

But with the crowd turning against Gustafsson — who alienated them when he plopped down on the court waiting for spectators to sit before serving Martin seemed to refocus.

Lifted by the crowd, the American rallied back to level the match at a set each. In the third set, with a freshly bound ankle, Martin, a career-high No. 4 in the rankings, seemed poised for victory storming to a 4-1 lead.

Martin’s game began to unravel when a determined Gustafsson dug deep to take the next five consecutive games, jumping into the air in jubilation as Martin hit into the net on match point.

Currently sixth on the road to Hannover, Martin will need strong performances in his upcoming tournaments if he hopes to retain his current position at the World Championships.

Kafelnikov, who has already secured a berth in Hannover is currently focused on overtaking Andre Agassi to finish the season as the top-ranked player.

The Russian is hoping the tournament will act as a spring board, especially because Agassi is not defending the points he won last year in the Czech Indoors.

The Russian, who reached the round of four in Basel two weeks ago and won in Vienna on Sunday, has failed to win three straight matches since advancing to the semis of the US Open.

Fifth-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden, the losing finalist to Chile’s Marcelo Rios in Singapore on Sunday.

Haas, who reached the final the last two years, had been out of action for the past three weeks due to a toe injury.

Swedish players continued to wreak havoc in the second round, with Magnus Larsson toppling two-time champion Marc Rosset of Switzerland 6-2, 6-2. Larsson will meet Kafelnikov in the quarterfinals.

Mahadevan, Sridhar bow out

MUMBAI, Oct 21 (PTI) — The Indian challenge in first leg of the ITF Satellite tennis circuit tournament ended with sixth seed Vinod Shridar and Manoj Mahadevan bowing out in men’s singles quarterfinals here today.

The 20-year-old Shridar went down fighting to third seed Radim Zitko of the Czech Republic 4-6, 4-6 in one hour 32 minutes, while Mahadevan was drubbed 1-6, 0-6 by qualifier Thomas Messmer of Germany in just 41 minutes.

Lucky loser Kunj Majmudar, an American of Indian origin, needed one hour 12 minutes to down qualifier Matthis Kempe-Bergman of Germany 6-2, 6-4 while fourth seed Per Thornadtsson of Sweden pipped American Tom Chicoine 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in just over two hours.

In the Zitko-Shridar match, the former came up with some superb double fisted passing shots on either ranks which left the Indian gasping.

The games went with serves in the first set till the sixth game. A few unforced errors in the seventh game found the Indian drop his serve to trail 3-4. Zitko, who was gaining in confidence, held his serve in the eighth game and then served out the set at 6-4.

The Chennai-based Shridar had his chances in the second set when he broke his opponent in the second game to lead 2-0. However, the Indian’s joy was shortlived as he failed to hold his serve in the next game.

The Indian looked in trouble when he dropped his serve in the fifth game to trail 2-3 but bounced back into the set with a break in the sixth game to level scores at 3-all.

However, Zitko got the crucial break in the ninth game to lead 5-4 and then served out the match. Shridar saved a match point but his return off Zitko’s next serve was too long.

Mahadevan found Messmer too hot to handle and could win just one game in the entire match when he held his serve in the third game of the first set.

In the Majmudar-Kempe-Bergman match, the former looked in total command from the word go. He was faster and fitter than his opponent and served with a lot of power and deep which the German found hard to return.

With a break in the fourth game, Majmudar led 3-1 in the first set. He dropped his serve in the next game but still led 3-2. However, with breaks in the sixth and eighth games the American won 6-2.

In the second, the German broke Majmudar in the first game but failed to hold his own serve in the next. The German again broke the American in the seventh game but again too many errors crept into his returns and dropped his serve in the eighth game and scores were level at 4-all.

Majmudar held his serve in the ninth game and then broke his rival in the tenth game to take the set and with it the match at 6-4.

In the semi-finals tomorrow, Majmudar will play Zitko while Messmer will take on Thornadtsson.

In the doubles quarter-finals, third seeds Mustafa Ghouse and Vishal Uppal of India pipped their compatriot Saurav Panja and Anand Radhakrishnan 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour 20 minutes.

Results (men’s singles) quarter-finals: Thomas Messmer (Ger) bt Manoj Mahadevan (Ind) 6-1, 6-0, Per Thornadtsson (Swe) bt Tom Chicoine (USA) 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, Kunj Majmudar (USA) bt Matthis Kempe-Bergman (Ger) 6-2, 6-4, Radim Zitko (Cze) bt Vinod Shridar (Ind) 6-4, 6-4.

Doubles quarter-finals: Mustafa Ghouse/ Vishal Uppal (Ind) bt Saurav Panja/ Anand Radhakrishnan (Ind) 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Syed Fazaluddin (Ind)/ Niko Karagiannis (Gre) bt Doug Abraham/ Lee Harang (USA) 6-4, 6-2.

Prakash makes it easy for Chandigarh team

NEW DELHI, Oct 21 (UNI) — Riding on the brilliance of striker Prakash Chaudhary, who scored five goals in a row Ishwar Singh Dev Samaj School, Chandigarh trounced Govt Adrash School, Durg (M.P), 6-1 to set up a title clash with Govt High School, Ranchi in the 6th Nehru Girls Hockey Tournament here today.

The second semifinal of the day was a stark contrast to the first as Ranchi school had to wage a grim battle to oust Birsamunda Vidyapitha, Rourkela (Orissa) 1-0.

In a totally one sided contest, Chandigarh girls piled up unassailable 5-0 lead against Durg team in the first half.

Chandigarh took the lead in the very first minute through Annu Chaudhary and after that Prakash Chaudhary took over slamming four goals in a space of 23 minutes.

Prakash scored her first and team’s second goal in the 6th minute and then made it 3-0, 18 minutes later.

She completed her hat trick three minutes later (4-0) and then took the tally to 5-0 in the 29th minute.

Both the teams played fast and attacking hockey and there were numerous moves and counter moves.

It was only in the second minute of the second half, that striker Prem Shaila Kujur capitalised on the defensive lapse of the rivals to sent the ball into the cage and that proved to be the winner for Ranchi side.

‘We have not stopped playing against Pak’

CHENNAI, Oct 21 (PTI) — “Cricket is a sport and we have not stopped playing against Pakistan”, Indian cricket board chief A.C. Muthiah said yesterday.

Addressing a press conference here on the national and international cricket scene, Mr Muthiah said the board did not get any directive on playing against Pakistan and added “we did not play them in Toronto as we felt so during that moment of Kargil crisis”.

He said “we are scheduled to play them in a Triangular series during our tour of Australia from November 1999 to February 2000”.

The board would be giving greater thrust to domestic cricket and a decision on national players’ mandatory participation in it would be announced soon, he said.

Stating that greater emphasis would be laid on physical fitness of all cricketers in different levels, Mr Muthiah said all the state units of the board would have physios attached to their respective teams and the best five physios among them would be sent abroad by the board for further training.

On the delayed start of the first day’s play of the first test at Mohali between India and New Zealand, Mr Muthiah said “the board is awaiting the report of the match referee and action, if any, will depend on that”.

On instadia security to avoid crowd invasion of pitches, Mr Muthiah said the International Cricket Council (ICC) had laid down important guidelines and staging units had been asked to adhere to them.

Explaining the ICC instructions, Mr Muthiah said the member countries had been told to prohibit consumption of alcohol inside stadia, make safety arrangements for spectators, players and officials, and give police control over these matters.

Host associations had been told to inform the public that their country would lose its international status with the ICC for any lapse in implementing these guidelines, he added.

On the number of matches to be played by Indian cricketers, Mr Muthiah said the ICC had laid down certain rules and “we have not over-shot the stipulations”.

Innings win for Punjab
From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Oct 21 — Rattled by the hosts batsmen and then done in by its bowlers on the first day itself Punjab did not face any problems in decimating Jammu and Kashmir by an innings and 117 runs in the North Zone inter state league match for the Cooch Behar Trophy at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium here today.

After putting up a totally timid and uninspired display on the opening day, J and K were expected to cast aside its weariness and disappointment of yesterday’s play. But on the contrary J and K came up with yet another pathetic show from their batsmen. Resuming from their overnight total of 15 for 5, fortunately for J and K, their tail wagged merrily to enable the team cross the three-figure mark.

Following on, the Punjab bowlers again put them on a tight leash and bundled them for just 155 runs giving themselves a morale boosting innings and 117 run-win.

For long, J and K have come to be known as the ‘whipping boys’ on North Zone cricket in all grades — be it the Ranji Trophy, Cooch Behar Trophy or even the Vijay Merchant Trophy (U-16) and with their performance in this match the tag of being labelled as the ‘‘whipping boys’’ remains intact. So disastrous was the display of the visitors that they were beaten beaten outright before tea on the second day of the three-day match.

With today’s win, the hosts have garnered the maximum of eight points which will definitely hold them in good stead when the going gets tough in the remaining league matches against Haryana and Delhi.

Brief scores:

Punjab (Ist innings): 375 for 3.

J and K (Ist innings): 103 all out (Inderjit Singh 32, Gagandeep Singh 4 for 22, Amit Uniyal 4 for 37).

J and K (IInd innings): 155 all out (Charanjit 34, Sanjay Dhul 5 for 51, Sandeep Sanwal 3 for 53).

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21 — Desh Prem Azad, Dronacharya awardee, in a representation to Sheikh Abdul Rehman Bukhatir, who several year ago started Cricketer Benefit Fund Series — a scheme to provide monetary benefits to cricketer from India, Pakistan and some other countries — has stressed on the need to include coaches also in the scheme.

Lauding Bukhatir for doing a yeoman’s service for cricketers, he demanded that similar scheme should be drawn for the coaches because “coaches in this part of world are not paid much.”

Feroz Ali, Maqbool share lead
From Our Sports Reporter

FARIDABAD, Oct 21 — Feroz Ali and Mohd Maqbool were tied on summit with seven under 65 on the opening day of the four-day Rs 6 lakh Aravalli-Shell Golf Championship at the Aravalli course here today.

Harmeet Kahlon, who turned pro recently, was placed on third spot with four under 68.

Feroz Ali played virtually unblemished round. Starting with a birdie, he was unlucky to have missed hole-in-one by two inches on par-3 4th.

“I played a pitching wedge and the ball, after landing on the green, rolled to within two inches from the pin to deny me the rare feet”, said Feroz Ali.

Undismayed by this, Feroz Ali went on to play superbly with a few more birdies. His only bogey came on the 13th owing to missed chip-putt.

Maqbool was equally in dazzling form. He birdied on nine holes and bogeyed only the 7th and the 14th. But for these two lapses, he would have been sitting pretty on the top all by himself. He said that he should have played at least nine under.

Kahlon carded birdies on the 4th and the 8th, a missed eagle chance on 10th, 11th and 13th. He bogeyed on the 6th and the 14th. He missed birdie-putts on the 7th and the 17th but he seemed happy at his performance.

Scores: Feroz Ali and Maqbool 65; Harmeet Kahlon 68; Basad Ali 69; Vishal Singh, Rafiq Ali and Digvijay Singh 70; Amit Dubte 71. G.S. Parmar and Vijay Kumar caded seven over 79 to jointly lead among amateurs.
