Panchayat revokes boycott of LS
poll SONEPAT, Sept 3 Inhabitants of nine villages belonging to Dahiya Chaubeesee held a panchayat at Nahra village, about 25 km from here, yesterday to reconsider an earlier decision about the boycotting of the Lok Sabha elections in view of the non-acceptance of their demands and failure of the political parties to redress their grievances. Several leaders of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), including Mr Suraj Mal Antil, MLA (Rai), were also present. Mr Antil appealed to the people not to boycott the elections. He assured them that the present government, headed by Mr Om Praskash Chautala, would remove their grievances within two months. He also urged the people to vote in favour of the BJP-INLD candidate, Mr Kishan Singh Sangwan. Several people at the panchayat alleged that the people of the area had been neglected by the successive governments. Many youths were of the view that if the decision to boycott the elections was revoked at this stage, it would prove harmful for the people of the area. Some elders, however, demanded that the decision to boycott the elections should be withdrawn immediately. Amidst opposition from
the youths, the panchayat passed a resolution withdrawing
the decision to boycott the elections. |

Long wait for mini
secretariat PANIPAT, Sept 3 Though the foundation stone for a mini secretariat here was laid about 10 years ago, the construction work is yet to start. Even the foundation stone which was laid by Mr Bhajan Lal, the then Chief Minister, is missing. The Defence Ministry has claimed that the land on which the mini secretariat is proposed to be constructed, belongs to them and so it has been opposing the construction work. The Ministry has demanded another piece of land in lieu of it. After the new Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, took over, people of the district have renewed their demand for the construction of the mini secretariat. Some want that the secretariat should be constructed at the same place where the foundation stone was laid as the site is almost in the heart of the Panipat city. Some are of the view that it should be constructed at the place of the local bus stand which should be shifted to some other place away from the crowded G.T. road as it would help in minimising accidents and lessen traffic rush. Though the Central
Government has given its sanction for the construction of
a 7-km-long flyover on the G.T. Road here. But this
project is unlikely to be undertaken because of high
cost. |
