Anand is PUSU Chairman
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 22 — Munish Anand, a former president of the Panjab University Campus Students Council, was today nominated the Chairman of the Punjab University Students Union (PUSU).

Addressing mediapersons on the campus, the outgoing chairman, Gurwinder Singh Grewal, announced his decision to quit from the post and withdraw from active student politics. He said the executive body of PUSU had been dissolved and a new governing body at campus and college levels would be formed by next month. Paramjit Singh Sahi was appointed the acting President till the formation of the new body.

Grewal hoped that the organisation would continue its fight against violence and would bring peace on the campus. He called upon students organisations to collectively oppose the administration on common issues. He said PUSU would not associate with the Senate or Syndicate on students issues. The elected president of the students council should be nominated on both Senate and Syndicate for effective representation, he added.

Anand said during the current academic session, members of PUSU would strive to find solution to the existing problems on the campus. The main thrust would be to streamline the functioning of the office of Controller of Examinations and the Department of Youth Welfare.

He said they would try to ensure timely declaration of results by making the authorities announce the date of declaration of result along with the datesheet. The results of re-evaluation should be declared within 45 days, he said. They would also take up the demand of students of BSc (Hons) and Law with regard to a chance for improvement.

Anand said they would take up the issue of making the Youth Welfare Department more accountable in terms of activities organised and the amount actually spent. They would also try to revive cultural activities. The new members of PUSU at the college and department levels would be given a chance to give their viewpoint in functioning of the governing body on the campus.

Another issue on the agenda pertained to proper placement of students, particularly pass-outs of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, whose placement should be done along with students of Punjab Engineering College.

Anand said if the authorities concerned did not take up their memoranda and meetings on these issues seriously they wouldl be forced to launch an agitation to get them accepted in the larger interest of the student community.

Cultural Scene
Baba Sehgal launches new album
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 22 — Rap singer Baba Sehgal says he will not do another Hindi film. His only attempt at movies 'Ms 420' had bombed at the box office in 1998. The singer said he could not devote time to movies as they took a lot of time in production. The making of 'Ms 420' took about 5 years, he said.

Baba Sehgal who made his debut in 1991 with the album 'Thanda Thanda Pani', was in the city today to launch his 12th album 'Abb Main Vengaboy' which has come after a gap of a-year-and-a-half.

Baba said "This album brings to my fans something that they want from me — Rap — but with a difference. The album has more melody than my previous albums and I am sure it will be enjoyed by persons of all ages."

The album claims to be refreshingly international and pleasantly indigenous. Although all tracks have Baba's flavour, he has also tried to cross cultural boundaries. For instance, the song 'Haiya Ho' is inspired from a Bhojpuri folk song and the track "Ai Yai Yai Yo" is set to a traditional African beat. However, it remains to be seen how the album fares on the popularity charts when even well-established artists are finding it hard to retain their reputation in the wake of slump in the entertainment industry, especially in the Indian pop category. The music company which has brought out the album refused to comment on the slump and did not give an expected sale figure of the album.

Later in the night, a scheduled show at Chandigarh Club could not take off till 10.15 pm.Back
