BATHINDA
Plea:
As many as 60 members of the Punjab State Veterinary Officer’s Association on Wednesday demanded that elections of the district bodies should be held immediately. In a press note issued here, Dr Ashok Gupta, secretary of the association, said members also refused to accept Dr G.S. Chahal as the president of body.

FEROZEPORE
Best teacher award:
The Principal of D.C. Model Senior Secondary School, Mrs Kanta Gupta, was conferred with the best teacher award by the local Lions Club (Greater), on Tuesday.

HOSHIARPUR
Body found:
The body of Avtar Singh Mistry (45), a resident of Pandori Baba Ram Dass village, was recovered at Pandori Khajoor, 9 km from here, on Tuesday. The Sadar police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC.

Dharna: Members of Christian community staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Wednesday in protest against the recent killings of Christians in Orissa. They also presented a memorandum to the DC.

LUDHIANA
Urge:
In a telegram set to the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr M.S. Gill, an independent candidate from this parliamentary constituency, Mr Abdul Shakoor, has urged him to intervene and replace the Punjab police with either the BSF or the CRPF for guarding the ballot boxes. He alleged that the police was working under the orders of the SAD-BJP alliance.

MOGA
Murder solved:
The district police on Wednesday claimed to have solved the murder case of Gurmail Singh, a resident of Ganda Kheri village, near Rajpura, with the arrest of Manjit Singh, Dalwinder Singh and Harwinder Singh. The three accused have hired Varinder Singh and Jaspal Singh Kala for the job. The cause of murder was stated to be a property dispute.

Accidents: A woman resident of Budhsinghwala village under Baghapurana police station in the district was killed by a speeding vehicle near Smalsar village, 16 km from here, on Wednesday. Similarly, an aged man was also crushed to death, 44 km from here on the Moga-Ludhiana road. Bodies of the deceased have been send for the post-mortem examination.

PATHANKOT
Camp:
A free eye and dental check-up camp was organised by the Lions Club (Greater) in Government Primary School at Abrol on Tuesday. Nearly 500 students attended the camp. Fifty eye patients and 20 patients suffering from dental problems were examined. Medicines were also distributed on the occasion.

SAMANA
Patients examined:
The local Lions and Leo Club organised a free eye camp at S.D. Model School on Thursday. Nearly 990 patients were examined and 89 were operated for cataract. Food and medicines were also distributed on the occasion.

Celebration: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness will celebrate Radha Ashtmi at Hare Krishna Dham, Sector 36-B, on Saturday.

KHARAR
Salaries: The staff of Christian High School has not been paid salaries for the last five months, according to a press note issued by some employees of the school. They have appealed to the Education Minister, Punjab, to look into the matter.

Camp: The Lions Club will organise a free eye operation camp at the Civil Hospital on September 25 and 26. According to Major B.R. Anand, President of the club, patients will be given free medicines and food.

Spiritual assembly: The Bahai art group for communal harmony and world peace held a spiritual assembly of Bahais at Bhavan Vidyalaya on Thursday. Skits, dances and songs were organised.

SAS NAGAR
Hoardings removed: The Municipal Council launched a drive to implement the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court pertaining to removal of hoardings and encroachments from corridors in markets on Thursday. The drive began with the clearing up of boards and hoardings in Phase I and went upto Phase VII.

Inauguration: The Shri Guru Ravidas Diamond Temple will be inaugurated in the premises of Shri Guru Ravidas Bhavan, Phase VII, on Saturday.top

ROHTAK
Pensions distributed:
The Zila Samaj Kalyan Vibhag has distributed Rs 54.87 lakh as old age, widow and disability pensions among 54,873 persons in August. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, said this here on Wednesday. He said Rs 7.85 lakh was disbursed among 570 handicapped students studying in different schools as scholarship during the last financial year.

Workshop: An International workshop on dental implantology was held at the Dental College of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences here on Thursday. The workshop was attended by delegates from India and abroad.

Post vacant: Work at the Estate Office of the HUDA here has been suffering as the post of the Estate Officer was lying vacant for the past several days. The last incumbent to the post, Mr Balbir Singh, was transferred to Chandigarh after he was placed under suspension about two weeks ago on a charge of molesting a woman.

Competition result: The Inner Wheel Club organised a debate and essay writing competition on ‘Drug Abuse’ for the students of senior classes at the local Model School on Wednesday. Tanu Aghi, Tanya Jolly and Neema Jain won the first, second and third prizes, respectively, in debate while Chhavi, Sugandha and Ankur Bharadwaj stood first, second and third, respectively in the essay writing competition.

SIRSA
Convicted:
Falal Singh and his parents were sentenced to seven years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 500 each by the District and Sessions Judge, Mr Nirmala Yadav, in connection with the death of Kiran Kaur. According to police sources the accused belonged to Chittha village in Mandi Dabwali subdivision.

Rape charge: The district police has registered a case under Sections 376, 323, 506 and 34 of the IPC against Mahinder of Kotli village for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl. The accused is absconding.

Charas seized:
Tilak Raj, a resident of Panipat, was arrested on Wednesday and seized 1.6 kg of charas from his possession at Balag, near Theog.

SUNDERNAGAR
Forest damaged:
The Forest Department has booked 13 persons under Sections 32 and 33 of Indian Forest Act for causing damage to Derdu, a protected forest. According to Mr Samsher Singh Negi, DFO, persons belonging to Kapahi panchayat had started widening a forest path without obtaining permission from the department.
