Albright-Barak talks fail
JERUSALEM, Sept 3 (AFP) — Late night talks between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright failed to yield an Israeli-Palestinian agreement on implementing the Wye River peace deal, Barak’s office said today. The ‘‘Americans continue their efforts to assist in a conclusion to negotiations with the Palestinians to enable the signing of an agreement,’’ said a statement from Barak’s office released after discussions between Barak, Albright and their teams.

Prophet's relic
ISTANBUL, Sept 3 (AFP) — Thieves have stolen the hair of Prophet Mohammad from an Istanbul mosque where the relic was kept, Anatolia news agency reported today. The imam of the Little Saint Sofia mosque reported the theft to the police when he returned from a holiday, the agency said. The relics of the Prophet were brought from Egypt to Istanbul in the early 16th century by Sultan Selim I after the Ottoman empire took over the Caliphate from Mohammad's successors.

Border firing
JAISALMER, Sept 3 (UNI) — Unprovoked firing by Pakistani Rangers across the international border in the Karanpur sector of Bikaner district since early morning has created tension along the Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan. According to BSF sources, several Pakistani Rangers were believed to have been killed or wounded in the return fire by the BSF jawans as the Rangers were seen removing their injured and dead. However, the exact number was not known. No loss of life was suffered by the BSF, the sources added.

50 bombs seized
HYDERABAD, Sept 3 (UNI) — The police has arrested three Congress workers and seized 50 countrymade bombs from them near Nandipallie Rossroads in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh last evening. The police intercepted a jeep in which a Congress worker, P. Pulla Reddy, was travelling and seized the bombs stored in three plastic buckets. On interrogation he confessed to transporting the bombs from Khajipet to Badvel town.

3 labourers dead
JAIPUR, Sept 3 (PTI) — Three labourers were killed today and two others injured when a portion of a stone quarry collapsed on two tractor trailers on which the stone was being loaded at Kalwar 25 km from here, the police said. Search and rescue operations were on to ascertain if any labourer was trapped under the debris it said. The deceased were identified as Gopal, Sharavan and Nanak and the injured had been rushed to the local hospital.

4 Killed
MUMBAI, Sept 3 (PTI) — Four persons were killed and some others injured when the balcony on which they were standing to watch Janmashtami celebrations, collapsed here this evening. According to the police, the victims, who were standing on the third floor of Daya Mansion near Hindmata Cinema at Dadar in central Mumbai to watch breaking of the traditional ‘‘dahi handi’’, were crushed after the gallery collapsed.
