Cairns leads New Zealands fightback KANPUR, Oct 22 (PTI) Indian bowlers led by pace spearhead Javagal Srinath rattled the Kiwis to negate their advantage of winning the toss, but a stubborn middle order led by all-rounder Chris Cairns enabled the visitors to fight back and post a modest 217 for seven at stumps on the opening day of the second Test match here today. The 30-year-old Srinath rocked the Kiwi top order in the morning to leave them tottering at 54 for 4 at lunch, but the Indian inability to fully drive home the advantage was evident as New Zealand recovered considerably in the next two sessions at the Green Park. The burly Cairns was unbeaten on 42 at stumps along with Dion Nash (batting 19) as the eighth wicket pair raised 45 runs off the spin trio of Anil Kumble, Sunil Joshi and Harbhajan Singh. The spinner looked frustrated despite bowling a tight line on a helpful track. Srinath, who clean bowled rival skipper Stephen Fleming to hoist his 150th Test scalp and finish with 3/44 on an unresponsive track, bowled with fire while Kumble, who sent down as many as 30 overs, finished the day with 2/66 with the Indians hoping to wrap up the Kiwi innings early tomorrow. Cairns, who walked in with New Zealand in dire straits at 130 for six, mixed caution with aggression in a near two and a half hour stay (108 balls, 5x4, 2x6) and with Nash defied the Indian attack for well over an hour. The bone dry pitch, which is already showing firm signs of helping the spinners to the utmost, was exploited to some extent by the slow bowlers, but a crucial 62-run sixth wicket stand between Nathan Astle (39) and Craig McMillan (34) in the afternoon followed by Adam Parores knock (35) prevented India from wiping out the lower order. The Kiwis added 87 runs in the post-lunch session and 76 from 32 overs in the final two hours for the loss of three wickets. Fleming won the crucial toss in the morning and promptly chose to bat first on a wicket of low bounce that rapidly showed signs of helping the spinners with both teams including an extra spinner at the expense of a medium-pacer. But it was the Indian pacemen who struck telling blows to leave the Kiwis gasping at 50 for four in the morning session before a fighting 62-run fifth wicket partnership between Nathan Astle (39 117 m, 85 b, 5x4) and Craig McMillan (34 78 m, 66 b, 4x4) enabled the visitors to stage a mini fightback in the afternoon. Srinath, having to plough a lone furrow as his regular new ball partner Venkatesh Prasad was omitted to include off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in a defensive move by the Indian team management, bowled splendidly to extract enough from the unresponsive pitch to harry the Kiwi batsmen. Saurav Ganguly, sharing the new ball, provided the initial breakthrough when he had opener Matt Horne caught behind by M.S.K. Prasad for five in the very fourth over of the day. Matt Bell, who had done little of note on this tour, along with Craig Spearman added 26 runs in a 42-minute stand but Anil Kumble, introduced in the 10th over of the morning, removed the latter to a tame bat-pad catch at forward shortleg. But it was Srinath, gaining a little bounce from the pitch, who struck telling blows immediately after coming on for his second spell of the morning to wreck the top order. The tall paceman, who had a fine match haul of eight for 108 in the first Test at Mohali, beat and bowled Fleming with an absolute beauty that swung into the left-hander as he went for an ambitious drive, to remove the batsman for the fifth time in eight Tests. The wicket also hoisted Srinath, playing his 40th match, into the 150 club of Indian bowlers, becoming the ninth to achieve the distinction. He celebrated it up by having Bell leg before as the batsman failed to offer a shot to a late inswinger. The dream second spell read 3-1-9-2. But both Astle and MacMillan showed their defiance by steadily accumulating runs into the afternoon session, which saw the Kiwis gather a healthy 87 from 32 overs after the snails pace at which they batted in the morning. The spin trio of Kumble,
Joshi and Harbhajan could not really shackle the pair as
they added 62 runs for the fifth wicket to give the score
a somewhat healthy look. |

At joint second, three strokes behind with six-under 138 were brothers Feroz and Rafiq Ali Jaipur-based pro Vishal Singh played a superb round of golf carding as many as seven birdies. After paring the first two holes, Vishal who carded three-under 69 yesterday, posted a hat-trick of birdies these coming on the 3rd, 4th, where his 10 feet putt was set up by a fine 7-Iron shot and the 5th. A bogey on the 7th, did little to dampen his confidence as the golfer did his sponsors Samodh Palace proud by scoring back-to-back birdies on the 8th and 9th and then again on the 16th and 17th. My putting helped me score better today said Vishal who tallied 24 putts today. Now, I feel I can win he added. Rafiq Ali carried on from where he had left off yesterday, taking off with a fine birdie on the 1st a hat-trick of birdies on the 5th, 6th and 7th, placed the Calcutta-based pro at four-under before making the turn. Had I played at my normal pace, I am certain I would have carded at least six-under, he added. Overnight joint leader Feroz Ali was inconsolable at the end of his round. Playing his front-nine to one-under, with a birdie on the 7th, the 98 Indian Open winner was all set to further consolidate his position, when his ball got wedged in a 3 feet footmark on a bunker on the 12th. Losing confidence and form therefrom the current leader on the Mahindra Order of Merit, dropped shots on the 13th and 16th, before finishing one-over 73 with a birdie on the 18th. Chandigarh girls beaten in final NEW DELHI, Oct 22 (PTI) Government Girls High School, Ranchi, thrashed favourites Ishwar Singh Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, 4-0 to lift the Sixth Nehru Girls (under-17) Hockey Cup here today. The powerful Ranchi outfit who dominated throughout the final opened the account when its centre forward Sushma Kiran Minj fielded in the 22nd minute. Unlike their previous games, Chandigarh today began with a defensive approach which cost them dearly as it lost ground due to complacency at the start. Combining speed, skill and energy, the Bihar team consolidated the lead when Prem Sheila Kujur converted a penalty corner in the 37th minute. Minj, who was adjudged Geeta Bajaj best player of the tournament, again found nets from the edge of D in the 42nd minute. Skipper Anita Ekka provided able support in the frontline, striking a pass from Guddi Kumari into the nets in the 58th minute. The Bihar outfit was in its element as it not only displayed a brilliant combination of aggression and skill but also scored which their Chandigarh counterparts could not. Chandigarhs star
campaigner, Prakash Chaudhary, was not able to capitalise
on good moves as she found almost no support from
teammates inside the rival penalty area. |
