AMRITSAR
Looted:
Two scooter borne youth allegedly snatched some amount from Gurmit Singh, a resident of Kakar Kalan, near Kotla Duma village under Rajasansi police station of the district on Wednesday. A police spokesman said here that the victim was going to his village after drawing the amount from a bank, when two youth armed with a pistol looted the money. A case has been registered.

FEROZEPORE
Dharna:
Members of the District unit of INTUC and the Punjab Subordinate Services Federation (PSSF) staged a joint dharna outside the Labour Commissioner's office on Wednesday. Their demands included implementation of labour laws, regularisation of the services of workers who have worked for 240 days in service, abolition of contract system in the government and semi government departments.

JALANDHAR
Raped:
An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Bundala village under Nurmahal police station, the police said here on Tuesday. The victim told the police that she was enticed away by the accused on the pretext that he would treat her with "golgappas". The police has registered a case of kidnapping and rape under Sections 363, 366, 376 and 511 of the IPC against Harbans Lal on the statement of the victim’s mother.

KAPURTHALA
Pistols recovered:
The local CIA staff intercepted a jeep during a nakabandi on Kapurthala-Jalandhar road near Wadala village on Tuesday and seized two pistols along with two cartridges. According to Mr Jaskirat Singh Chahal, SP, (Detective) the accused have been identified as Vijay Kumar of Sund village, and Rakesh Kumar of Kultham village from Nawanshahr district.

KHANNA
Foundation stone:
Mr S.P.Oswal, Chairman, Vardhman Group of companies, laid the foundation stone of the career guidance centre at the local A.S. College here on Thursday. The Rs 6 lakh project is being set up by the A.S. College Alumni Association. Mr Boota Singh, President of the Association, thanked Mr S.P. Oswal for donating a sum of Rs 2 lakh for the purpose.

LUDHIANA
Accident:
A nine-year-old boy, Rajiv, died in a road accident in the Field Ganj area here on Tuesday. According to the police, Rajiv, had fallen off his bicycle after hitting a woman and was run over by a truck.

Convention: The Punjab Chapter of the All India Save Education Committee has decided to hold a state-level convention here, on December 5, to discuss the problems faced by the present educational system in the state. At the meeting educationists and intellectuals were of the view that commercialisation, communalisation, indifferent attitude of the teachers and lack of sensitivity on the part of the bureaucracy and political leadership were the main reasons for the collapse of educational system in Punjab.

MOGA
Shop gutted:
Goods worth several thousand of rupees were destroyed in a fire which broke out in a shop of Mr Banarsi Das in the main bazaar of Baghapurana town in the district on Monday.

PATIALA
Eye camp:
The 36th eye camp was organised by the Basant Ritu Youth Club, Tripri, in Kashmiri gurudwara. As many as 415 patients were examined on the occasion. Free medicines were also distributed. Seventeen patients suffering from various eye ailments were operated upon. Mr K.S. Kang, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, was the chief guest, according to Mr Rajesh Sharma, President of the club.

SAMRALA
Office-bearers:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Lions Club: President — Mr Rajeev Singh Mangat; Vice-Presidents — Mr Deepak Verma, Mr Gurtej Pal Singh and Dr Ranvir Salwahan; Secretary — Mr Sandeep Bharti; Joint Secretary — Dr Rajinder Thareja; and Treasurer — Mr Rajesh Singla.

Medical practitioners: More than 60 unauthorised medical practitioners practising in the different villages of the tehsil have gone underground. Eight medical practitioners, arrested on Tuesday, were produced in the court of Mr Paramjit Singh. Two of them were released after they presented the valid licence before the court. Six of them were released on bail after they submitted a bond of Rs 20,000.

Accident: Mr Kulwant Singh, a Clerk in the local Primary Land Mortgage Bank was killed in a road accident on Tuesday at Rajewal village, 5 km from here. The deceased was the son of Mr Harchand Singh Alipur, a former Chairman of the local Land Mortgage Bank and Chairman of the Block Samiti, Machhiwara.

SANGRUR
Medical staff:
As many as 37 teams of medical staff, including three mobile teams, have been constituted to administer pulse polio drops to 80,000 children below the age of five during the pulse polio campaign to be launched from October 24 to 26 in the town and its adjoining areas, according to Dr Anup Kad, Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of the local civil hospital.

Nominated: Dr Amrish Mittal, has been nominated as the member of the managing body of the Punjab state branch of the Indian Red Cross Society by the Punjab Government for two years.

Honour: The Parent-Teacher Association, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35-D, will honour brilliant students at a function on Saturday. The students whose names figured in the merit list of the middle standard examination and those who secured more than 80 per cent marks in the matriculation examination will be given cash prizes.

DERA BASSI
Eye camp:
The Charitable Bunga Trust will organise its ninth free eye camp at Saidpura village on the Dera Bassi-Barwala road from October 23 to 30. Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, Deputy Commissioner, Patiala, will be the chief guest. A pulse polio camp will also be organised on October 24.

KHARAR
Doctor booked:
The local police has registered a case against Manmohan Singh who was running a clinic at nearby Jhungian village without having any degree or diploma. The case has been registered on the complaint by the Civil Surgeon, Ropar.

PANCHKULA
Kargil fund:
Saupins School, Sector 9, contributed Rs 62,199 towards the Kargil fund here on Thursday. The amount was handed over to the Commandant, Command Hospital, Major-Gen Virendra Singh. The Principal, Mrs J. Saupin, said that the school would organise cultural programmes on national integration and patriotism.

BHIWANI
Balmiki Jayanti:
Balmiki Jayanti will be celebrated at Jind on October 24. Mrs Santosh Chauhan Sarwan, a former minister and Chief Convenor of the celebrations said here on Wednesday that the Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, would be the chief guest at the function, slated to be held at the foodgrain market.

ROHTAK
Police seizures:
The district police has recovered stolen items worth Rs 3.04 lakh after solving various cases of dacoity and theft committed during the month of September. According to the police chief, Mr P.K. Agrawal, nearly 30 cases of theft, two of snatching and one of dacoity has been solved. The police has also recovered large quantity of smuggled liquor. The seizure included 2488 bottles of liquor, five bottles of IMFL and 9152 pouches of liquor.

SONEPAT
Water connections:
The Punjab Health Department will organise a function on October 23 at Panchayat Bhavan of the city in connection with the cleaning of the Yamuna besides providing new water and sewerage connections. According to Mr Sudhir Rajpal, Deputy Commissioner, the Minister of State for Public Health, Mr Jaswant Singh Bawal will be the chief guest.

Dharna: Residents of Harsana Kalan and neighbouring villages staged a dharna on the Sonepat-Rohtak road near Harsana village, 8 km from here on Wednesday to press for the repair of Bindrauli road and uninterrupted supply of water and electricity.

Power cut: The Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam on Wednesday enforced a four-hour power cut in the urban areas of the city. According to Mr S.K. Handa, S.E. (Operation) all essential services were exempted from the routine power cut.

Resentment: Representatives of various political parties, social and religious organisations on Thursday demanded the arrest of youths responsible for the molestation of three girls near the Ramlila ground on Kami road on the eve of Dasehra.

SIRSA
Liquor seized:
Gautam Singh Rajpoor of Kairanwali village was arrested in Dhukra village on Tuesday. The police seized 158 bottles of liquor from his possession. According to Mr Kameshver Kumar Mishra, SP, the police has arrested two other accused from various places of the district under the Excise Act and 28 bottles of liquor and 7 kg of lahan was also seized.

Contaminated milk: The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr Diwakar awarded one year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on Joginder Singh of Mandi Ellenabad here on Tuesday on a charge of selling substandard milk. Authorities of the health department had taken the sample of milk in 1994. One year of imprisonment and Rs 1,000 as fine was also awarded to Yasin Khan on Tuesday on the same charge .

Case registered: Harphool Nath and his relative Balwant Nath of Daulat Khera village were arrested by the Badagudha police on Tuesday in a criminal case registered against them on a complaint of Ms Amrita Bai. According to Mr Kameshver Kumar, SP, the victim had alleged that she was married to Harphool Singh on 14th April 1997 but accused has been victimising her for bringing insufficient-dowry.

BILASPUR
Elected:

Pulse polio camps: As many as 42,000 children upto the age of five years will be given pulse polio drops through 275 booths spread all over the district, on October 24, November 21, December 19 and January 23, next year. The Chief Medical Officer, Dr M.L Mahajan, said here on Wednesday that the voluntary organisations, panchayat leaders, mehila mandals and yuvak mandals had been urged to extend full cooperation in this endeavour.
