Pak bid to capture post
NEW DELHI, Aug 31 (PTI) — Army today repulsed a Pakistan attempt to capture a post in Pallanwala sector in Jammu division killing five Pakistani soldiers but losing two of its jawans. In the heavy exchange of firing, two Indian jawans were killed and three injured, an Army spokesman said. Pakistani rangers started heavy and unprovoked firing on Indian positions from across the Line of Control (LoC) at 4 p.m., he said, adding under the cover of heavy firing of small arms, rockets and mortars Pakistani rangers tried to capture the Pallanwala post which was effectively repulsed.

Janmashtami telecast live
NEW DELHI, Aug 31 (UNI) — Doordarshan is to telecast the celebrations to mark the birth of Lord Krishna from Mathura and Dwarka on Janmashtami. The live telecast from Mathura will commence at 11.50 p.m. on September 3, and will be followed by the deferred live telecast from Dwarka from 12.30 a.m. Both the telecasts will be on the national network (DD one).

"Othello" bags award
NEW DELHI, Aug 31 (PTI) — A city-based theatre group, United Players Guild, has bagged a much coveted "First Fringe" award in Edinburgh for its "Othello: A play in black and white", an adaptation of Shakespeare’s "Othello". "Othello", staged by Roysten Abel’s company, is the first independent multilingual Indian production at the Fringe in Edinburgh and won the international award amid stiff competition, a British High Commission release here today said.

Two beheaded
NAGPUR, Aug 31 (PTI) — A youth beheaded his 65-year-old aunt over some property dispute and also cut off the head of a man who saw him running away with her head in Khapa near here in Maharashtra yesterday, the police said today. The youth first axed to death his aunt Durgabai Biskoya and was seen by Basanta Khandate when he was carrying her severed head. He then chased the witness and also beheaded him in another village near Mouda.

Gandhian dead
NEW DELHI, Aug 31 (PTI) — Renowned Gandhian social worker, thinker and this year’s Jamnalal Bajaj award winner Dr Devendra Kumar died in Mumbai today, family sources said here. He was 75. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. His body will be flown to Wardha tomorrow for funeral on September 2.

Phoolan's papers
LUCKNOW, Aug 31 (PTI) — The nomination papers of Samajwadi Party candidate Phoolan Devi for the Mirzapur Lok Sabha seat, which had been withheld yesterday following objections raised on her candidature, were cleared today. An election office spokesman said here the district returning officer found nothing objectionable in the candidature of Phoolan Devi and she could contest elections

JALPAIGURI, Aug 31 (UNI) — Two Bodo militants have been arrested from Joygaon in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. According to SP, Jalpaiguri, acting on a tip-off, the Assam Police along with state police, raided their hideout.

ISTANBUL, Aug 31 (AP) — A powerful earthquake of magnitude 5.2 and after shock hit northwest Turkey today, terrifying survivors of the devastating quake two weeks ago and further damaging some weakened buildings. No injuries or deaths were immediately reported.

CALCUTTA, Aug 31 (UNI) — Pravrajika Mokshaprana Mataji, the second President of Sri Sarada Math and Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, died at a city nursing home early today. She was 82.
